This has to be one of the greatest public transit feats of all time. Great video once again, Tim.

Do you mean Subways have to be one of the greatest public transit feats of all time or do you mean the Chicago Subway inparticular? I love Subways, Chicago seems to have a pretty good system, but I don't see why Chicago would be any bigger of a feat then some of the other Subways systems around the world, and there are quite a lot. Subways as great transit...I totally agree. It is a shame the car industry took over in many cities in USA and Canada that caused for a huge slow down or complete stop on expanding many subway systems even further (Chicago hasn't added new track to the system since 1993), only more recently (well in Canada anyways) have in cities like Montreal and Toronto have they started finally planning massive expansion once again as like Chicago they had done hardly any expansion in the passed 20-30 years.

+James C, I actually love this system because of its charm. Its winding between the buildings that tower around it. It's just amazing to me. I too love subways and I believe every system has a personality if you will. Even our system here in Pittsburgh has its own amazing qualities. Thanks for the input, I'm really glad someone else shares my point of view.

James 1 I just discovered the term 'railfan' to describe those of us who love trains but it would seem we 'specialize' in subways! I want to meet as many subway enthusiasts as I can! My friends think it's strange but if you love trains and grew up in a city with subways or trolleys, they become your first rail love! I'm 70 years old, have been riding the NYC transit all my life and still get a thrill out of it! My goal is to see other systems in the US starting with Chicago then DC, Philly, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and every place in between! I used to take street maps of cities that didn't have subways and with a marker, make subways! Lionel has a subway set based on some of the older New York City subway cars; you can check them out on line at Lionel! If I can get my money to cooperate, I'd like to see Chicago this coming spring or summer! Can't wait to see, hear, smell, feel that great city by the lake!

Brody Connor I just finished watching several videos about the subways in Pittsburgh! Although the stock looks more like light rail, the system itself looks more 'subway-ish' if you know what I mean! Never been to Pittsburgh but your city and its urban rail is on my list! I was very impressed with the stations; they look massive and very clean!! I agree with you, every city has its own unique charm as do the 'blood vessels' we call subways! For me, you're not really a true city if you don't have some form of urban rail transit be it heavy rolling stock like Chicago and most Eastern cities or light rail that traverses the urban landscape!

Ahmasi Lloyd It would be absolutely great if you could make it put to Pittsburgh. It is a beautiful city and we are making improvements and expansions to the T Light Rail that will include the airport and nearby communities.

The loop was built over 100 years ago and it was and still is a nice solution for mass transportation for a big crowded downtown, the loop works like a big distributed downtown station, 6 of the 7 Chicago Transit Authority lines pass through the loop. It has been refurbished, it works very well and really a part of Chicago, I couldn't imagine downtown Chicago without it. They would never tear down the loop because it is "old" like London would never tear down Big Ben because its an old clock. If and when ever the USA gets serious about transportation infrastructure Chicago would gladly build more subway lines, needed by all of America's biggest cities. Chicago sits on the south shore of lake Michigan one of the world's biggest fresh water lakes and the water table is quite high, not far below ground. Later after the loop was built starting in the 1940's Chicago built its downtown subway (underground metro) lines the Red line first then the Blue line, they are under the water table, certainly under the Chicago river. They were built about 70 years ago when a then new underground building technique made it economically feasible. Yes Chicago (CTA) has two true subway lines, the CTA's busiest lines and they are the only 24 hour 365 days a year subway lines outside of the North East USA: NYC's MTA and PATH and Philadelphia's PATCO.

Born in Chicago 1952 then moved to California I remember about 10% of what you've filmed here. But it still evokes some deep rooted memories. I need to go back and ride, I've added that to my bucket list. Thanks for posting !

As a New Zealander (Napier) who has never been overseas and who loves the Cubs, this just makes me want to go to Chicago and live there. What an amazing engineering feat this train is. Are they all this clean? If i could just win the lotto...Great video and thanx.

I'm sure that's a much more enjoyable ride than a subway. its even fun for people on the street to see a train above them. New York City replaced their El system with their current subway system. Efficient, quiet, space saving, but boring. Nobody outside sees the underground trains, filled with bored passengers in a dark tunnel. fun fun
@Airjet25829 жыл бұрын
Only Manhattan is underground, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens are elevated.
@waxedtaters9 жыл бұрын
really?
@timosha219 жыл бұрын
+waxedtaters in the other boroughs it is a mix of above ground and underground. In Manhattan there is a small portion of subway that goes above ground - the 1 train is elevated at 125th street and after Dyckman station.
@that90skid729 жыл бұрын
+waxedtaters In general, 60% of the entire system is a subway, with the remaining 40% being either at grade or elevated. As for the rest it's exactly as Tim said.

While both "El" and "L" are used, just the "L" is the more correct. By far the premier resource for the Chicago "L" is www.chicago-l.org/

Carlos Lis te acostumbras, además, ni se escucha adentro de los edificios y casi no pasa por las zonas residenciales excepto por el sur.
