Make no mistake people. Vulnerability, like Tim is displaying, is strength. It isn't easy exposing one's self like that to the public.

Childhood trauma can definitely impact how people view themselves in adulthood and i'm a victim to this but i'm working on my insecurities and starting to believe in myself i also think social media platforms can be very toxic to someones self esteem.

the school system played a big apart of low self esteem , when we got a f or d we were consider a failure because we fail a test so what that does to kids when they get older it fucks with their self esteem , this is one of the reasons why most ppl are afraid to start their own business because they carry a fear of failing ... the way ppl are in this world u have to blame alot of the negative programming on the school

My insecurities quickly turned into self hatred and suicidal ideation and thoughts. It's a slippery slope and the truth is that positive mindset is natural because the love is the only truth. It's the highest calling and you need to love yourself to love others.

My insecurities started at home at a young age with parents that never promoted my self worth or esteem, then those insecurities went to elementary school with me and intensified, then kept snowballing into adulthood. I will never understand how you can be a parent and not make your child seem worthy or deserving.

You're speaking directly to me! I'm 58 and just got mad a couple weeks ago that I've spent my entire life making everyone else happy, (husband, kids, mother, sister, etc). I've always wanted to go to the beach often but husband won't go.... So I don't go. Guess where I'm going next week without my husband? To the f###ing BEACH!!! I don't even feel bad about it either! I would rather go with a partner,, but he can't be what he isn't . Same as me.

This is referred to as the Imposter Syndrome. The feeling like we dont belong; like we are not good enough. Taking action like you mention is one way to beat this self-belief. Society does us no favor either - it agrees with our belief. We have to keep saying that we are good enough, until we are. Thank you for sharing.

I think most of us experience imposter syndrome, and I think to a certain degree it can be healthy (Keeps us in check and humble, not believing our own bs, or our own shtick so to speak.) In a sense, we are all imposters (no one is really who they are portraying themselves to be). And I think that’s a good thing because it removes labels and leaves things open. No one is just one thing. We are all trying to work this thing called life out. No one has anything figured out, we are all just doing the best we can regardless of where we are or what field we are in. To a certain degree.

Today I went for a nature walk to a nearby small lake. I sat down and started watching, it was warm and a lot of people came with their dogs and threw sticks in the water for the dogs to hunt after them into the water and cool off a bit. I myself am a bit unsure when there dogs without a leash around, but I always try to overcome my fears and face the situation head on. I also feel uncomfortable when people come towards me, but I've learned to deal with it and to face my insecurities. If you give in to those fears and hole yourself up inside the confines of your room, where you then create a pseudo safe bubble to feel save, you begin to trade in your freedom and a real experience of how it is to live life fully for that fake feeling of safety and security. In any case, at some point a dog came along and it quickly became apparent that he was probably more afraid of me than I was of him. When his owner started chatting with another dog owner, I was able to watch and listen to their conversation from the place where I was sitting. So I found out that this dog was probably a big scaredy cat and had previously lived on the streets where he probably had some bad traumatic experiences. It was a strong eye opener for me to observe this dog and how he behaved fearfully and timidly to the other dogs that approached him. When a dog got too close to him, he immediately swept back a little and when the other dog got even more energetic, he even ran away a little too. Later, both dogs went into the water, the timid one only about knee-high into the water, the other more boisterous dog then chased the sticks that his owner threw again and again and barked directly after at his owner to immediately throw another one. But what I also noticed was how much more attentive and sensitive this shy dog was, he seemed to perceive a lot more than the other dog, who was totally lost in the game. Those were all characteristics and behaviors of this timid and insecure dog that reminded me of myself. I'm now in my 30s and in recent years I've finally bit by bit startet to overcome more and more of my fears and insecurities that slowed me down a lot expecially in my younger years. But similar to this dog, I seem to have developed more empathy and a certain sensitivity and observational skills trough my inner struggles and the countless fights with myself, which turnt out to be a positive thing in the end. If I hadn't been so introverted and lonely in my childhood years and in my youth, I might have lived more intensively and I might had more fun experiences that way, but if I had that than maybe I wouldn't have developed that deep perceptional skills and I might have had less inner growth and deep insights that came through my frequent self reflections and struggles. And if I wouldn't have struggled so much I wouldn't had gone through the ultimately inevitable stage of overcoming my inner blockages and barriers, which let to more maturity and inner strength. Everything is somehow exactly as it should be. We are all on our paths, we are who we are and we can only change the way we are, if we first accept us completely, our true self is what we should direct our focus to. Not by comparing us and our life's to those of other people, but instead by discovering our true self's in and out. That way we find out what our real strengths and weaknesses are and how we can use them and work with them to our advantage instead of being a slave to them. The owner of this timid dog then said to the other dog owner that she hoped that her dog would also bravely jump into the water some day and that he maybe at some point also would approach other dogs with more self confidence. But at that moment I already knew deep down that this dog would one day outgrow the version of himself that he for now is stock in at this point in time and that he will have great growth in the future. And I myself had also decided at that moment that I will continue working with my weaknesses from know on even more.

Great content, Tim! I know for me as a black man, I have always had my own insecurities. I grew up in a predominantly white town. Went to private school, liberal arts college, and live in Boulder. When I was very young, I got the idea that I was going to be the best little black boy that there ever was. And I took that well into my adulthood. Always comparing yourself to that impossible standard is not only ridiculous, but I held myself back from talking to that person or going for that job. It took a lot of inner work and a lot of self love to change my mindset and realize I have the same worries and fears as everyone else. We can all use an honest dose of perspective from time to time. Comparison is the thief of dreams...

Definitely identify with this. Then woke up one day and realized that essentially, a lot of people are doing the done thing, that thing that somebody decided a long time ago was the right, cool, correct thing to do, Someone long dead. And most of us never really question those things. They may or may not be good, but once I started to ask myself whether I really liked some of the things people believed are the cool things to do, I was stunned to realize that I was running after things that I don't even necessarily enjoy. What a relief when I was able to let go of those things. Does that make me uncool? Yes, but only in terms of someone else's value system; which isn't necessarily valued by me.

Comparing yourself to other people is a shortcut to unhappiness. Most of us know this and yet we still do it. Having said that, the people that we tend to compare ourselves to, we don't really know that well. We do not really know what goes on in their lives. We don't compare ourselves to people that we are well acquainted with since we know that behind the well tended veneer there are some issues . It is really stupidity times ten but we still do it. It oftentimes take a life-threatening situation to literally shake us out of it and to start appreciating our lives.

Quite frankly, I believe my personal struggle to lead a quality life is due to this. I know it's been said that it's never too late, but I can't seem to "get it together". Then, she says, now give your notebook to the person next to you- the room gasped in horror! But we did it. Come to find out, we all have the same 3 shit things we say to ourselves. The meat is the same, it may be worded different but essentially the same. It was a retreat of about 800 people. That changed everything for me!

When I was younger, in high school particularly, I used to think everyone was better than me. I picked up the guitar at age 13, and I used to practice it everyday but because of the limited knowledge and being from a poor family who didn't always have the internet. My practice routines were worthless and without value. I would go to school and see other kids playing guitar better than I and it always made me feel inferior. I saw a kid shredding on the electric guitar; he was leagues beyond me. I was so insecure about my skills and the saddest part was how obsessed I was about music. I decided to make friends with them because I wanted to know how they got so good. A lot of them taught me bits and pieces of their own routines and they even taught me some songs. It took me a year before I saw a difference in my playing. I learned to think differently too. It's crazy how effective it is to just be friends who have a different approach to certain things. But what really helped me overcome my insecurity was the fact that my practice routines weren't all worthless. During that time, I was really into finger picking and I liked to utilize my fingers more than a guitar pick. Though I mostly just play heavy metal guitar and jazz nowadays, I was always into classical style guitars playing a melody and a backing harmony at the same time. I was playing a random song on an acoustic, and the guy who was helping me play electric guitar saw what I was playing and was like "Dude how are you finger picking that fast? You have to teach me that!" and it made me feel so good, knowing that what I knew wasn't exactly worthless. Sometimes, all it takes is a different perspective to understand just how equal we all are.

While every country has different issues, when I was teaching online children in China, the one thing I found interesting is that in the lessons, it was taught that each person was of value from the janitor to the doctor, and each person has a valuable role in society. It was interesting how suddenly our values changed when we honored front line workers, an how quickly we forgot them. I am not saying China is better than America, but this might be one lesson that everyone can benefit from. It was a beautiful idea, and would have been so powerful to hear at a younger age. It would be so empowering if we encouraged young people to go after their own path and form a healthy mindset. I hope everyone who has listened to this video feels more empowered to take charge of their self worth and knows that you have nothing to prove to world. It isn’t always easy because there is so much negative input, but you are worthy and valuable no matter who has said differently.

i think i was blessed because while i did fall into all the traps of living in todays world, i was always a loner. i never felt the need to fit in. i realized at a very young age that i didnt like all the things everyone else was doing. i have always been the kind of guy that walks into a room and sees a bunch of busy people that have nothing to do with me and when i did fall in to the trap of comparing myself to them and measuring myself in the ways they measured success, it always made me depressed, but when i said F everyone and everything and did my own thing, i was always so much happier. the only big thing for me is that i have never found consistent love. and while some people think that is ok, i actually would like to have some kids some day. you once talked about that if god intended the american dream to be a part of your life he would have programmed that into your DNA well, kids "are" programmed into our DNA and so is love. no matter what version of life you choose, the fact is that you are meant to have a family. god intended us all to have one. in fact he gave each one of us half of a puzzle piece that when put together, create them for free.

I just turned 30 and The Lord has truly opened my eyes to these things you are saying that I do belong to his family and in the world and that I have a purpose. Kids and all we have a purpose and will from the Lord. I kept feeling that I was wasting time not doing what I desired to do more so because of low self esteem, no support, and feeling it will be too hard for me. I felt like a tiny person in a huge world too big for me. Now I have decided to get a liscense at 30 years old. Lol I was afraid to drive because of accidents where I wasnt even the driver 😩 Took me some years to get past the fear of the wide open roads. Also the financial responsiblity of a car and insurance payments monthly. I had to grow a bit for that type of responsibilty on top of home rent, electric and water bill. I do have a partner but we are not a couple but help eachother with living expenses because we have kids. It makes it easier to do other things like going out of town and buying clothes and shoes. We have a van that his grandmother helped us pay off. In my early 20's I didnt have all this help and favor. Like you said everything was a surprise when now its a regular thing in our life. We can find support somewhere. Our city recieved some govt funding and we applied and they sent our landlord a 3800 dollar check so our rent was paid for about 3 months and covered our water bill and a maintence fee. Jesus is life. Truly and sincerely. I had a hard life and was in foster care. God spoke to me and told me He is my father. Jesus IS that tree of life. He IS the Universe. So glad I found your video. Im glad Im not alone in this big world. 🙏 God bless you and keep you safe at all times. Amen.

I have no idea who you are, a friend of mine just randomly showed me this video, but yet this is the only video I felt the need to actually like and comment. Thank you for your kind and wise words, I go through alot of the same myself and its a welcome change to hear someone put it into words. I really needed to hear this video, and I plan on listening to it again and again. Thank you

I love doing volunteer work and carry on doing so, even though lots of people say 'it's not a proper job, just because you aren't earning money. LIfe is 'Oh what to do you do? And they don't expect you do volunteer work as your main purpose... it is not good enough in capitalist society. Recruitment companies are always badgering you to get a proper paid job, even if you hate it and it is bad for mental wellbeing 'uk

More people value status and ownership of "things" as the most important things in their lives. So they constantly strive at work to get promotions so they can then buy more stuff which further traps them in a never ending cycle. They took their childhood mind and took it with them to their adult stage: comparison, competition and other old mindsets. I applaud people who are willing to step outside of the "norm" and see life as much more then working and buying.

It makes it even harder to get out of that mindset when you feel like your family looks down on you. It's like I'm always trying to win their approval. I haven't even talked to my dad in years because I feel like there's no point unless I can impress him. He sees my step sister as the superior daughter, it's like I was the defective daughter and she's the one he really wanted. It's so extremely hurtful when the people who should be lifting you up make you feel unworthy. I have been trying to pull myself up out of the pit of insecurity. One thing I've found that helps me is preparedness. If I'm about to do anything that I haven't done before and I'm insecure about it, I'll research it and learn about it. There are things that I never thought I could do before, until I opened up a book or watched a tutorial and educated myself. I learned that you don't really need to go to school to be educated. There's a whole world of knowledge out there that's readily available to you. You just have to go get it.

Yet another marvellous video Tim! I admire you, for taking the time to share these experiences of yours, in order to offer your wisdom and support to so many around the world. I think someone else said about how what you do is a big thing, being vulnerable and telling your stories and experiences... Hats off to you, as it's not an easy thing to do. When you mentioned the thoughts we hold in our minds being a self-fulfilling prophecy, when we keep telling ourselves that we aren't good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, rich enough and more... That hit home a lot. I realise that I've been telling myself a lot of negative things, which has ended up in me missing out on potential opportunities that could have been something. If I'd have told myself more such things as "I am good enough and I am successful, maybe I wouldn't have developed quite the negative script I have done. I'm trying to change that, but it's a tough one when you've been telling yourself over and over and over all the negative things. Often I've looked at other people and believed they were better than me, smarter than me, more successful than me, richer than me. I became so caught up in the need to be like other people in society, to do as they do that it brought nothing but dissatisfaction and a great unhappiness. You hit the nail on the head when you said the word "sabotage." It's a self-sabotaging prophecy and it is, as you say, setting one's own self up to failure. I never really thought about it before but, as you say, whilst we might be thinking about how successful someone is and feeling a sense of jealousy and insecurity, they may well be thinking the exact same with regards to us! Having that positive mindset is so very important, telling ourselves that things will be alright and that they'll work out. Reminding ourselves that we are worthy and successful because we're on our own path. We must let people be who they are and accept that fact, so that we can focus on our own mindset and journey. We can do this, we can do the things we want to do regardless of what others may think or say or believe. I think if we can somehow let go of this need to be like others, that others are better than ourselves and that we'll never succeed, we can accomplish great things. Keep shining your light on us all Tim, you're the man! ✊🏻

Hi Tim, great message. I'm sure a lot of people can benefit from this video. I remember in my twenties feeling insecure low self-esteem low self-worth but it all changed when I moved away from my hometown with my two small children alone I started a journey of self-discovery and self-love and when I look back to my twenty-year-old self I don't recognize that person. What I've discovered is true confidence comes from the inside.

Very good points on overcoming insecurity and how it is basically a self fufilling propechy in your head, despite past traumas (some of which require therapy to work through). Have also heard other life coaches say this as well. "I got myself into this situation and I can get myself out of it." I also like lifting yourself up into a positvity spiral. A lot of neurologists back this up by turning our default negativity bias into a posivity bias by having gratitude and acceuntating on the positives of life.
