I agree. I am NOT a professional drummer, but to my ears, the Evans just sounded best overall. The Remos were OK, but I still think the Evans' drumheads sounded the best. But the Aquarians were absolutely horrendous--they didn't even sound like they were properly tuned. To me, they're a waste of money if you're looking for drum heads.

Yes Evans have less depth and sound flat compared to Remo. Rub your hand across a clean smooth glass....thats Evans to my ear. Now rub your hand over a sheet of 300 grit sandpaper......thats Remo. It is you and couple other people who are able to say that one company has different sound than the other one, while in real world there are huge differences between the heads of one company. There are more dampened one, some with more attack, some with loads of overtones, you name it. @@VojtechRozsival I have around 20 brand new Evans GI coated and 20 brand new Evans reso 300 replaced by Remo. While you might not be able to hear the difference in person myself and millions of other drummers can perceive the difference that Remo heads possess. There are a few exceptions where I don't feel there's enough difference so that right there says I'm STILL being objective while still preferring Remo over Evans on most snare drums. I used Remo Ambassadors for many years and switched to Aquarians. I can´t confirm this huge differences but the coating of the Aquarian is much more durable. In my opinion, these two heads have absolutely different tunings in this video - in terms of sound, not tension. If my snare would sould like in this video, I´d simply go for a higher tuning. On the other hand, I recognized a kind of typical sound of some Evans heads. So, in every case, my appreciation for your hard work!

I'm a bit shocked, but I have to give the gold to the Aquarian Texture Coated. Thank you for your hard work! I only wish a few things were different... - The you had used a more standard snare like a Black Beauty - That you had used the same kick drum the whole time - That you had used the same room and rug the whole time - That you had used a metronome and played the same tempo the whole time
@Timpanopercussion5 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you for your constructive criticism! We hear you but we just want to clarify a few things :) - The snare choice is subjective and we thought the 14X6 (right between 5.5 and 6.5) Yamaha Maple snare would be somehow considered as "standard". But we get it for your choice of a Black Beauty ;) - This video is a mashup of our 3 ULTIMATE snare comparison videos (each made specifically for a certain brand) and almost 2 years and a half have passed by the time we did the first (Remo) and last (Aquarian) comparison. We've sold many kits during this period including those that were used in the videos so we had to change kick drums obviously! - It is the same room! For the rug, we didn't really pay attention. - As previously stated this is a mashup and we never thought that it would be leading to this compilation! We did replicate the same beat but it's only when we've edited THIS video that we realized the tempo was slightly varying from a comparison to another. Anyhow we're glad it helped you make a choice! Keep groovin' :)

one of the most useful videos on KZbin, you can get an idea of the sound of the drumhead without having to buy it, thanks!
The best head comparison video, period... That's one sick groove right there!

When it comes down to it, it’s all personal preference. But in my opinion from listening, the Evans heads, no matter the thickness, all sounded very much alike and high pitched? Aquarian seemed like hit or miss? Meaning some sounded really good and others, I wouldn’t use even if someone gave them to me! Remo, everyone of them in this video, sounded great!
@CameronBartholomew5 жыл бұрын
Evans are naturally higher pitched and brighter than Remo... at the same Drum Dial tension. But if you tuned them all to the same pitch with a Tune-Bot, all of a sudden it's a different ball game... and the Evans start to sound more open and full, while the Remos start to sound choked.

Timpano Percussion coming in clutch with the video that every drummer needs to see. Like for real, I’m gonna send all of my students to this video. This was legit one of the most helpful videos I’ve ever watched on here. I know A LOT of set up, time, and editing went into this. Thank you for this video.

My 4 favorite snare drum heads are a Remo Vintage Emperor, an Evans UV2, a Remo Coated Emperor and an Evans Heavyweight. In general, Remo Drumheads and Evans Drumheads are my two favorite drumhead brands.

Dont mind me, just putting some time stamps to compare between my options: 00:42 - Evans 56 01:33 - Remo Ambassador suede 05:04 - Evans HD Dry 06:28 - Evans Hydraulic Red 07:27 - Evans Onyx But if you want to give me a review of any of those, I would be grateful

I think overall Evans has a dryer sound whereas Remo is a little more resonant. Guess it all depends on the sound you’re going for.

The Evans heads just don't really have any tonal quality to them. I was actually impressed by some of the Aquarian heads. I remember trying some of their heads back in the day and not really liking them. A few really stood out to me here though.

Couldn’t go wrong choosing evans drumheads. Hmm I feel like switching to Evans heads.. more focused and no tone loss.

I agree with you, I think the EVANS skins have a smoother tone than the rest, that's what I'm going for when I get new skins this week.

Aquarian is weird cause half the heads sound great and really unique and the other half just sound cheap. One head by them not listed here is the Hi-Velocity Onyx Coated head. I use that on my snare and it’s really awesome sounds great

The Evans EC Reverse Dot heads are fuckin iconic. I'll never use a different snare head
To me it's like this: Pinstripe > Powerstroke > Controlled Sound > Ambassador > Emperor even if the last models have catchier names, Pinstripe have the perfect balance between punch and sustain!!!

Yes, a great comparison video. Many great sounding heads. The variety we have to choose now a days is really mind-blowing. Back in the early 60's when I started out playing, not as many options obviously. I've been using the UV1's from Evans since first were introduced. Just recently pick-ed up a UV2 for some thicker depth snare drums I have, loved them. The UV series so far holds up for a long time before needing replaced. Take care of your equipment, be safe, and all good things fellow drummers!!!

After 40 years and nearly every drum head, nothing frees up the full sound of a snare like a Remo coated Ambassador.

That's what I thought for 30 years, but I'm testing out some 2 and 3 ply heads at the moment because I'm sick of the ping and ring from ambassadors, but I'm morally against moon gels and gaffer tape haha
