The Vicar at 1:06:21 came out of nowhere, I wonder if he is going to write a series of stories about talking trains with faces, Grumpy diesel would make a great character, I wonder how he would present Grumpy diesel in its alternative guise as Bardotka (so called because drivers compared its front profile to the legendary Brigitte Bardot)

amazing how the line is open and not fenced off from the public....a nice open ride with views of the countryside and houses...

Most railways in mainland Europe are not fenced in, even overhead electric railways with train running at up to 100 Kilometres Per Hour. An added bonus is that there is no rubbish strewn no mans land between the tracks and surrounding farm land.

Hi Tim, thank you very much for another beautiful video. That was some courage from organizers to send a train on that track: The Zbehy - Radošina line was put into operation on 11 November 1909. In 2003, the passenger transport on the Zbehy-Radošina line was stopped. All the best, Ron

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the ride. The line was very overgrown, by the time we arrived at Radošina the carriage floors were covered in leaves from the branches flicking into the open windows of the carriages, the grill protecting the locomotive horn also had a tree branch lodged in it. The surface of the rails indicated it had been several years since a train had traversed the line. Tim.

Hello John, the stations on the branch line after Zbehy have been out of use for many years, although most of the old stationmasters houses were still occupied.

Hi, all is not lost. I was able to charge one of my GoPro's and empty a memory card to my laptop during the ride, enabling me capture the return leg along the branch from the driving cab. The video should be available by the weekend.

@@Timsvideochannel1 *dances* Perfect! (Memories return of ElfQuest and of "Pike" lying underneath a "dreamberry bush" half asleep due to the intoxicating effect of the berries. He's been "testing if the berries are ripe enough" and comments: "Hic... Perfec.") ;)

@@melkiorwiseman5234 Wow, I didn't know about Elfquest or Pike, I must be reading the wrong books ... Google to the rescue - www.pinterest.co.uk/liza_mclellan/pike/ Now I know a little more - Pike was drunk on the fruits of the dreamberry bush, reminds me of Marula fruit: African booze for wild animals. I'm not sure a cab ride video will ever be as mind blowing as dreamberry fruit, but never the less, an interesting comparison.

Good evening Tim! I've just had time to watch the video. Very nice again. In the Czech Republic or Slovakia you can already speak a few words with the locomotive driver while driving. They do not take that too seriously. I really like my country neighbors. Are all very honest people. Many try to speak good German with us. Very many also speak a great good English. You can ask everyone in the Eastern bloc. A solution is found. Greetings Hans from the Mühlviertel. Let me hear something from you again. Anything else, in 10 days I'm 60 years old. Then I have a right to go with a stick. Ha Ha.👍

Hello Hans, I wish I could be 60 years young again, although I am lucky in that I'm still reasonably fit and active. The people we met in Slovakia were all friendly and helpful, especially the train crew, they were enjoying the tour as much as the tour participants. Language was a problem at times, fortunately one of the volunteer crew was an English teacher in a Slovakian school, she acted as an interpreter from time to time. British health and safety rules would have made a tour like this impossible in the UK. Being sixty is not so bad, I hope you have an enjoyable day marking the big six O. Take care. Tim.

@@Timsvideochannel1 I'll look forward to seeing your new work. I've got to get away to the Sydney Tramway Museum at some point in the next couple of months. I'm keen to see how much progress has been made in getting the tram track to the Sutherland terminus ready for use. It's been over a year since my last visit. I've also got to get up to the Richmond Vale Railway Museum as well as another trip to Paterson. The Richmond Vale and Paterson visits will give me a chance to try out my "tripod shoes". These are three cardboard boxes(formerly holding light-bulbs) that have been stuffed with foam rubber and a cap from a tin of Saline powder(lemon flavoured) and sealed with plastic adhesive tape. Their purpose is to cushion the tripod and camera from vibrations in the floor of a train's carriage.

@@neilforbes416 Hi Neil, I look forward to seeing the videos showing your up and coming visits, along with the results from your tripod modifications.
@neilforbes416
@neilforbes416 5 жыл бұрын
@@Timsvideochannel1 The tripod itself isn't modified. These "tripod shoes" could be used with any tripod. You place them on the floor(of the train's carriage) and set each foot of the tripod into them, the foam rubber then absorbs the shakiness of the carriage as it runs along rough tracks. I hope to get a chance to try them with a tram ride at the Tramway Museum and the Richmond Vale Railway museum where the tracks are particularly rough.

Tim, I always enjoy your trips with the Grumpy Diesel. I've noticed that they are still recovering from the breakup of the former Soviet Union. The stations, locomotives and rolling stock look like something out of the '70s and, in most cases, a little "tired" -- in need of a coat of paint at the very least. I also noticed a lot of the track-side signals are dark. Thanks for another wonderful and interesting video. Dave in California
@Timsvideochannel1

Hi Dave, Slovakia hasn't suffered from the accounted led mass closure of its railways as has happened in many country's, although money for modernization is in short supply, leaving the secondary and branch lines suspended in time, giving some idea of how similar British lines must have looked before the infamous Dr Beeching recommended closing them all. The signals were a bit of a mystery, in the first part of the video I think many were working, for some reason the camera showed them as dark. On the branch line to Radošina there was no reason for signalling as the line was not in regular use.
@randomuser262
@randomuser262 5 жыл бұрын
Only 10% of people travel by train. These lines aren't part of TEN-T network where money for modernization are spent.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 5 жыл бұрын
@@randomuser262 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-European_Transport_Network I've seen some of the results from this directive, it is clear from the Motorway and Rail improvements in Bulgaria and Greece that Turkey was to become a member of the EU. Switzerland is almost at the center of the network, yet it is not a member of the EU. Britain was always peripheral, only the channel tunnel and the route to Holyhead for Ireland featured along with the East and West Coast lines to a lesser extent. It is not working very well because the motorways across the Alps are very busy whilst railways have lost most of their freight to the roads, only Switzerland really bucks the trend. So as long as lorry's are not required to cover the cost of the damage they cause to roads and the environment, railways will suffer. I have seen huge sums spent on cross border railways that carry no traffic, whilst the parallel motorway is wrecking the air quality. The EU is full of good ideas that falter when the various special interest groups get involved. The road freight lobby always wins, easy profit is king. Secondary railways such as those featured in this video rely on local freight along with funding from central and local government. There are no freight or passenger services on this line, I'm not sure how it survives, but I'm glad it does. The Frejus Pass between Bardonecchia in Italy to Modane in France is a classic mistake. The railway used to carry a huge tonnage of freight until the motorway opened, now is carries very little whilst the busy motorway has trashed the air quality in this beautiful mountain pass. Integrated transport works on paper, in practice all the time the road lobby is not reigned in, TEN-T will not work. The EU should be aiming for all long distance freight to go by rail, not 10%.
