Great Vid Tim about to start this right now in my vineyard .👍

Thanks Tim! Couple of questions if I may: 1) Are the vine guards there to stay till the vine matures (2-3 years time)? 2) If they are removed periodically, what's the frequency and condition(s)? 3) Do they help with frost protection? 4) Do you spray any fungicide prior to deployment of the vine guards? I'd assume the humid conditions that they foster will lead to mildew and sorts

Extremely helpful and informative video. I like how you explain the "why" behind what you are doing. Thanks for posting and added a sub!

Great to know. That is what I do to my tomatoes. But I didn't really know what to do with grapes until they had matured despite having pruned thousands of them. I've just had a strip dug for a dozen grape plants, will have fun building the trellis when I have time away from fencing.

You make a lot of sense with the tip about growing the vines mate you need string legs to stand up

Like the video. Great and thanks. I don’t do anything without checking you first. Is there another with guidance on second year to prune/prepare laying down cordons.

I’ll get to that early winter mate

I love your videos, i don't want to be nit-picky but your first not is a cow hitch, not a clove hitch witch might have been better.

Hope the cold isnt too bad over there. My black spanish are under mulch. Anyway I'm wondering if you could do a single cordon thats 8 feet long in one direction instead of two 4 foot arms in opposite directions?
@FarmLearningTim8 ай бұрын
The longer the cordon, the more likely that you will experience apical dominance from Auxin production in the shoot tips. This results in poor bud burst in the centre of the cordon and overly vegative end and crown canes (bull canes). This can be overcome to a small extent with arching the canes over two fruiting wires. Some varieties will let you get away with this but many won’t. You can also end up with curved and collapsing trunks over time due to uneven loading. Try a row and see what happens in your soil.

Really great video Tim - thanks. Wondering about when to spray the vines and with what. Do you plan to produce a video along those lines?

Yep. It’s coming in the next month or so

Sorry Tim, That knot was actually a larks foot not a clove hitch, the top knot anyway, the rest are all good

So eventually do you only have one horizontal cordon on one side of each vine or do you have two, one either side.
@FarmLearningTim8 ай бұрын
One on either side.

@@FarmLearningTim Thanks caught up on your vid from 4 mths ago where you answered some Q's. Ive posted a question on that one too. Cheers from Central Plateau NZ
@JohnSmith-fp8il2 жыл бұрын
Will the laterals regrow after being pinched out? If not does that not then create a problem in that you won't have any laterals to grow out along the wires?
@FarmLearningTim2 жыл бұрын
The basal buds (which remain behind) grow into shoots the following year. Cheers!
