I missed the premiere 😫😫😫 I was a Violet for too long. I also almost died! Ren's music, these Tales specifically, helped me get away from being Violet as I staggered out of my grave and said "Not like this. Never like this." It's a long road to recovery, but I'm on it. Thanks for the love, Tim. The reactions to the Tales have given me a lot of tools for healing, including the knowledge that it is never, ever, ever the abuse victim's fault for being abused, no matter what their abusers say Also, I saw you catch the off chance laugh in the background. I’ve watched countless reactions to the Tales at this point and one thing I don’t remember anyone calling out is the change in accent or articulation he uses. An example would be at the beginning of Violet’s Tale with “London ci-iy, far from pri-iy,” where the Ts are a glottal stop instead, which is indicative of a London accent. That opening seems to be from her perspective with his eyes scanning the room in confusion. After the wind forward, the Ts in “London city, far from pretty” are articulated because that moment of perspective is coming from the doctor whose elocution would be different from a girl growing up in a council estate.

Great reaction as always Tim - what a piece this is! Totally agree that it's so notable that Ren, someone who lyrically has the ability to say so much, also uses silence (and stillness) so effectively. This is particularly evident in Violet's Tale, with the way he lets the "I'm sure her mother knew" line hang with any music for a beat; how he stops walking and allows the camera to move away from him on the "you see Violet, she was pregnant" line and, my personal favourite, Ren moving from stumbling to regaining his balance right on the line " the doctor soon regained composure" - genius! While we are swept away by Ren's guitar skills, his acting ability and his storytelling, it's easy to forget the each part of the trilogy is a one-take. Who else can do all of this?
@kellyt534121 күн бұрын
Nobody....how about in VT...he is playing a detailed part on the guitar, he is rapping, speaking poetry and singing while walking AND is looking at the camera as he is coming to a stop. His body is working on muscle memory, his guitar playing is using muscle memory on another section of the brain and then he is rapping/singing his words and concentrating on them because he needs to act the part and bring the specific emotion to that section. WoW.....he is a musical genius.
@darkmatter671421 күн бұрын
He packs so much story in, you can fill several pages with it, then blows your mind with the very last line!
@odiesml21 күн бұрын
I caught something on this listen at the very end where Violet is pleading with the doctor: "Please let my babies stay alive." The s at the start of "stay" disguises the fact that babies is plural and protects the dramatic reveal in the last line. Ren is a genius!
@rebeccaburnell931920 күн бұрын
My preferred interpretation is that Violet DID say "let my baby stay alive" - that's how Ren writes it in the lyrics - because she hadn't had any prenatal care due to the violence in her relationship with Stevie, so she had no idea she was carrying twins. However, it does work so well either way!
@obsidianred983320 күн бұрын
I've always heard it as baby, I took it as an indication that Violet couldn't go for prenatal care. Just another part of this horrible cycle.

I grew up by the ocean there’s no mistaking the calls of hungry sea gulls. The timing of their calls was perfect during the brief pause. I’m glad they just left them in. The sounds anchor the story to life in the present. There must be a pier nearby and a fishing boat or ferry came in, or there’s a processing plant and the gulls got lucky. I love Ren’s live videos. They’re just a whole other level of brilliant.

The way I see the cell phone scene.... we have to remember that Screech is 14, just killed someone, and is looking for safety. He's freaking out. Ren does have a back story that alludes to the idea that his first buddy is hooking up with his girl, but to me it shows the REALNESS of the chaos trying to find way out of what he just did.
I totally agree. I know the lore about Patrick & the girlfriend but, more than that, I see a scared & panicking kid in that moment. That's not to excuse what he did but I really don't think there was much forethought or planning or consideration of the consequences.

A couple of points in 'Violets Tale', when Ren is singing hauntingly (in the bed), looking around as if confused, he is portraying Violet waking up in the hospital confused; also, many reactors miss that at the foot of Violets bed is a sign that says, Violet, Bed 3. Also, at the end of Screeches Tale, Ren sings, "our story it (ends) right at the (start), 2 bodies lying one street apart" is an Easter Egg, relating to Violet giving birth to twins, "two twins, aligned side by side"; they were born on the same day, lying side by side (beginning), and died on the same day, lying one street apart (end).
@Lloocii20 күн бұрын
To your last point, it's an interesting use of bookends in Screech's Tale. "Our story it ends, right at the start." At the start flipping convention and then ending the tale with, "Our story it ends, right at the start." Flipping conventional ordering and mirror flipping the start like he did in the beginning. Another tidbit that is interesting. In Violet's Tale, the audio manipulation of Ren's acoustics mirrors Violet's situations. When she's trapped within the cycles of abuse, the camera is close, and the audio acoustics are closed in. As she "escapes" the cycle moving out at 16, we've moved out spatially introducing more acoustic reverb. And then back in close again as the abuse starts again. Intentional? Idk, but knowing Ren and Samuel's body of work, I'd say it must be.

The Swedish translation of the play is called Tolvshillingsoperan (12 shilling opera). I did the role of Mrs. Peachum many years ago 😊 Fun but challenging with Kurt Weill. I also associate Jenny, with that character in the play, although I remember her as quite tough. James/Screech might have belonged to Macheath's gang, if his character had been in the play 🙂 I experience Ren's work as a mix of the Twelve Shillings Opera and Alan-A-Dale telling stories with his lute in Robin Hood 😊

Great reaction Tim - just a little surprised that you didn't highlight Ren's use of different acoustic environments in Violet's Tale. I always find it interesting/amusing that even the most pedantic of breakdown reactors shift through the Trilogy (and Hi Ren) from starting off with purely technical reactions to invariably ending on purely visceral/emotional ones - this, to my mind, is the highest compliment to Ren's art, that his message invariably transcends the medium he employs to share it, even though (in fact, because) that technique is exemplary.

And then, three years later, Violet's Tale was released in 2022. So it was not a pre-planned trilogy, but a story that evolved over seven years.

I’m so glad that you picked up on the similarities to the 3-penny Opera. I thought of it as soon as I 1st heard these & commented but no one else picked it up. I love his use of instrumental “mini-overtures” to introduce each Act & how the instrumentation fore-shadows & mirrors the lyrics & subject of each piece. I’m totally amazed by his compositional ability. His use of rhythm, tempo, harmony & lyrics to word-paint is brilliant (not to mention his use of the acoustics in his vicinity). It’s so impressive. I do agree with your other subscriber though. REN isn’t a Bardcore musician. Bardcore’s a genre of music where they use medieval/ancient/traditional instruments that have largely fallen out of use & sing in dead languages such as old Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Latin etc. They often take contemporary songs & make covers of them, although they also write & perform their own music too. Examples of a few Bardcore musicians are, Hildegard von Blingin, Algal the Bard, the Miracle Alinger & Beedle the Bard. You should check out some of that genre & the difference between REN & Bardcore is quite obvious. I think REN’s forming his own unique multi-genre category of music. I’m so captivated by his music & his ability to seemingly tackle any genre. He’s immensely talented. Thank you for your reaction I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts.

This - but I don't think we're gonna be able to get people to stop labeling Ren bardcore, as much as it irks me that the term is being used.

Yes, love the overtures with his guitar playing at the beginning of each parts of the trilogy.

@ Yep, that’s the issue with labels I guess. I’d much rather folks in general focus less on labels & just concentrate on the wonderfully diverse music. At the end of the day it’s really not important, or necessary, that he fits into a particular “label/ box”. I think the fact that he doesn’t conform to any one easily definable contemporary genre makes his music far more intriguing & demonstrates his talent & diversity. xx

There are melodies in these pieces that sound medieaval, and Ren is very much playing the part of a modern day bard in the Tales, so I can see why it could be called bardcore, even if other examples of the genre are different. Words are our servants, not our masters (a piece of sense I picked up from Richard Dawkins’ writing). I also got the impression that part of Ren being described as bardcore comes from him also being likened so often to Shakespeare - ‘The Bard’.
@annegreen94998 күн бұрын
@@hollyspeckle I agree with you, especially in this instance when he's performing The Tales. I was commenting on Bardcore Artists because Tim has mentioned it a couple of times & I thought he might find artists in that genre interesting & because other subscribers had brought it up previously but hadn't given him any examples to clarify what they'd meant. I agree too that labels aren't always helpful & can lead to unwanted limitations. I think REN's music crosses & combines so many genres that it's a huge breath of fresh air (& incredible talent). It's wonderful to see an independent musician who doesn't "fit conventional industry labels" successfully exercising their creativity & bringing such diverse, well crafted compositions to a wider audience. I first heard REN when he and Sam released Blind-eyed and it's so fantastic to watch him receive more recognition. I hope that more people find his music & he's able to continue to follow his passions.

It is hard to process, even after a year of watching. I cry most for Violet. Thanks for doing this, it was great to hear your thoughts on the whole thing, but appreciate your commitment 😊 One thing though, ive heard this come up before. Pretty sure I walk the road to my house 1K times a year, and I wear heels , def not a 'lady of the night' though. Just don't see it as a logical conclusion. Maybe a car based society is different 😂 . Anyway thoroughly enjoyed this Tim an Ren are always good company, thanks 😊🎉xx

These are dark tales but oh so needed in order to shine light on the shadowy subject matter. I love how Ren is giving voices to Jenny and Violet. Neither of them speak during the horrific events they both endured during their tale (though Violet does plead for the doctor to save her baby). Too often victims of such dark acts are silent (Violet), or silenced by those that commit the acts, or silenced by wrongly self-inflicted guilt, shame or fear, or silenced by societal stigmas, or actually die in silence (Jenny and Violet afterwards). Ren is allowing them to be heard and giving a voice to Jenny and Violet and all those that suffer through real-world trauma and have lived through unimaginable darkness. They deserve to be heard and their voices matter. Wonderful breakdown, analysis and reaction to Ren’s dark, yet beautiful, masterpiece of a trilogy. It’s amazing to see how Ren’s work has inspired you and so many others, and how you’re likewise providing inspiration to those around you. Brilliant job 👏🏻 ❤️🍺

Yes. Incredible Theatre Pieces. Street Theatre, Songwriting, Master Lyricist,Rapping ( kind of even slam poetry in patches!) Acting, Narration... Producer/ Director, Location, Audo-Design + Post-Production. Ren wears so many hats at once and switches between them & characters so fast it's simply breathtaking. # I'm no expert on Bardcore, developed very recently in the UK - & probably there are various forms - but from my shallow dive into it most Artists are resurrecting old Medieval tunes, musical styles, using older instruments of the time. Some even dressing up for performances in period costume. # Whereas, REN is a polyglot creative sponge! He synthesises all types of styles / genres, then moulded to enhance his story telling within an Intro & Outro Bard/ Minstrels Structure, all his own. I guess we could call it RENCORE! 🎉 # AND beautifully tailored to today's Multi-media tastes / consumption. When you look at this Trilogy in its entirely the words; Innovative and Masterpiece seem barely sufficient! YES, His love of Reggae comes out in the cadence / flow - even accent in the Narrrator role, while being delivered in the style of a Medieval Town Crier. Which, if not so brilliantly done and seamless, would be kinda hilarious! ( I doubt there were very many Jamaican Minstrels or Town Criers around back in Medieval England! ) 😂😂😂 # Screech BTW, is frantically on the run, after knifing Jenny. He's desperate to get off the streets and into hiding. Patrick isn't home and the ex-girlfriend doesn't want anything to do with him. We can see why! So, here is this 14 y/o boy, pumped up with adrenaline & high, - already habitually puffed up and defensively aggro- to survive out on the streets - suddenly confronted by a police officer. Feeling cornered he immediately attacks. While the policeman, who has no clue why this boy is suddenly running at him with a knife ( Jenny hasn't even been found yet? ) has to act. So... To Content. # We all now recognise that Ren is not only a Mega-talented creative artist but also a Powerful Social Commentator. He shines a riveting spotlight on the social ills that we prefer to look away / click away from. He said he heard the news about a young prostitute killed by a street kid and was saddened & disgusted by how quickly this story faded away from public consciousness- out of the relentless shuffle of the 24/ 7 News Cycle. He was conscious that if these had been the children of 'prominent citizens' the coverage would have been FAR greater. He was saddened abd angry too. Ren cares. He wants his audience to care also. He brings us right into frame - to stand as Witnesses! NOT to murmur vague platitudes like; "Oh what a shame..." and then turn away. He says; "No! Look HERE! These lives MATTER! We KNOW how innocents like Jenny, Screech & Violet get set onto pathways that lead them to becoming victims / perpetrators, so WHY aren't we doing more to stop these tragedies?!" You are correct Tim. Ren is a Change Agent.

Thank you Tim, one of the best artfully balanced and heartfelt reactions to this trilogy I have viewed for sometime. Ren's performance is outstanding and, often because of how this draws us in, the absolute genius of Sam Perry-Falvey, Ren's long time friend and videographer, is sometimes overlooked. Sam's brilliant work on focus, e.g. closeup on Ren's eyes at 'pinches the eyelids and folds them up' is just amazing camera work - particularly as these pieces are each a live one-take whilst on the move through alleys and a building. Also many miss the wee easter egg - the hospital bed Ren is on in the opening scene of Violets Tale: 'Bd 3 Violet', plus the 'guitar wind time forward again' at the transition after the beating scene. One of the top reactions for this one. Kudos. Kia kaha from NZ

Its a whole new new genre of entertainment. A whole musical using the intimacy of our small screens. I just hope that it is lucrative enough for Ren to continue making this incredible art and that Rens health allows him to do this, as and when. Thanks Tim, I always learn something from your reactions.

Your breakdowns are always so good. ❤❤❤❤❤ Ren made an Instagram promo video for this that's interesting to watch which seems to suggest that there is something going on between Screech's girlfriend and Patrick. He says in the comments section that that little video got him into trouble with some of his fans. The girlfriend and Patrick also show up in the video for the Big Push's Why My Woman

Whenever I watch this I can't help but notice how the narrator throughout all the tales is pretty steady and calm but at the end of Violet's Tale he's like stumbling around and seeming unsteady like even he's affected strongly by this.

Great reaction Tim!! Alas poor Jenny, Screech and Violet we knew them well. Very much Bardcore. A modern tragedy that hits hard. With little money Ren and Sam made this awesome tales. The neighbours shouted 😄😁 It nearly backfired as Ren did a build up where Screech stole his phone and uploaded videos. People unsubscribed and friends blocked Ren 😄 KZbin even threatened to stop Rens channel at the time. Screech wasn't a nice person. He treated his girlfriend badly and Patrick, his friend fancied the girlfriend. So when Screech called, Patrick was at the girlfriends pad.

I love that you listen to each part in full before going back to deep dive/react / it allows you to get the full experience of how the story breaks down. Too many reactors stop every 15 seconds on their first listen which I think means that they miss a big part of the beauty of the story telling. It was clearly designed to be listened to as a continuous flowing story. Keep up the good work! Money game trilogy soon??
