I just recently bought an nrsvue with apocrypha - I have been reading it out loud at night to the kids, so far it has been very enjoyable - I am excited to hear your views on the apocrypha!

I am becoming a big fan of the NRSVUE to sit and read and meditate on the text. It forces me to break out of the complacency of memory of KJV and NKJV of my youth. Also, congrats reading through the Apocrypha, it helped me shaped some elements of my faith and relationship with Gospel when I studied it in college as part of Wisdom Literature.

Happy to see some more NRSVUE options becoming available. Have been using this transition for bible study reading for almost two years, and hoping that a good study Bible will be released in the next year or two. In the meantime I have a New Oxford Annotated NRSV I use when I want more in depth study notes.

Great review of a great translation! Cambridge does excellent work. I’m tempted to order this, but I’m holding out for the NRSVUE Westminster Study Bible by John Knox coming out in October 2024.

I really must disagree that the NRSVue is a great translation. The whole process of revisions of ASV > RSV > NRSV > NRSVue is the record of a failure to improve on the good ASV, and the record not only of retrograde translation (eg, 1 Corinthians 13:08-13) but also of deliberate political manipulation of the translation (eg 1 Corinthians 06:09-10).

Thanks for this review. I've ordered one with the Apocrypha as a result. However, I should point out that we do use "..." for quotation marks here in the UK as well, but the use of '...' is often acceptable as well. And I'd use two fingers on each hand for air quotes.

Hey Tim Wildsmith. We need filament to make a premium Bible and not just in NLT or NIV. Can you imagine and beautiful Bible with clean pages, and goat/calf skins but also have the commentary with the filament app.

Even in Canada, I believe most of us prefer the Anglicized editions because we've inherited most of the British spelling and it's easy to forget our own correct spellings in a media marketplace so dominated by our neighbours to the South. Great time to pick up the outdated 89 NRSV copies before they are sold out, as they're likely out of print now. Not that there ever were many great options for it in single column premium leathers. In retrospect I think a lot of people will look at the 89 NRSV as an excellent, scholarly middle ground between the ESV and the NRSVue, which both take some liberties with interpretation but with different motivations. It will be interesting to see whether people who share my sentiment will move to the ESV or the NRSVue or stubbornly hoard their 89's forever.

The NRSV 89 will always have a spot in my heart because it was the first Bible I read all the way through. I’m a little bummed about it starting to slip out of use. I have read the NRSVue all the way through as well, and though I don’t read Greek or Hebrew, I found it to be a fairly accurate, mainline translation. It does have the couple of “interesting” choices that break even with other mainline translations like the CEB, but my opinion on them is no better than anyone else’s. These look like great, affordable editions and I might be interested in the one with the Apocrypha. I’ve never read it, and look forward to your thoughts! 👍

I basically switched from the NRSV to the NRSVue as my main electronic text as soon as Accordance released it. I’ve enjoyed it so far, especially in its marginal notes. It’s also really close to my preferred translation (~10% different from the ESV) so it makes for fun comparison (pulling the RSV alongside as well). Now I just need the Strong’s tagged text. 🙏✌️🤓 Thanks for sharing!

im a protestant and no, theres no point to read it. its not inspired or scriptural and it contradicts scripture quite alot actually and alot of the books even contradict themselves and its not really historically accurate, so i wouldnt recommend it, and dont let anyone make you think it is inspired or anything

@swamprat22 Nobody is arguing that it's inspired or scriptural. It provides inter-testamental historal context that helps you understand dynamics between Romans, Herod's family, the temple, Charisma, Messianic expectation, etc. There are plenty of not-Bible books that are worth a read.

To add on to your second comment, it's always worth reading primary sources even if they are inaccurate to the historical record. This is because, what they wrote will tell you how they viewed their world, or what they want their readers to view it like.

I have had a NRSVue since February 15, 2024! Got it from Amazon, but the cover is the fake leather. This is without the Deuterocanicals, and was $25, but with my credits got it for only $10. Currently checking it out and hope to switch to this one from the NRSV, which I never used. They seem to have improved it. The Deuterocanicals are more history than "God's word" and I appreciate having these in a Bible.

Tim, totally not the point of your video, but I literally spent all weekend trying to recall the name of that Dutch Bible binding company, Jongbloed! We were doing some fun things for Pentecost Sunday, and I was discussing the time I spent working in the Netherlands, and one of my favourite things was learning to say the benediction (2nd Corinthians 13:13) in Dutch, which I can remarkably still do. I met a man who worked as a Bible translator for both Dutch and Frisian language Bibles, he helped me and also introduced me to the work of Jongbloed. In other news, I already pre-ordered the black calf split leather edition of this same Bible before watching this. I have a kind of deep red burgundy imitation leather (Zondervan) one just now; I love the font and page layout, but sometimes find the American spelling a bit jarring. Here's a fun fact for you: 2011 editions of the Anglicised NIV (of which I have a leather edition, and our pew Bibles are the same) missed a "correction" and refers to "The Lord Our Righteous Savior" instead of "Saviour" in Jeremiah 23:6.

Has the NRSVEU stripped out even more of the Christological elements of the OT than the 1989 original? Blessed is he? Blessed are they? Instead of beginning with Christ, the choices made by the translators make us the starting point. The anthropology is wholly human-centred. By the way, we do use double quotation marks in the UK.

I have of copy of that and the ESV Diadem, and I appreciate that they are the same size on my shelf. I expect that I may pick up one of these as well if it is the same width and height as those Bibles. (I tried to compare the dimensions online, but ran across contradictory information.)

This one has me intrigued. Its a translation Ive never read. How does it compare to the NIV? The description says that It incorporates the latest discoveries from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dont all Bibles contain the info from the Dead Sea scrolls?

They usually do... it's designed to be more "word-for-word" than the NIV, so it will probably read slightly differently when you compare them.

Yet another edition without cross-references. The beautiful NRSV edited by Martin Manser had a superb set of side-column references got from the acknowledged set in the 1898 Revises Version. I have the SBL NRSVUe Study Bible, and neither does it have any cross-references. Very bad! [I’m not too keen on the translation : NRSVue is not as good as NRSV, which is not as good as RSV, which is not as good as ASV. But, I keep one of each for reference etc.. That apart, a good edition of a translation, with full translators’ notes, cross-references, concordance, etc., does commend and promote what might otherwise be thought to be not a good translation.]

The NRSV barely, if at all, appears in the annual figures of the top ten Bible sales in the US, issued by ECPA [the Evangelical Christian Publishers’ Association]; and it has never preferred by more than 4% of either General Readers or Serious Students in either the US or the UK. It has been used mostly in seminaries, colleges, classrooms. It has also been the lectionary Bible of the more liturgical churches, but even there it has not been owned by the congregations, many of which have had (if indeed they have had or used a Bible) their own individual preferences. I do not believe that the preferences for NRSVue will be much different.

I'm not Tim, but I think that may be a little too expensive. If he could get a rebinder to do anything for free, it would be unfair since it's a very involved process.
