This was a quick restoration of some thrifted Wiss Tin Snips I picked up last week at the thrift store for just a few dollars. They cleaned up well and then I blued the metal using Birchwood Casey Perma Blue and finally some Plasti-Dip for the grips.
To help support my channel, so I can continue to provide videos like this, below are Amazon affiliate links for products and tools used in this video:

I watched this video a few days ago. The next day stopped at a thrift store and saw a very similar pair (no WISS markings), but the same not and bolt pattern. Today I started trying to clean them up following your method. Thanks for an instructive video.

NIce job. A little help...I have used the DIP kind of Plasti Dip for many years. The spray on kind is junk. You did not have yours mixed well enough as the top should not have thinned out so much. Next time when mixing it up, I suggest using a piece of wood or something that is wider. When you hang them to dry, they will drip off of the bottom, but I have found the last "drip" seems to level itself out somewhat on the bottom of the handles so it looks fine when done. Your original snips had a yellow grip - I have this exact pair from years ago (70s I think?) when I bought them. These are also called aviation snips and color coded handles were put on them so a person could choose the correct pair when making a curved cut. Yellow is straight, red is left, and green is right. Popular Mechanics link to this info (different brand snips though!): tinyurl.com/y38eolet Oh...serrations. Thanks again for a great video and a great job. Now I need to go do my set up!

FYI after you dip the handles use a heat gun at low heat and speed (or a hair dryer on low), it not only helps dry it will cause the bubbles to come out. I noticed some bubbles in the dip...

I’ve never even heard of plasti dip, I’m not if sure you can get it in the U.K. though I’m probably wrong. I like the colour of the metal too. It looks like you got another fantastic thrift shop purchase. Great video thanks for making it. Have a brilliant Easter tomorrow. Just looked on eBay, there’s about 4 different makes of Plasti Dip type sprays and dips including Plasti Dip itself. I don’t half learn a lot of stuff off you.

When using most gun bluing chemicals, they get a deeper blackish color if the metal is heated up some. But the metal also has to be absolutely perfectly clean of any oils or fingerprints as well. Thumb Up!

Just an FYI note concerning Wiss snips. The brand or name of the manufacturer is pronounced "Wiss" rhymes with "Swiss" as in cheese but not Wise or wyse.. It can be easily remembered by the founder of the company 'Jacob Wiss" who came to America in 1848 from Switzerland. Wiss the Swiss. Great restoration. I grew up as a Tinners Son and used Wiss snips in the trade. I might restore a few of them myself after watching your video. I have more than a few that could use the makeover. Thanks!

Love videos a bit of a tip I've learned from working on high end folding knives. If you want to not strip the top of the screws of any type. Put a rubber band over the screw and the screwdriver. The rubber padding reduces any scratching or damage. Sorry for bad English.

Wiss tin snips are color coated. Yellow for straight Red for right angle and Green for left angle. At least I think that's right. I'm sure you can look that up.

Ok, a tin-knocker wants to cut a hole in the side of a rectangular duct for a tap. First, mark the hole. Second, put on your safety glasses if you haven’t already. Ok great, take a stout screwdriver, hold it near one edge near a corner at an angle and start smashing the side of your screwdriver with a hammer, so as to cut a rough diagonal slash across the hole you marked. Now you can wiggle the lower jaw of your snips under and start cutting. If you are cutting counter-clockwise, use your red handle snips. The part you cut the slash in with your screwdriver will flow over the lower jaw as you pull it away while cutting, leaving the finished line on the right hand side of the jaws. Most right-handed workers will prefer to cut this way but it’s not about “right handed”, it’s about the direction you are cutting. If you’re cutting clockwise, use your green handle snips. They are the mirror image and the part you are cutting away will flow over the lower jaw. Sometimes you *have* to cut this way because something is in the way otherwise. You don’t want to deform the part of the duct that remains. Yellows, shoppies love those for notching duct-I never saw any other use for them honestly.

@@Rick_Schott we used yellow snips to cut tackless to size, wooden strips with small nails pointing up. They are what holds the carpet in place at the walls.

Another thorough and well presented restoration. It may have been easier to have applied the Plastidip when the snips were apart - might have gotten a more even distribution.

eeehhhh, back when tools were actually serviceable by the people using them. Pneumatic tools these days are the worst. They used to be pretty simple to take apart and clean. I swear, planned obsolescence is real.
