@ralphsmallblock4367 I know I love it lol. Honestly I love Mustangs too, but for practical performance car that's actually reliable, the GR Carolla is probably leader of the pack. At least with AWD, the Civics are up there too but lack AWD and only now look a little more understated/blank slate. In terms of overall handling, performance and usability as a daily driver. The GR blows them away. The storage of a hatchback. Just as good if not better track handling capabilities. Plus awd & can could be converted into a rally cross to blow them away on rough country roads & snow. Along with eco mode for better mpgs...The engine could also still handle more boost to make 350- 400hp & still be reliable.

Have to remember too that they are racing at a very high elevation. That actually is an advantage for a turbocharged vehicle. The turbo has to work harder to provide the same boost it would at a lower elevation but it still does even at higher elevation. Meaning still closer to the same power as it would make closer to sea level. Even though the Mustang pulled away it would've been even more at lower elevations where the naturally aspirated engine has more oxygen to work with.

As a former 3x Mustang owner and current STI owner, I gotta say I knew the corolla was gonna beat them. They didn’t mention if it was the LSD model or not, but if he had done a proper boosted launch he would have rolled the mustang too. And at a racetrack it would have been bloody. And in any sort of weather. Dudes are super mad. That corolla handles like crazy too. And they sound better with an exhaust than I-4’s. The important thing is that too many “car guys” aren’t driving enthusiasts, they’re fanboys who try to insult every other platform Me? I love driving all different types of platforms. As long as they’re manual and analog as possible. Stop bashing. Start driving things before you judge them. Fun fact. Won’t hear many Mustang owners say this: but I had more fun in 1 afternoon rallying a stock fiesta st than I ever had with my muscle cars. Burnouts are fun too, but nowhere near as fun as liftoff oversteering that little crapbox fiesta st around on a rally type dirt road lol. One of the best tools these guys could use is a draggy for actual braking data. When you're going off cones its not 100% accurate as reaction time can play a role and where exactly you start braking is a factor. Also it would be great to swap drivers in these cars to get a better sample size for drivers that aren't as fast. Cool to see how aged cars still hold up to new stuff tho. You just don't have the best data as to how old the brake fluid is, pad/rotor, or tire condition. Also having manual vs auto isn't a perfect sample.

A year later, I went to the mailbox and grabbed my CnD magazine in late 97, to read that they tested the 98 LS1 TA 4a, and it ran a 13.2 at 108. Check the archives. That was rather generous though. I've never driven that gen corvette, but I use to smoke them on the reg, in my old TFS, e-cam, bot on na Fox, though. Can't tell you how many t5 3rd gear inout shafts I blew through. They're over a mile above sea level. An NA car loses roughly 3% power for every 1000 ft above sea level. This means the Corvette and Mustang are down about 15% power (Corvette being 293hp and Mustang being 357hp at a mile above sea level). Turbo cars don't experience nearly as much loss since forced induction compensates for much of the effects of thinner air. Forced induction loses vary depending on the car (unlike NA which is easy to calculate), so a stock turbo car a mile in elevation could lose anywhere from 1-5%. A LS1 C5 typically traps the 1/4 mile around 108-110 mph. Trap speed change is a good measure of power change (especially in an automatic car that has less room for error compared to a stick). Given the one here only trapped 96 mph, it's pretty evident it's down on power.

It does, small turboed engines can be quite powerfull. The question is usual - for how long? Will they last, say, 15 years? They aren't even made with that in mind. As for cornering, don't forget that it's japanese city compact vs american muscle car. As cornering goes, muscle cars weren't ever good at it and as I don't really know about the Mustang, I'm pretty sure that Corvette wouldn't go too fast. But I might be wrong, very much depends on the driver.

And their fun as hell to drive. I have a 2015 Focus ST that's a blast to drive. Too bad ford discontinued both those cars in the US.😢

The fiesta and the focus was Fords answer to the hot hatch arena but that dual clutch trans pos took both models out there were good looking cars and the st and rs versions fierce especially European models. My dad had a 2012 fiesta se auto not fast but it was fun to drive but in the end the trans went for a second time out of warranty and unfortunately just not worth it. I wondered if they were sold with a manual non st that would be a reliable set up perhaps but I think most sadly were autos and when ford stuck the 3 cy in the fiesta vs the 1.6 the party was over 🎉

@lincolnman78markv they did make a 5 speed manual option for the Fiesta and the Focus and if you get the ST or RS Focus they come with a 6 speed

Lord the elevation must really be killing power. With good tires and driver that corvette was perfectly capable of 13 flat off the showroom. Not to take anything away from the GR.... pretty cool

The auto was a bit slower but yeah something is off with that car. I thought I noticed a slight miss when they revved it. The slow time on the Mustang can be explained by the wheel spin. Both cars should have absolutely slaughtered the GR from a roll.

my 1998 toyota corolla was completely baseline standard everything for around 14K. I miss that car so much. Gave t to my little brother and he crashed it. That thing was so much fun to drive. Limited at 120mph which I only hit on drives back and forth from college. Never had any issues.

It's really not. People make a big deal out of it and act like it's a good thing or a cool thing. Why? You can generally do anything when you add a turbocharger and turn up the boost. I'd rather have a bigger engine that's less strained making just as much or more power, is smoother and has more potential than a toy-like go-kart engine all boosted up. And than look at the price they want for these souped up puddle jumpers, lol. No thanks. You can get a new Mustang GT for the same price and it will blow this things doors off. It can't even come close to keeping up with an almost 10 year old mustang from 2 gens past. I fail to see what's impressive about it.

@@newfie-dean5803they can build it all they want, the cooling system WILL fail. The cooling holes are tiny and will get plugged, and huge boost in a 3 cylinder will blow a gasket. Toyota are pretty unreliable already, can't imaging this thing.
