For those being negative about this being a business... This is a great way to come and experience the space firsthand for those wanting / considering this lifestyle or possibly considering this idea as a business. Tiny houses aren't for everyone but are for many just as this kind of getaway isn't for everyone but is for many. How about sharing your opinion in a better light instead of putting the business and it's owner down. It's okay not to want to experience this getaway without the need for the insults.

This makes me grateful for the balance in my life. I commute 20 minutes to work, my back yard is nothing but trees, my dogs can run in my yard, I don't look at my phone all weekend (other than to check up on family) and I can barely hear the road from my house. I hope other people get a chance to live that as well.

Blackridge I've always lived in the countryside, even when it was on the very outskirts of a city. Never looked at my phone at work because I didn't have one, the house phone was all I needed and I was a nurse so just too busy. I do feel sad for people who are glued to their phones (let's face it they aren't really phones anymore, they are devices for your boss to get in touch with you 24/7 7/52) and I'm a bit fed up at just looking at the tops of people's heads and as for earbuds! If a person that's stood next to you says something and I say pardon I don't expect some ignoramus to pull a dumb face say doh and point to his ear. I'm not against technology just bad manners.

I'm 71 yrs. young and am not understanding so much negativity re. this video and the young man who developed this lovely property? I think it's positive: 1) for those wondering what it would be like to live full time in a tiny house. 2) to give folks an opportunity to truly enjoy nature and unplug from the world. 3) the idea that making money doing something you're good at and love doing is really ok!!! Wishing him much success and the guests much peace:)

Nice video, even if it was just an opportunity for him to plug his business. To all the people hating on the hipster for his lack of bushcraft skills and such. Congrats, you just became hipsters yourselves. Nobody cares if you’re making “real” campfires with a bow drill. Certainly not anyone in his generation. His business just might be the perfect introduction for these urban millennials to get outside their cities and off their devices. I know as a father of two teens daughters that hate nature. His cabins would be an easier sell than staking tents and sleeping on the ground. Gotta ease people into the concept.

I've long wished for an entire city neighborhood like this. I feel like our urban design across north america is all wrong. By all means clear out space for the commercial areas as needed but residential should feel natural. Like a camp ground. We can have most or all of our modern trappings without living in a standardized template.

@demoiselledelamontagne
@demoiselledelamontagne 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think "being bored is what you want to achieve. What you should do, and maybe what he actually meant, is "being in the moment" or "being present" (like the buddhist teaching "here and now") - NOT being "bored". Boredom is when you're thinking about and being distracted by things you're not doing and want to do. So your mind is somewhere else instead of enjoying/appreciating the moment, the task, the surrounding, etc.

I have had this very idea in my head for years. Was so excited to see there are others who feel the same way. I grew up in a log cabin in the woods, no neighbors and miss it very much. Technology has made us spoiled and created an addiction within us. Its robbed us of the very beauty right before our eyes. We need to put down our devices and look up, see the beautiful world before us. I hope to one day have a place similar to this. And if you want to start a business in Idaho, I'll manage it for you. ;) Great video, thank you!

@kaydesign
@kaydesign 6 жыл бұрын
For the people that know how to camp, make fire etc. this concept is pretty strange. But for many people in the city this a good way to learn how to camp and re connect with nature. I live in a forrest and think it is positive and also a bit funny: ‘MyFirstCampfire’ ; )

We used to go camping regularly and I have stayed at the Getaway location in Big Bear, CA. You are paying for the convenience of the experience and, for my trip, that was OK. I didn't have to worry about the camping gear or the set up or takedown. It's definitely a different experience, but it also definitely lowers the degree of difficulty and the potential stress level.

Wow! This is exactly what i've wanted for decades! Grew up in the woods in Michigan, with a small family farm at the edge of the forest. Even had a small creek. The most wonderful way to live, and to me, the only way. Wish I hadn't ended up permanently disabled and on SSI at just 29 years old, and had been able to buy a small piece of land to do this on. Now that I'm 61, pretty much alone, and can't manage a larger house anyway, it would be so perfect. Hate the city so much. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and your wonderful projects here, absolutely wonderful!

Pricey, but I think the deal is that there are many people who can't camp -- if they tried they would spend a few grand on gear and be frustrated trying to use it on a 2 day getaway. Case in point: The couple locked their keys in their cabin... in the middle of the woods. There's nobody to steal your things, but the habit remains. The obvious goal is to turn the anxious thoughtlessness into intentional thoughtlessness for the purpose of relaxation. Some folks may be the best software developers or data analysts but not have a clue how to start a fire or how to relax lol but it's true! It seems that they offer a different sort of concierge to have guests attempt to relax by doing as little as possible, Im sure folks enjoy it, and I imagine that many more similar sites will pop up as tinyhomes/cabins become more refined and cheaper to mass produce (ironic...) Having grown up in a rural area middle of nowhere forest I remember my ears ringing from silence. After moving to a small town to work I forgot that tinitis was a thing until coming back to visit. There really is a sound of silence and it IS a deafening roar. It's possible to affordable live like this, but we're all tempted to try to do "better." Better for some is having an home in the woods on an awesome creek with a huge garden, but many sacrifice ability to produce great income as a result. We're very fortunate to have the opportunity to choose our lifestyles, and I think it's great that he's offering a temporary option geared toward urbanites while producing some honest income, building assets, that's honest work to me. Thanks for the videos, cheers!

This reminds me of a trip we took to Colorado a few years ago. We rented a cabin in Allens Park, a small town outside of Estes Park. We thought we would spend a lot of time in Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park but the front porch of that cabin was so meditative, with a gurgling stream and such beauty to look at we spent most of our time there. We did drive through the park one day and I took my horse loving youngster on a trail ride, but other than that we just enjoyed the cabin.

This is perfect for those that want to try out the camping experience but, don't have RV's or tents, etc. I think it's a really great idea. I would love to stay at a place like that sometime. It appears to be affordable way to ’get away’ from it all, as well. However, as a business, It would be a huge investment to start up a business like this tho. You would have to get a huge amount of land just to get started. It could be really expensive and take a while to start profiting from it because, it would be a seasonal thing. Tyfs!

I'm surprised by how many negative comments are on here criticizing many aspects of this person's idea turned into business. You have to understand what your paying for before critiquing the "high" prices or affordability of such a place. This person took the time/risk to understand a problem and then build/design and entrepreneurial model to address it. He designed it all according to his vision to provide his clients access to solitary experience, which is becoming a luxury in that part of the US. Can you find solitude in other ways? Can you find cheaper options? Yes, however there are trade-offs to them all. His business is built on 1 client experience, and 2 convenience. Your paying for for design and convenience! Most of these negative comments are simply out of ignorance of the entrepreneurial process. I applaud this guy for finding a solution to a problem, and then building/designing a business model that can be mutually beneficial to him and his clients. I wish more people could think and live more independently like this man, than sit and be armchair quarterback online. Good Job man!

I had an idea of buying a cheap piece of land and just set up a camp there... but i honestly afraid of some lunatic walk on me in the middle of the night sometime. i've camped in the middle of nowhere before and it can be scary at night!

Mazxlol yeah, i mean have a protection tools with you, i think it's a necessity to have, at night time you'll get used to the forest sounds and darkness. Fright will be unnoticed with the night sky.

Mazxlol This isn’t a place where bears will come or they’ll quickly go when people don’t leave food out. Plus it’s no tent which is definitely scarier.

The best way to live...grow up in a setting such as this...at/after college, live in the city for a few years while career building...then return back to where it counts...the country. (especially when you are about to raise children). I've got a 28y.o. son and can't wait until he returns from city living.

wow, I’ve seen photos all over of these cabins individually, but had no idea they were in a larger area together. I find it beautiful and a bit sad: to teach people of the wonders of nature, but that they had not yet learned them...it seems one should get the chance to build a campfire, as a child, and not from a manual. That seems like a right every child should have-to build a campfire and stare into it and laugh and talk all night with friends and family. I love that this man is a thinker-and that he is a great expressionist-he can fully articulate the tensions that most modern humans are feeling deep in their hearts.

I totally agree with this style of thinking. I have been living my life like this , almost all my life to date but I do have houses just for me and my family/friends. Only some understand this thinking, and it is not easy when you are govern by a materialistic notion, all around you; but one has to realise that it is in some way compliments, provides necessary innovations, new products , that extra time etc to enhance the freedom I want to achieve. Only negative aspect is that commercialisation of this idea once it is absorbed into materialistic stream of consciousness !🤔🌹👈❤

That is such a lovely cabin, and the view is like what he said: you don't really need much more to be content. For those saying one should camp instead: camping and staying in a cabin are two completely different yet both valid experiences, there's no reason to set one against another. It's just down to personal preferences. Me personally, I prefer cabins. I'd rent this one in a heartbeat.

Thank you for showing us this! I think this guys reflections on buisness and way of life is really good, and wise. Do something you love, and by all means, make money on it. The way he talks about balance between the two lifestyles is something I listened to, and need to incorporate more into my own lifestyle. Perhaps I need to start by making a phone lock box.

I love the video. I love forresting. I love the quiet. But if I did these cabins, what's missing is a comfortable chair to sit in if it's raining outside. And I would put windows with screens on all sides for cross ventilation, a ceiling vent fan, and a skylight. And I would cover the wheels with wood, or plantings. And they need an awning, or covered porch so you can sit outside when it's raining. Also, I prefer a Dutch door, a half door. This is good for kids and pets. I would have a well with one of those old iron hand pumps. A compost pile a ways off for composting scraps. And the camp, for me, needs a full-time resident helper dog. This looks like a good low impact use of the land! I know they are paying off loans for the 80 acres, and cabins, but the price seems high to me. I hope they eventually give discounts.

What interests me is this idea and hipcamp or one of those venues. I have just enough property in the middle of Newport News that a couple of these would be comfortable. Being in the city and very close to historic places, as well as walking distance to the bus system, it would be like camping and at a decent price, like $50 or $60 a night it would competition well with and motels around. Being able to be among trees, wildlife, maybe harvest some food from my garden and be able to easily visit historic places during the day, or even going downtown to Hampton for some music, foods and dance and come sleep in a quiet setting is a bonus. Just need some money to initially get it going. I've seen some companies that actually bankroll it and then get their money back on the rental and help promote it.
