Another inexpensive, nutritious, and tasty dish that is easy to make ahead or reheat.
***************************************************************
If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for over four years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.

Ariel, I come from a long generation of home steaders, in this same locality with out break since the 17th century. I think I can spot the genuine article, excuse the pun, a mile off. Discovered your channel quite by chance, some time before Christmas. Can spot a fake in this arena with my eyes shut. How can I , simply because I remember my Mother and Grandmother so vividly. Their hands on broad. based depth of knowledge and abilities, we're staggering, amazing and quite humiliating. Having watched a lot of your videos, and I don't know whether this comment will please or embarrass you, and having watched you put together that pie, I was back in their world, amongst kindred spirits. This is why you have such a fan club that admires you so much. As they say in my part of the world, you are the real My coy, and most people recconise the real deal when they see it. There now, got that off my chest, will have a glass of that ginger tonic Burley.Best Regards

You can do the same thing in a crockpot as well. I love using many spices as well. Lawry seasoning salt is absolutely awesome. I've been using it for 43 years, since I was 7. I wanted to help my mom make dad's fried potatoes for his breakfast. Been using it my whole life. To be honest, cabbage and potatoes go with anything. I love them both. As well as brussel sprouts and potatoes. Awesome. Sounds like Pennsylvania cooking to me. G. Murphy Southwestern Pa, Fayette County. Love your channel Ariel :)

Once I tried seasoned salt, I use it on all my meat dishes, except some Mexican food. A little goes a long way and that helps cut way back on my salt intake. Tastes sooo much better, we don't buy regular salt anymore. A little sprinkled on salad greens is good too when I don't have any dressing. 🥗. Thanks for sharing another informative, innovative, tasty recipe, Ariel. Hugs to Burley!

THANK you, Ariel for all the informative, instructive, calming, and playful with Burley videos. They are very much appreciated. Also your cooking videos. I have 2 QUESTIONS about the dandelions you gather for salads etc. What time of year is best to collect them? Also did you make another video on cooking cabbage?
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
Spring tends to be best for dandelions. Though you can pick them at any time of year. The more mature the plant, the more bitter the flavor. Which isn't bad for you, just not so pleasant to eat. Newly sprouted tender leaves are the most tasty. I do have this recipie I like for purple cabbage - kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5zVfoKpbbeenLc. And I eat it lots of other ways as well, but I don't know that I've done videos on any of the others.

Ariel. This really looks good. Do you process the elk yourself?
@FyNyth
@FyNyth 5 жыл бұрын
Yep! The elk I have is wild. A neighbor and I work together to process two elk a year which provides most of the meat consumed in both of our households for the year. That includes the hunting, gutting, quartering, hanging, aging, trimming, grinding, and packaging of the animal. (ie, we don't take them to a processor) Properly handled elk has no gamey flavor at all, just a very rich lean beef taste. Proper handling starts from before pulling the trigger, to the meat going into the freezer a couple weeks later. There is a huge elk population in this area and wildlife managers have a goal of starving 10,000 of them to death to reduce the herd. We use the whole animal. Bones turn into broth or feed the dogs who also eat any trim or parts not desired for human consumption. The only bit left when we are done is the contents of the grass sack which is basically the most recently eaten grass that is still undigested in the stomach.

@@FyNyth wow thank you so much for taking the time to answer so thoroughly. I appreciate that. They're going to literally starve to death 10,000 elk????? that is the most horrendous and inhumane thing I think I've heard in a while. A better alternative would be to advertise for maybe a week of open game hunting and I can almost guarantee people would come in there from all over the nation just to be able to hunt and reduce the herd that way. Please correct me if I'm mistaken, but I would much rather people be able to hunt them and to keep them and to eat them then for those poor animals to just starve to death. That's just ridiculous

@FyNyth

Does Elk taste gamey? Do you get it free from hunters you know or buy in the grocery? is it expensive per pound as compared to ground beef? Looks good, Enjoyed it!

sandra wyrick elk and Buffalo are both being raised for meat just like cattle more and more these days, so you could Google for elk ranchers to see if there are any in your area. I have not seen Elk meat in my local grocery stores in SW North Dakota, but I HAVE seen Buffalo meat avail.

@@sherryellesson9665 Actually I have never once heard her say that SHE does the "harvesting" herself, only that it was harvested on the landowner's property where she is situated. While "harvested" DOES most likely mean that the landowner does hunt to acquire the Elk meat, which he shares with her in exchange for all of the work that she does for him, it is also possible that he actually raises Elk for meat, just like range cattle are. Either way, yes, an Elk was killed, but then, I bet you have no problem buying beef in the grocery store, so why does it matter that she eats Elk instead of beef? Hunted (for it's meat) or ranch raised for a meat crop does not bother me. Hunting to kill an animal strictly for the "fun" of it and for the acquisition of it's head as a "trophy" is the kind of hunting that I cannot abide, which would be trophy hunting of any of the predator species.

Hi Ariel, I was really sorry to see that you’re signed up with Troy Reid’s video hosting site. The problem is the site is riddled with spyware and viruses and your videos will now become his property. You will make nothing from him, he’s just a full time ebegger and scammer. Why not visit us at Troybusters.com we are all a big fan of you being a true homesteader, also just google Troy Reid parodies. Look after yourself and be careful with Trog

Hmm. I wasn't interested in wether anyone else there was off grid or a homesteader. Or in making money. And didn't know anything about who founded the site. I'm just looking for any other video platform that allows freedom of speech. And it was suggested to me by another subscriber. Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to look more into that.

Listen to these good people, Ariel. He can't homestead, can't off-grid, can't DIY, and can't tell the truth. Ask him too many questions and he'll block you from his channel. He was offered $10,000 if he would answer ten questions on camera. He turned it down. Why would anyone do that, if they had nothing to hide? As a long time subscriber of yours, my advice would be to avoid him like the plague. All the best from the UK.

No no Ariel... your getting that wrong... Burley is sitting at your feet because he is a loyal, true, and faithful hound... Elk ??? What Elk... Burley is not so shallow as to secume to "cupboard" love lol pfffff the insult of it all lol xxx I love potato with its skin left on. They are a lot better for you but Alex my man is an uneducated Neanderthal (his whole family is from the shallow end of the gene pool lol) and will not eat them done this way, he thinks they are dirty but if they are nice fresh pototes, well washed, no problem. Otherwise you are throwing away good fibre n vitamins xxx On the menu here today is Sweetpotato (I do peel them) and bacon soup followed by creamy rice pudding for lunch and a chicken Jalfrazie curry with boiled rice (Alex will have French fries with his cos he doesn't like boiled rice either, Neanderthal !!!) lol xxx Have a great day Ariel and Burley xxx

Burley eats elk, beef, turkey, chicken, fish, seafood, and all their parts, bones, organs, etc. so he's pretty well fed. The veggies and fruits are just something I share occasionally when I'm eating them. :)

I noticed a metallic sounding echo with each chop of your knife in this video that I have never noticed before. Not an issue of course, but it was just driving me nuts trying to figure out why that metallic sounding echo was happening because I KNOW your countertop is wood, as are most surfaces in your lovely little house, but I think I have solved my self induced “riddle” I figure that it must be the shockwaves bouncing off of the heat shield panel protecting the end of the counter from the furnace like heat of the wood stove. Any other theory as to it’s source?
@dells85
@dells85 5 жыл бұрын
Just noticed that the metallic echo only happens during the overhead parts, so perhaps it’s from the sound bouncing around in the newly enclosed shelving? Again, it’s not really an issue and by no means detracts from the audio quality of the videos, it was just a riddle that I was trying to figure out.
@FyNyth

I think it's actually that thin bamboo cutting board. It's warped just a bit over the years so it doesn't sit perfectly flat and makes a bit of an echoing sound as it rocks slightly when I chop things on it.

joking aside, it could be a combination of food eaten with the cabbage and reacting in the stomach, plus how well the cabbage is cooked b4 eating, and as u imply how peoples digestion system differ and break down the plant...but its good to know Burley is not in danger from u ;)

I think some folk do have a hard time digesting plants in the brassica family for sure. I just guess that there's a connection between something going on in the digestive system and that gassy result. Cooking or fermenting does seem to help in that case.
