Recipe and links for everything I mention are below. A good meal for a crowd as well as being easy to prep ahead. And you can make this with all kinds of different combinations.
Shepherds Pie:
1 onion
1 head garlic
2 T. oil
1 pound ground meat
1/2 t. salt
4+ cups veggies (peas, mushrooms, corn, carrots, beans, etc.)
1 1/2 cups milk
2 cups bone broth
2 T. arrowroot powder
marjoram
oregano
rosemary
basil
pepper
Top:
6 cups potatoes
3 T. butter
2 t. salt
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until top is slightly crispy. If refrigerated first, plan on baking more than an hour to get warm through.

If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth in general, welcome and congratulations on joining the Fy Nyth Flock! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for more than three years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.
Check out a few of the videos below to catch up on what goes on here!

My s.o. grew up in Manchester England and when I thought I was making shepherds pie, he informed me if it had beef, it is cottage pie. Shepherds pie has lamb, and hunters pie has game meat in it(deer, elk, rabbit, etc.). Then the veg is onion, carrots, peas and all is topped with mashed potatoes. The meat and veg are cooked with little moisture then topped with mash and baked for about 30 min and shredded cheese can be added for the last 10 minutes. The cheese may be a “northerner’s” addition but is how his mum cooked it.

venison is deer meat, with beef its called cowboys pie..but we do call it shepherds pie regardless, but in restaurants if it says shepherds pie on the menu it will be made with mutton..its a good dish any meat you use...I would love to try it with elk meat, I'd say that would be so good!!

That looks so good! I'm wondering what elk tastes like. The way they use to make it here in New England was always with a layer of corn kernels on the bottom, but now I only rarely eat corn. It just doesn't taste as good as it used to, as I bought them at a grocery store. Locally grown probably would taste better. I too prefer steaming things a bit to get them cooked through, more quickly & gently - while using less electricity! When cooking asparagus, I can lay them in a wide pan & let them steam gently, in a low amount of water, with the cover on. Once softened, most of the water has been cooked off & absorbed, so I just add butter & maybe some herbs - like Bouquet Garni. When sauteing veggies, I start with a bit of water in the pan, & cover them - on med-low. Then finish them with a light drizzle of garlic infused olive oil, or a 1/3 tsp coconut oil & add herbs, maybe some spices, & S&P. - pink Himalayan & a touch of fresh ground Tri-color or black, & saute them for a while to absorb some flavor from the herbs, turn the burner off & let sit covered. The only time I don't start veggies by steaming in a small amount of water is if caramelizing onions or sauteing garlic in oil to remove from the oil & add to sauteed veggies, a soup or stew, etc. I use enough oil to have some garlic infused oil to add to a steamed saute. Even "poached" eggs are better when cooked in a low level of water + a cover - on a med low & then reduce to low heat to gently, partially set the yolks & whites. The same works with "over easy" eggs, but I don't use water - just the cover & a low setting, so I don't have to turn the eggs over. This allows the heat of the pan to slowly steam set the yolks & tops. I recently decided to try starting bacon in water, then pouring the water off once cooked enough. Then letting them sit in the pan until crispy. I read this idea somewhere, but haven't tried it yet. They mentioned that the bacon doesn't curl or shrink up as much this way! I like leaving the skins on the potatoes too. They add so much flavor & nutrients. I really like them when baked & the skins get crispy because after scrubbing them with a veggie brush, I'd put Olive oil in my palm & rolled the skins in oil, then salted them. Haven't made them in years. I love watching cooking segments, & appreciate your waste not - want not sensibilities - like removing food from the pans before dumping them in the sink, & then was thrilled to see you using arrowroot as a thickener! Don't mind me - I'm an old lady now, so can feel happy about these little things. I once ate at a vegetarian friend's house & he'd made Japanese style fried Tempura veggie sticks - carrot & maybe zucchini & green beans (?) ... using Arrowroot for the batter! That was many years ago. I can't recall the rest of the meal anymore - which was very delicious - but never forgot that light, delicate Tempura batter on those veggies - which were not at all greasy!

I just had sheppards pie for lunch yesterday. Local sub shop has dinner specials. Wednesday is sheppards pie day and if you get there on time you can get some. Theirs is pretty basic though. 8" tin, beef burger layer, corn layer, generous mashed spuds and more generous gravy topping. YUM. I can't help but notice the annoying water pump. If that bothers you also you can isolate it by mounting on spongy rubber and using flex connections in the piping with a loop , or just maybe wrapping in some insulation.

It sure does! Any time I'm using it, but that's no big deal for me. That's just how water pumps work, you just don't hear them much if they are at the bottom of a well or in the municipal water station instead of your house. I love sweet potatoes in all kinds of things!

The shepherd's pie I grew up with was different than yours but I think that is great because both recipes are fantastic. Thanks for the video recipe Ariel.

I'm still a little paranoid from the last time I had a Shepard Spy. He just keeps wandering around and watching me! Wonderful recipe, I make mine with ground bison. Margarine is CANCER.

Ah, yeah that makes sense. Though usually in the areas of the States I've lived in, it seems to be made with beef and called the same name. :) I've never heard of a cottage pie over here.

Let it be known to all, especially to Lady Ariel, that the second time was MUCH better. I actually remembered to put more than a mere hint of Himalayan Salt this time and the pepper and other spices were just perfect. I eased up on the sauce and put a LOT less milk in the spuds and the meat layer was firm and the mashed went on like a layer of frosting. It may have taken me a while but I think everyone will enjoy this tonight. Again, thanks, Ariel!

Looks really yummy, have not made it in awhile. I will give your version a try. I avoid corn as well so I have used Tapioca and potato starch as thickeners. I will try the arrow root. As always thank you so much for your videos. I very much enjoy them.

Elephant garlic those are huge, are you sure they look like potatoes LOL, shepherds pie is my favorite , some times i use a sweet potato , love that you use a lot f garlic, and i have mashed potato cause i was cooking for MOM, ground elk oh boy , for some one that looks so thin and cooks so great (what do you do with the left of overs , can i have some ), like it that you cook on the fly your cooking is to taste not to a strict recipe , i can smell it all the way down here, some times on special occasion i make a pie crust , Do you ever make a meat pie with beals seasoning??, WOW that's a lot for one person , yum yum , whens suppa ??

I love Shepherds/Cottage pie ! I know this video is getting a little older now, but please please please please dont scrape things off the chopping board with the blade of the knife life that. Flip it over and use the flat side. You can damage and or chip the blade and greatly reduce the life span of your knives. The looks like such a nice knife, it would be a shame to ruin it!

Happy Valentine's day Ariel, love the long skirt, and bare feet. I have never had Shepard's pie, so what time is dinner. I will have to rewatch and make it for myself. Give grizzly a big hug and kiss. She seems to be a sweet heart, like her mom.
