I love this hearty soup in cold weather! And it's a pretty inexpensive and nutritious way to feed a lot of people.
***************************************************************
If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. I live off grid (as in no physical connection to public utilities) in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming. I've been living this lifestyle for over four years now and love it! What will you find if you follow my channel and watch my videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. I split my own wood for heat, carry my water by hand, and attempt to grow as much of my own food as I can between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from my mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
I live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning sceanery and wildlife that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of of the nature and wildlife around my home. If you are interested in my photography or purchasing a photo, I'd love if you follow that over at Facebook.com/ArielCelestePhotography or ArielCelestePhotography.zenfolio.com!
For a bit of my background, as a child, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend much of my free time exploring and playing in the woods. Little has changed now that I'm older I suppose. I moved to a place with a bigger woods and still enjoy spending my time outside gardening, hiking, exploring, and photographing the natural world around me. As the eldest of seven children who grew up in a homeschooling family, I had the opportunity, not always appreciated at the time, to learn to do quite a bit of work. I've enjoyed a wide range of jobs, everything from greenhouses and flower arranging to wilderness therapy with teens, to milking cows. Mostly, I enjoy doing the kinds of things that I think provide a real service or value to others. Some of my other hobbies include backpacking, hosting people, cooking, preserving food, anything to do with nutrition, reading, journalling, and sitting around a fire and talking to my close friends.
Check out a few of the videos below to catch up on what goes on here!

Hello beautiful and Burley too, sitting here hungry and was wishing you lived down the road from me. So I could get some of that delicious soup. But guess I'll have to settle for something less delicious, delicious. I see you just wore Burley out today, maybe he needs a reprieve from the long walks. No he loves them i know, wish I lived there just so i could let the little girl run free, but i live on a busy road. Ariel give Burley a big hug for me and you be safe.

Can you can the left overs? And if so, how would you do it? Water bath or pressure canner? and how long?

You certainly could! Like most lower acid foods, a pressure canner would be recommended for beans. I think about an hour and a half at ten pounds. Depending on your altitude.

I appreciate your videos, to me they are very soothing to watch and a way to relax. I also like things organized and how to videos, and when you pulled out that grocery list "DA DA", need to see that up close. If you would like to do a video on how you came up with your list, how you put it together and all the other tips you have for your chart and grocery trips, certainly would love to see those. I've seen many grocery lists, but never an entire kitchen food list like that one, very interested in it and ideas. thank you.

Yum! Never met anyone that uses as much garlic and onions in their cooking as I do, until watching your videos. Worcestershire is a three syllable word, most people accentuate the 'cester' part of the word which makes it four syllables but it is actually Worce-ster-shire with 'Worce' being the dominant sound.

I have found that people that don't like onions, tomatoes, garlic etc. Have a problem with textures not flavour. Some textures are unpleasant to them but as you said if you puree you keep the flavor but unify the texture. Okra and onions can get "slimy" in soups but change the cooking method and the texture becomes acceptable to them. Soup looks great to me though.

Looks like 15 bean soup. I like to cut up a slice of thick Wright's applewood bacon in all my beans and greens, and fry it almost crisp in the pot before adding the veggies. In the South, we say: 'Woos-tah-sheer'. I keep Liquid Smoke in my pantry at all times. That looks SO good!👍🏻

There was a tribe in ancient Britain called the Weogora, in whose countryside the Romans built a camp called a Castra. This became Worcester which was in a shire or county between Birmingham and Gloucester (another Roman camp). My mother who was from Massachusetts where there is another Worcester taught me that the Worcester part of it was pronounced as wister. But due to English being a strange and ancient language the sauce is probably a carry over from something the Romans did. So say it anyway it pleases you and have an outstanding feast .

The soup looks good. You needed that big pot! I like your laminated grocery list. I did something similar once except instead of alphabetical order I listed items in the order I come to them in my favorite store. So when I went shopping I could efficiently zip through the grocery store. Then they renovated the store and moved everything! I gave it up and reverted back to my old list writing method. Now I might try your alphabetical, laminated method!

Worcestershire: pronounced wus-ter-sher, a county in the West of England . (By the way the sauce of that name is not a vegetarian ingredient as it contains anchovy.) I've just sown climbing beans in cells, some of which will be used green and some will be for drying. We still have some left from last year for making recipes like this one. We're a bit ahead of you weather-wise, today was also carrot sowing day.

We have a similar style of cooking. Mine is from cooking for myself for over 5 decades. Thanks to parents who were both good cooks I learned early on that being able to cook for oneself is kind of important. Especially if your course is a singular one like mine. I actually made a big pot of chicken veggie soup earlier this week which is now going into freezer containers for later this summer. Thank you for sharing with us.

Was wondering why those beans were taking so long because they cook very speedily for me--never thought of elevation! My town is at 73 feet above sea level; that's quite a bit of difference. Beans cook quickly here. Also I boil beans for five minutes before leaving them to soak overnight.

A pot of soup like I've never seen before Ariel. Come October soup is one of my favourite meals. Usually get three days feeding from one good pot, then let it hail rain or snow. See that recipe uses beans instead of the floury potatoes I usually use and does not call for good stewing meat, invariably my soup also has full head of celery along with lots of carrots, onions etc. Definitely will be trying your recipe come next October. Did you ever make potatoe bread, Ariel, another of my Winter favourites. Great with fried bacon and few fried eggs, just what the old doc ordered, and a batch will last days, Regards

Ummmm, French Market Bean Soup, one of my favorites. I make mine almost exactly the same except I add some celery. I love lots of onion and garlic too! I haven't used Worcestershire sauce or liquid smoke though. I bet Cumin could replace the liquid smoke since it gives a smokey flavor as well. I also add 1/2 cup of white wine about 15 minutes before eating. Now you've got me craving this soup! 😉 I'll add that bean mix to my grocery list!! BTW, I love watching you cook, thank you for videoing! I'm 65 and have always loved to cook. Hi again! Yay you're cooking! That will be delicious! By the way how do you store your garden goodies?? I know the onions like you have last probably some potatoes but what other ones. That's awesome how long they last and still are edible. Yes garlic and onions mmm good. Make everything better along with butter !?! Lol what they say!!! Thx as always and see you next time...

Depends on the veggie. I can, dry, ferment, freeze, and store anything I can grow above what I eat fresh.

Your soup looks wonderful. I always enjoy your videos. Can you tell me how you estimate your propane usage, or do a future video on the topic. Thank you!

Thanks! Well having been here for quite a few years now, I don't really have to estimate now. I know that I fill all my tanks about once every other year. I have three 100 pound tanks and two 40 pound tanks.

Beautiful fruit bowl 😊. Ive wondered- don’t you ever get lonely there in your little tiny house? I have five kids and I think, in part, I watch your videos because I envy you the quiet and peace I see there, which I am missing in my own crowded life. But at the same time I think it might be lonely too. Just curious about your feelings, your backstory, if you feel like sharing. Learning to be content alone, to enjoy my own company, is on my list of things to do.

The short answer is no, I really enjoy the peace and quiet. But I discuss my thoughts on that in a lot more detail in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZ-ucp98m8-pl5Y

Thanks Ariel, I watched your linked video, really appreciate your opening up so candidly. I know we are all just strangers here but it still feels quite friendly:) I think I like your videos even more now that I understand you better. I was so surprised you did couchsurfing! Must have been a fascinating past life lol

Ariel presume you intend making what we call "Windy Soup" as after you have eaten it and it sin your stomach, the gasses get to work and shall we say for the sake of impropriety Brailey will be looking at you all funny like as if to say "Wasn't me Mum, I swear!"

While some folks certainly have that problem, it's usually due to a missing element in their digestive system or poorly prepared beans. Soaking and rinsing (one reason canned beans do tend to make folks gassy as they are not prepared that way) cooking thoroughly, using enough salt as that helps further break down the oligosaccharides, and eating them regularly all help. I don't get any gas from eating beans I prepare. There's quite a few good resources for learning more about that if anyone's interested - www.realfoodforlife.com/beans/ www.nourishingdays.com/2011/03/why-beans-are-hard-to-digest-8-tips-for-making-them-easier-on-the-belly/

It looks yummy, it also looks kinda like chili. How is the stove holding up? I know this one uses batteries for the ignition. Have you had to change them yet?

@@FyNyth I think you got an amazing deal on that, it seems like a great stove, even after all the waiting you had to do to get it.
