this is absurd. rabbits breed so prolifically they are either a pest or source of food, or pet for some. imagine if this person put this much effort into saving the homeless person on their street corner! That would be something to celebrate!

I'm glad these babies survived because neither she nor her vet seem to know much about rabbit moms and babies. Mom didnt reject them. Rabbits, wild and domestic, don't stay on the nest and nurse the babies on demand like dogs and cats. They only nurse once or twice every 24 hours, and often this is at night. Then they leave them to avoid drawing attention to them. (Deer and other prey animals do something similar.). They didnt fall out of the nest because they were hungry. They rolled out unintentionally because the nest was disrupted, probably because it had been moved. (Rabbit breeders provide expectant moms with a nest box to avoid this very thing.) Moving them so soon after birth was also risky. (Where were her student's parents during all this?) I'd have given them a week. These babies looked to be 24-48 hours old. I volunteered at a shelter taking care of the rabbits for years. We had the occasional accidental litter and many times I had to convince the staff not to remove the babies and try to hand-rear them because the mom was "neglecting" them. Never once saw a mother rabbit actually reject a litter in the decade plus that I was there. Like I said I'm glad it all worked out for the best but she misread the situation.

Came here to say similar. It's just lucky that it worked out in the end, but they definitely shouldn't have been moved initially.

I don't know much about rabbits but immediately thought her reading of the situation sounded weird. Even cats leave the babies alone for periods of time.

i agree! i imagine they got the colostrum but i would still think they'd be better off getting as much milk from their mom's body as possible. i'd just worry about them getting enough antibodies and important things from her in that short period of time. also i hope they have LOTS of room to stretch their legs in that classroom. she must really trust her students, too. 😬 let's just say there's absolutely no way i'd let like 30 different kids have access to my bunnies and risk one of them accidentally harm them. some kids don't know how to be quiet and gentle, which isn't a crime, but i wouldn't subject bunnies to a SCHOOL setting. it feels kinda like a disaster waiting to happen

Having animals in the classroom is such a wonderful experience for the students. 8 years ago my son’s kindergarten teacher got a grant to have a classroom pet(s) and she adopted two baby Guinea pigs. My son was totally enamoured by them and would spend most of his free play time with them. She also used some of the grant money to buy an egg incubator because a local farm offered a school program where they would provide the eggs & take the chicks back once they were hatched. The amazement of the kids seeing the eggs hatching was such a precious moment. I actually work at the school so I have had the opportunity each year to see another group of kids experience the joy of having animals in their classroom. And since that first year she has added in even more animals experiences, the Guinea Pigs were replaced with a Bunny (who has the run of the whole classroom) and each spring they raise butterflies, frogs and chicks. Last year she added ducklings as well and they were a hit! Watching them splash around in the water was so fun 😊 At the end of the school year they visit the farm where the chickens and ducks will live and learn about shearing sheep, get to milk a goat, ride ponies and play right inside the pen with piglets, baby goats, bunnies, ducks & chickens and in a different barn they can play with baby chicks and ducklings, kittens and occasionally puppies too. There is also a hayride into the field to see the cows and they sometimes get the opportunity to feed a calf a bottle. Each and every kid should have an opportunity like this.

I've been raising rabbits for decades, they got extremely lucky. Baby rabbit kits need the enzymes from the mothers stringy stool added to the milk, in order for the baby's gut to process roughage/ hay and such. If the mother rejects the kit/s goat's milk mixed w/ a bit of mom's stringy stool does the job ever time, also don't forget to latrine the kits after feeding.
