Well today I learned that nearly every bodily problem I have (crowded teeth and bad gums, dark eye circles, narrowish face, eczema, dry lips and skin, sinus and throat congestion), were completely preventable if someone had just told me to fucking breathe through my nose.

You can breathe through your nose and have all of those problems, though. It's having your tongue slathered onto your palate that would have made the difference. You can breathe through your nose but still have your tongue sitting at the bottom of your mouth, which would still cause malocclusion and improper growth of the maxilla and mandibles.

One thing I can admit is when you breath through your nose (being a mouth breather) my anxiety and all anxiety related issues have decrease. I would highly recommend breathing though the nose. Just do not expect it to fix all of your problems.

My front teeth were meeting each other, so it was difficult to chew foods unto smaller bites. To cut a along story short, I have my teeth corrected. I also trained myself to breathe through my nose. Over time, I found myself breathing deeply through my belly without even thinking of it. My upper chest looks better, too. My skin color improves a lot. After learning my basic biology, I figured out that being easily stressed was due to poor quality of air I inhaled. My blood work shows a bit higher acidity, causing me more problems. Just discovered mewing a month ago while searching ways to breathing properly because last year I vowed that I'll breath like a normal person this year( then Corona was like: NO)...have long standing sinus issues, allergies, left nostril mostly blocked,my voice sounds like I have pinched my nose permanently, have overjet and slight arch collapsed, lower jaw slightly going to the right because of malocclusion, disordered breathing since I can remember( during childhood it's less severe because I was young, and physically active, also less amount of junk food that we have today), essentially disordered sleep because of mouth breathing...always gasping for air, repeated nasal infections, knew that most of my health problems stems from these...knew also that stopping mouth breathing would help these issues...reminded myself to always close my mouth whenever I catch myself doing old habits...also ate better and exercised, felt better but it's not doing the trick... something's missing....then I started raising tongue against palette with a slight upward pressure, teeth almost touching but not clenching, closed lips/mewing ( I did this all the time)and in the afternoon my left nostril got unblocked... apparently my sister, who also have mild allergies have this tongue position all along and she didn't develop bad teeth/ her allergies sinus issues are very mild( I'm the one with the sensitive nose so family members were annoyed at my complaints about smoke, perfume, detergents and fabric softeners, strong chemical odors, dust, etc... can't help it...gets headache and more stuffy nose, only benefit that I can think of rn is I can smell/taste spoiled food better than them LOL). Noone's going around telling other people they meet like" Hi I'm XXXX, where do you rest your tongue?"LOL...Found out from comments on mewing that some people naturally have tongue positions up their palettes....so I thought this might be the thing that I was doing wrong all this time....continued doing so for a month now...told a an asthmatic friend about it, he tried, and found it really hard to do. He reported he can't breath if he does it, figures cos he's a complete mouth breather( he must have drawn air completely through his mouth,no surprise there because he had it worse with his asthma, he has collapsed arch, crooked teeth, one nostril completely blocked and he didn't do other lifetyle changes before he tried).... Being able to breath through the nose for a long time feels great..dust and smell sensitivity lessened, I don't wake up with my mouth open anymore... I still have a lot to do besides mewing but it's a great start. It's not a silver bullet or a miracle cure. Still have enlarged adenoids from a long standing infection/ systemic inflammation...If it comes with the added bonus of improving facial aesthetics then I'll gladly welcome it. LOL. I'm in my early 30s now. Took a long time to piece together stuff. Had I known about this sooner it would have saved me a lot of frustration among other things. ...I guess better late than never. The benefits of staying up late in KZbin yielding good results LOL(internet's crappy during the day). Now all I have to do is (1) fix sleep schedule while waiting for companies to provide fast internet speed in the morning,(2) stay alive with this pandemic to see it through.

This is really strange because I was looking for a different video to correct my tongue posture and improve my voice by releasing tension, because I've been doing this for years - without even realising it was a thing - never mind something people are teaching others. I started to do it many years ago because I heard on a show that models do it to give themselves a good neckline in photos - and it does. So I just figured out how to do it until it became a habit. I do it all the time now without realising. I had teeth that were straightened when I was younger and they're slowly going back into position - in fact I thought that this position was one of the reasons why they were moving, because it can push a little against the back of your front teeth (causing them to stick out slightly). I also do acting and this encourages tension in your mouth and the bottom of your tongue which actually affects the quality of your voice negatively. Which I'm now trying to correct. Also, i wouldnt say I achieve great health benefits from this either. So this is really weird that these videos are saying otherwise. I only have my experience to go off, but this is really strange

@@ixiyd8yd8yf8 Hey wow it’s been quite some time I forgot I made this. Well, I had braces, so I think it didn’t really make much of a difference. Plus I was 16 - a little bit old for mewing. Not only that but it took me many months to get mewing into actual regular posture. I think I made a slight facial improvement (maybe like +5% looks bonus). Upon getting my overbite “fixed” by my orthodontist using elastics, I feel like it pulled my midface down and it looked a little bit longer than when I was a kid. Mewing did seem to reverse that slightly after looking at photo comparisons. I also tried chewing gum once I got my braces off to build a stronger jaw line. A couple days ago, while I was chewing some gum I took it too far. I chewed for like an hour and a half. Shortly after spitting it out, I felt my jaw was unable to move left-to-right without jittering and making scaring clickin sounds. So if you’re going to use chewing gum please be careful - no more than 30 minutes a day or else you will develop jaw joint problems. I was also a mouth breather for like 5 years (ages 5-10) due to asthma. This problem caused me to be more susceptible to jaw joint problems. So yeah hope this helps.

Love It. Thank you ❤️ Once I started retraining my tongue to the correct position my face appearance has improved significantly. Finally, I feel like I have a desired support in my upper face and no more tear trough/ under eyes hollowness nor droopy cheeks and droopy lips corners. My face looks happy and youthful. Repositioning my tongue took at least 10 years away from my face. My husband even asked me if I did any fillers 😉 Retraining your tongue is worth the effort.

@@amellk1111 there’s a variety of ways to do it. Method 1. Literally just swallow your spit (or whatever else happens to be in your mouth). Your tongue automatically sticks to the roof for a brief moment. Hold it there while that small window occurs. Method 2. Say the word “Sing”. This will stick the back portion of the tongue to the top. Now just stick the front part on and BOOM the whole tongue is on the roof of the mouth.

@@bellachance1206 Well I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error. For the first couple weeks I just put the tip on the roof of my mouth But I got that sorted out quickly and learned to do the ENTIRE TONGUE instead Then after like 3 months I could finally make it a habit to have my tongue on the roof of my mouth. In November I got my wisdom teeth removed so my jaw joints got all messed up for a month which really scared me - I couldn’t open my mouth all the way. But they’ve gone back to normal thank goodness. Then a month ago, a friend of mine said you’re supposed to have your teeth together 🤦‍♂️ so I started doing that finally. So while yes, I have technically started 6 months ago, I had no clue what I was doing until recently so that sucks. Overall, I’d say I look a bit better. It depends when you ask me that because my emotions towards the way I feel about my appearance fluctuates every couple days even if the differences are minimal. It’s also hard to say because I took like 20 progress photos in August and they all have different lighting and in different locations and different distances from the camera so I don’t have a truly scientific way of knowing. P.S. There’s so much to mewing it’s a lot more than just simply tongue posture. There’s also body posture, neck posture, chewing hard foods, tongue swallowing, and keeping teeth bite together (gently).

Now looking back i realize that it was simply because they didn't have any thing to gain or lose by telling me. I think back to my school years and have all kinds of memories of girls just starting at me. I took it wrong again because of a low self-esteem and wondered what was wrong with me. I think so. Putting pressure on the palate with your tongue will probably remind you to keep it there. As you continue this habit your tongue will remember to stay in this position similar to muscle memory and it will naturally sit there without having to exert so much pressure. Just remember to keep your mouth close when doing this, which is my biggest challenge :)

Does anyone know if these techniques can be followed whilst wearing retainers from previous orthodontic treatment?

@@happypure13 well, retainers are a retractive form of orthodontics & work AGAINST the forces of mewing. Mewing aims to push the maxilla forward while retainers are designed to hold growth back.

Yo. I've been resting my tongue on my pallet for years now. Not because of orthopedics, but because I was pissed off whenever I accidentally bit my tongue. Good thing I have been doing it, so I'm used to it.

I couldn't put my tongue on the roof of my mouth until I strengthened it through tongue strengthening exercises seen on the internet repeating the movements 10 times and 3 times during the day that is doing 3 sets of 10 more repetitions at different times of the day, like I didn't know what was right I did all the ones I found in about 15 days I can place my tongue on the roof of my mouth more easily the most important exercise is the tongue smacking movement that makes a sound like a horse's stepping on the ground which is co co co co , but it is not the literal pronunciation of the syllable , you must imagine the kicks of a horse hitting the ground I did this 3 series of 30 repetitions each , in this the whole tongue goes up to the roof of the mouth and goes down , I do this many series because I went to the speech therapist for a while and she gave me this series of exercises for some exercises that she gave me, and my tongue is a little sticky and she manages to place it on the roof of her mouth easily through this strengthening I started mewing these days and I hope for results.

I'm currently using a combination of correcting my tongue posture, chewing gum and using the breathing techniques from "The Oxygen Advantage" which seems to be working well. Breath by James Nestor also has a lot of useful info on this subject.

Not sure if I understood this correctly, but doesn't pushing up on the upper row of your teeth only change the alignment of your upper teeth and leave the bottom teeth unaffected?

The entire upper surface (or as much as possible) of your tongue should rest against the roof of your mouth. Create suction between the two surfaces

There's a dentist who wrote a book about how people who ate natural food since their childhood (mostly meat) would have perfect, flawless teeth. So many health problems could be so easily avoided if we breathed correctly and didn't eat so much junk lol.
