Rads! 8 always made the mistake of looking down at the snowboard instead of feeling it. Like a learner in a car looking at the gear stick shifter.. It put my weight over the toe edge too much and I caught edges and or had to ride out on toe side. I've cleaned this up by keeping the head up and allowing lower body to do the rotation. Looking at trees target fixation keeps head and eyes up. Brain gets extra signals for balance through vision so having the horizon always in view super helps. So many Doneks on the hill and people killing it. 🤙 Qupla'!!

I think the biggest realization was that it's not really a full 180 degree rotation, cuz that would cause you to over-rotate, but that it's more like only 90 degrees, since you are riding away going the other direction than when you initially started

@lucifermorningstar44485 жыл бұрын
Great tips Ryan, makes perfect sense! Question, what grade is the run you were on? You seem to use that one a lot. Some of it looks steep like a Red, but some of it looks super mellow like a green. Bear in mind I’m from the UK and I believe the European grading system is different. We have green, blue, red and black. Happy Shredding and QAPLA!
@RyanKnapton5 жыл бұрын
This was in a blue, but most of was taped near the bottom of it where it's more like a green. Very easy run is best for working on em.

I keep forgetting I want to try to think about it and butter to my same edge. I have always just gone to the other edge. when I sit here and think and watch. It looks like you are changing direction slightly and more at lower speeds. When going same edge. But at a faster speed it doesn't seam like it would be as smooth. When I butter 180 it seems to be more all in the same direction and line. Resulting in being able to do it at a faster speed. So I am going to try to remember to try it your way and see how it feels?

Question.. When should I start learning switch? Picked up snowboarding again last season after 14 years. Only went about 3 times as a kid. Last season I went about 8 times. This season I've gone 6 times already. Made sure to get the Peak Pass cuz I'm in New England so I can go as much as possible this year. So I'm not sure if I should get better first or get to learning switch now. I'm pretty confident on all greens and blues. This season I've been really trying to work on clean carving lines like you've been demonstrating. Thanks!! -Kyle
@RyanKnapton5 жыл бұрын
I don't that there's any specific right or wrong time. But it starts with just making the mindset to do it, and then even if you can make it 10 feet without falling, hey it's a start!

@dimitrioskalfopoulos34735 жыл бұрын
Hey I’m a older snowboarder and wondering how I can get better? I am trying your videos and skills you recommend but after 20 years I feel that I’m still not as smooth. I have a rocker type board and it is awesome but because I live in the east I go to Tremblant and blue mountain lots of ice. Thanks for your videos
@RyanKnapton5 жыл бұрын
Ice can be tricky for good carving... But otherwise often just slowing down more, working horizontally across the run more, and then easing into using more tilt and pressure on the board. But again, that can be extremely challenging on icy conditions.

They generally don't hold up to aggressive riding on hardpack because they're usually soft, rockered, etc. They are wide so if you take it slow you can carve without booting out. I recall a video last year of Jeremy Jones carving groomers on a Storm Chaser. In the Yawgoons series you'll see Dylan Gamache doing his fancy carving tricks on a Slush Slasher. I have that same board, as well as a wide Donek, but I mostly ride regular freestyle boards--so I'm on a variety of boards regularly.

What mountain is this?
@mpix005 жыл бұрын
Just what I need, Thanks Ryan. I was over rotating and going to my toe edge also! Heel to heel baby, sweet and the pointing to a tree is key! I have a 2018 DOA which is about a 5.5 stiffness out of a 10, but the nose and tail to this board is a slight reverse camber which enables a really nice butter. I will initiate with a quicker , softer absorbed turn and get this edge to edge going! I really like the way that you can initiate your roll with a powerful yet rhythm balance, but that's probably more to your board being stiffer in the nose and tail for a better controlled push off, would you say?
@RyanKnapton5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have the mechanics of it in you're head right. For the flex, mostly that's for hard chargin carving and not having the board get noodly. I guess same for the butter too... Can ride the edge longer and balance on it.... Best luck and happy shreddin!
