I used to compare myself to others soo many times. Sometimes I found artists that are the same age as me but are much better than me. But now, if it ever happens to me, I tell myself that I'm myself, I'm not them and I'll never be them. And sometimes, when that doesn't help, I tell myself that I'm better than anyone else, because I'm unique and nobody's art is the same as mine. That's kinda selfish but it sometimes helps.
@the_bob_1477 жыл бұрын
Dārta Petruņko better being more selfish than feeling like trash ;-; i know this is even more selfish but don't compare with arrists but with your friends/classmates/coworkers/family that aren't arrists because they don't know how to draw and you know at least something you are on a good way of being a great artist :D (actually just writing this is already boosting my self confidence, i kinda need it now ':D)

In a bad mood for practicing or sketching I say to myself "let's go and watch some Jel videos and learn something new" You say the words every beginner artist would like to hear to believe in yourself and not give up on a dream to become a professional!!! I wish your own art dreams come true ❤

Thank you! I listen to a lot of artist issues videos. I found yours to really inspire. I used to draw, mostly through the age 18-29. I stopped to pursue music and had children and marriage. Now I am 54 and the kids and husband are gone. I started with a ebay sketch pencil set and koh-i-noor watercolors. For 6 months now I have my artist quality supply budget each month and am building on watercolor, drawing, Inking and soft pastel. I am identifying my areas of weakness and studying. When I see that I have new skills, I try to get an image of where or how I caught on. I am improving, sometimes it feels like a big jump, often it feels like I am not moving at all. Why do we challenge ourselves so? For me this is a hobby turned into I want to learn quickly, study and practice with all my heart, and then give myself permission to rest. Watch a few shows that have nothing to do with art, take a day off painting but watch artists who I learn from paint all day. I dont need to expect anything from myself other than to do my best. Now, on to some tuts on foreshortening in florals, if I can find any, or of course, drawing roses! xoxo

Sometimes when I get art block, I've found that it helps to change things up a bit. Like, get new art supply or supplies and play around with them. And about comparing your art to other artists, I think I still do that WAY to much. I think it'll help to just remember that they've been at this longer than you have, and to just give it some time.

To help other people... what makes me inspired/motivated is everyday life and events. I write stories, draw, and sing, so when a girl at my school gets rained on, ill sing a sad song, draw a picture of a sad, rained on, person, and write a chapter about a rainy day. Plus, there are some things i have hundreds of drawings of, so if theres nothing inspiring me, i draw a picture of one of these themes, my two being circuses/ fun houses/ freakshows and negative emotions (anger, despondence, rejection). I hope this helps someone.

So I guess I'm a bit late but if you still need help, I would suggest (and I'm no professional or anything but this is how I personally got into art) if you have a game/show/etc. that you like, try drawing your favorite character, or whichever makes you happy to draw. Personally I got into art by drawing characters from a video game, and once I got good at drawing that single character I moved on to the next. If there's a show you like chances are that they will be human, so try drawing whatever is easiest for you. If you don't really want art as a career I'd suggest just drawing things that make you happy. I know this probably wasn't very helpful, and quite long but I hope you got something out of it.

Your video is very good, my only problem is, while watching it, I started comparing myself mentally to your work. My problem is this : I was diagnosed with severe depression back in 2008 . However, ever since the Lord, ( NOT the drugs or therapy groups ), healed me from depression, I find I can't get back into doing the healthy things I loved to do BEFORE my depression . The thorn in my side is, I still have the passion to draw and to write stories like I used to do, but I can't do it. Every time I see that paper and pencil in front of me, my mouth gets dry and my mind goes blank . Or I find myself narrating what I want to do in PAST tense, like I've already drawn it and by the end of the day, I'll wake up from the daydream and find it's already late at night and I STILL didn't draw anything ! That's the kind of annoying slump I'm in right now . I know I've said a mouth full, but any suggestions ?

Do you have a tablet? Like a drawing tablet from Wacom or Huion which you can draw on like paper? Because it's a lot easier to use those, I sucked at drawing on mobile devices but when I got a tablet it was really easy for me to adapt to drawing on it instead of paper, and I got a lot better at drawing, too. If the tablet isn't the problem, then I suggest trying to find a program that works for you and taking your time with how the brushes work and start drawing after you feel comfortable with the program.

I am a beginner right now and I've noticed that my drawings are much better (especially people drawings) if I see a drawing of said object or person than when I try to draw from real life. Should I continue doing both, drawing from drawings (like refs) and drawing from real life? Or should I just stick to drawing in real life as to not throw me off or something? I don't know how to word it correctly.

I've wondered the same thing, but I personally don't think it's wise to spend money on pro-grade art supplies to practice. Better quality supplies would improve the *value* of your art, not necessarily your *skills*. If that makes sense. I don't use markers much, I prefer pencils. Crayola is a cheap brand that's great for beginners, also Sharpies are pretty fun to use and have a wide variety of shades. It depends on what effect you want, really.

Even a lazy person can get into a routine. If you lay around and listen to music half-asleep for hours on end, pull out a notebook and doodle while you lay there. Or, if you're sitting around playing video games, take a break to draw a picture of what you did in the game. Also, don't feel pressured to draw ALL THE TIME. Only draw when there's nothing else to do. Eventually you might have to think twice about calling yourself "lazy".
