I specifically DONT let my dog off lead because of people like that - I’ve had so many dogs SPRINT at me and my dog and my pooch gets very protective and defensive when that happens, he’s such a sweetheart but a big dog so when that happens it’s ALWAYS my dogs fault?? It’s insane -.- I just don’t let him off, he has a 10ft lead we don’t pull in so he has freedom to run and fetch with us

If you don’t have total control of your dog off its leash it shouldn’t be off a leash. A lot of annoying people will train a little without a leash and think it’s fine to go without one. The leash protects the dog, the dog owner, and people and pets around the two.
@rainbowskin3379 Жыл бұрын
Unless you're hiking in places like this where it's completely remote, your dog shouldn't be off leash period.

This is terrific. I’d add in a whistle in case technology fails. I also want to say that’s exactly how I had my last dog be great on and off leash (she was a Service Dog) and also how I’m training my current dog, a Service Dog in training. You can imagine how important their training is and positive reinforcement gets such reliable results and builds such a great relationship. She loves to do her job because she loves me and she loves that I recognize her hard work. I feel so lucky to have such a great dog. 🥰

Thank you for sharing that wee bit about recall! Recall is one of the most important things to teach your dog. There's so many times when you bump into people having their dogs off leash coming running towards you and don't come when called for. I'm a dog owner myslef but I usually take loads of precaution when strangers dogs comes running. It makes me so happy to see how great of a team you and Nala is. I love seeing people working with dogs the way you do. It's so inspiring!

I'm an Alaskan with off-leash family dogs. I live outside of town and usually go hiking in remote areas where I don't see other humans. It's really nice to see other people training their dogs so well - that's exactly how I trained my dogs to stay near me and check in regularly if they want to scout ahead. I get a lot of shit from people who live in town areas for letting my dogs go off leash as soon as they see it but my dogs always come to me as soon as I ask them to no matter what. They've never harassed or hurt any human or wild life. They trust me because we're friends. Recently the area I live in has slowly started to get more townies... there's a very sad dog that lives up the road now that wears a shock collar, is ignored all day by their owners no matter how much it barks or cries, and attacks pedestrians and other dogs that walk in the public road near their property. I don't understand townies.

I have taken dogs on hikes and to play in the wild. They like to explore and it is very important to train them to stay at your side when needed and to know when they can venture ahead. The most dangerous part for them was always coming back to the vehicle where we would stop and adjust our attention about a 100 yards from the trailhead and proceed slowly with them at my side so they did not run out into a road. They learned "Stay with me" and taught the new pups when we got one.

I’m very fortunate in the fact that my dog hates being away from us for too long. He’ll dash after a fox sometimes in our forest hikes, but I don’t chase after him, and I don’t worry. I just stay in place and after a minute, I’ll call his name so he can find me more easily. He comes running back through the forest to me. Aside from that, when he go on hikes and walks on solitary paths, he likes to run up ahead and sniff around, and then turn around to make sure he can see me and waits for me to catch up!

Thankfully, I've never had to use mine, but I bought the Fido airlift pro and it gives me that piece of mind. Think about how hard it would be to carry your injured dog in your arms down a mountain or trail for many kms.
