Hi from New Zealand Thanks for your videos ,I started watching your content to service a Penn 67 which I bought new about 40 years ago. I had absolutely flogged the reel for its whole life.After servicing the reel and replacing the dog and dog spring it runs like it comes straight out of the box. I have now become a bit of a collector ,buying and servicing reels to suit every type of fishing I do over here. Thank your advise and clear instructions . Tight lines Thanks Gary

To get me through the pandemic and some medical stuff I was browsing for sites to help me understand fly reels especially older models . I would be hoping to give the fixed reels to local youngster and maybe sell on some to help buy tools etc. Your video's are absolutely outstanding and you give very clear instructions, talking through each step . Brilliant. I am following your channel and wonder if you can help with similar youtubers offering such high class vids and advice with fly reels Denis.

Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. As you have noticed, I do not do fly reels, but the process that I use and the approach to the servicing and videos would be the same. I encourage others to create their own style by taking parts of what they like and no using what does not suit them. I learned a lot on video technique by watching auto repair shows explain how they are taking something apart and detailing the problem and the solution. Someone starting in KZbin could do well by watching unrelated topics to get the presentation style that works best for them. Cooking shows anyone? Best wishes - Dennis

I inherited multiple rods and reels from my grandfather's commercial fishing equipment. I got Mitchell and thus reel as well. I have no idea what to sell them for
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 жыл бұрын
A good way to see what to sell them for is to check out the ones that are for sale on Ebay. You can get a range of prices and then you can compare condition and wear of your reels versus the others as settle on where in the price range they would fall. FYI - Dennis

I have a penn 60 i was wondering, to engage the reel you move the lever back towards you. With my penn jig master 500 its opposite you move the lever foward, away from you to engage. Is the 60 the only penn thats like that?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
I am not sure, but folks say that the engage function was moved forward to avoid accidentally knocking the lever into free spool during a fight. When the engage is to the back of the reel, it is easier to hit it forward causing the issue - Dennis

Could I use one for grouper, snapper and small sharks on a stout 6’6” rod?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
You can, but I would recommend the bigger sizes of this reel. This video is showing the Long Beach 60. Here are the best ones in that category for big Grouper and sharking - The Long Beach 66,67,68 - They are essentially the Penn Senator 4/0 without the chrome trim package. The difference between the three models is the width of the spool and line capacity. The alternative is the Penn Senator 4/0. That comes in two versions. One is low speed retrieve and the other high speed. Either is fine for what you are targeting. - Dennis

When did the Penn Long Beach 60 come out? I have no way to know how to date this thing. Thinking about selling it. I just don't know how much they fetch.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 2 жыл бұрын
The Long Beach series was one of the original reels that penn released in the early 1940s. There were changes along the way. Most of these were popular in the 1960s and 70's. There are hints to the age but it is hard to date without seeing the reel. If you send me a picture to my email 2ndchancetackle@gmail.com I will try to help narrow the range.

Yes you can, but the reel works best with 15-20 pound line based on capacity of the reel.

They are not the ideal casting reel. Try removing both side plate bearings and adding oil. That should help improve the distance. - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle

You won't find a new one in a store. That reel was discontinued in 1999. You will need to look online and in local flea markets and sales to find a good used one. - Thanks for asking - Dennis

Sorry to comment again, but I got my hands on a Penn Jigmaster 500(black sides), and I’m taking it apart to clean it and add grease after buying it. I noticed that prior to doing anything to it, the retrieve works just fine when the clicker is off, however, once I place the clicker button in the on position, when I crank it does not move the spool. Sometimes putting it in free spool and back into retrieve allows the clicker to activate while cranking but it then catches and cranks less smoothly and doesn’t move the spool again. Other than that, it has a little corrosion inside but nothing bad, the carbon drags seem pretty new. Also, I wanted to know if it is normal to have a black plastic washer or spacer beneath the main gear sitting on the anti reverse gear? The star drag was stuck tight but as I loosened the handle but it came loose like normal, so I’m not sure if the star drag’s tightness was from that extra plastic washer or from overtightening the handle nut. Sorry for the length!
@justinj5665
@justinj5665 5 жыл бұрын
In addition to this second point, I wanted to mention that the clicker tongue seems fine, so I was wondering what could cause the issue with the clicker on retrieve, as well as what could cause the tightness of the star drag
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
I will start with the last question first - yes, the hard fabric washer belongs on the gear lever under the main gear and in front of the anti-reverse dog. On the click problem, The sounds like your drag washers are not tight. Try the - with the click off, grab the spool and hold firm. If the handle is turning and the spool is not, then the drags aren't holding and you need to make sure they are in correctly. Get the schematic for the reel and match the drag parts, including the sleeve and star adjuster to make sure they are all three and in the correct order. I am leaning this way because the star adjuster should not have been "tight" as you describe it, so it sounds like something is missing there. Let me know if this helps - Dennis
@justinj5665
@justinj5665 5 жыл бұрын
2nd Chance Tackle I took it apart and cleaned all the parts, greased the AR dog, the mechanism for the free spool, main gear and took apart the drags, after putting everything together again, the reel turns even more smoothly. I put the handle back on and I believe the handle was put on too tightly or that the star drag was just stuck, but now it adjusts easily and you were right, the drag just wasn’t tight enough!
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Great. So what happened here is that you put the star adjuster on, but you did not tighten it down before installing the handle. When that happens, you put the handle on and it wedges agains the star adjuster when you tighten down the handle screw. That makes it appear that the star drag is fully adjusted, when if fact, it is not adjusted at all. Glad to hear this worked for you! Best wishes for great fishing - Dennis
