What kind of horrible nonsense is that? It doesn't want to be on a leash, you absolute moron. Forcing a cat to stay indoors is completely against their natural needs. It's like keeping an orca in a tiny tank.
@IneffablyBisexual

@@MrCmon113 i- are you an idiot? If they cat only disliked the leash he would still be trying to bolt outside without a leash?? Not all cats are outdoor cats and if you just satisfy their curiosity about what's outside they'll decide if they like it out their or not. Not to mention the inherent danger of letting a cat who didn't grow up outside go out freely where there will be feral cats he will have no clue how to defend himself against and traffic that may be a danger to him. My childhood cat got in a fight with a feral cat so bad he nearly died and had to have a leg amputated. Unless a cat has grown up an outdoor cat since they were a kitten it's better to keep them safe, and yes they can be happy, indoors.
@KattReen
@KattReen 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrCmon113 You can meet the needs of an indoor cat without having it go outside willy-nilly free range. It's a domesticated animal. Do you let your dogs out freerange too? Otherwise you're a terrible animal abuser(or just some dummy on the internet who can't follow your own logic when you've just compared a cat to a fucking whale). My cat loves sitting outside on the balcony, but doesn't particularly like going outside(even though he's an ok leash-walker) and will do the nope-flop like half the time when he sees me grabbing his harness. The reason cats are often freerange outside isn't nature or for the sake of the wellbeing of the cats, it's tradition(pest control in ye olde times) and the owner's convenience(because when it's not outside taking care of it's own needs by killing off the local bird population, damaging the ecosystem, and driving your neighbours crazy by shitting in their garden and jumping through the window and sleeping on their allergic daughter's bed, giving them a fun life-or-death situation on the way to the ER later in the evening.... You actually have to put an effort in to meet your cats needs every day, get stuff they can scratch, put a net around your balcony so they can safely chill out there etc).

@@KattReen They're not 100% domesticated... My cat goes out free-range and yes, he gets into fights but he's fine. He hates being indoors. Can't keep him inside. Cats love hunting, they love the outdoors. If your cat was always an indoor-cat, they may always love the indoors. Depends.
@asn.mkd24

@@MrCmon113 my cat used to be an indoor/outdoor cat at his free will. He is neutered so I knew he won't get into fights. Getting poisoned or being hit by a car was an everyday stress for me. He never experienced eighter, but he did kill two birds (not just random birds, he actually went into my neighbors backyard and killed two pet pigeons). So he got the "life" penalty. He was forced to become indoor only cat. Not only I sleep better now knowing he is not hurt or dead somewhere, but also every other "prey" pet is safe. I moved since and now live in an apartment with many neighbors, literal forest just steps away and a very busy road few steps in the oposite way, so no way in hell I am letting him out. We do have a balcony which we fenced extra, so he can't jump or fall, and we have mosquito nets on all of our windows. So he has a choice if he wants to stay inside and lounge by the window or wherever he wants, or to go to the balcony and sit in the sun and breeze :) Has more than enough toys for hunting too.

Hah, all of my 4 cats are formerly outdoor ferals. I could leave the doors open all day, and 3 of them would be like "nah, I've been there, done that, slept in the mud! I think I'll stay in my comfy bed and near the food." My one male will go outside.... then promptly freak out and hide. Last time he did this he was outside for 36 hours, before I could coax him back inside. Then he blamed me for all 36 hours of terror!!

About harness training: just because your cat doesn’t like the harness the first few times, don’t give up on them, as they will get used to it. It could be the type of harness too. My boy didn’t like the straps ones with multiple pressure points, but he took right away to the vest type. You and your cat will be glad you guys went through harness training!

I got a strappy one, because I read so many reviews from people, saying their cats wriggled out of the vesty ones. Anyway, he hated it the first time, but by the 3rd time, he's got it, and sat still, knowing he was going to be let outside. Problem is now, he sits by the door whining to go out and jumping up to try and do the handle (he doesn't realise it slides open. LOL).

its good to train them with special food which they only get at the training with the harness. try to train every day a little bit. put the harness on them just for a few seconds then put it away again. so they wont have any negative experience with it. it´s worth to try things for about 2 weeks and go always a little bit further in tiny tiny steps. if poeople try to rush things...people will always complain..my cat didnt like it 🙄

My new kitten was a different kind of door dasher! She would hide in the bushes next to the front door and would “dash” into the house. As we transitioned into accepting the fact that we had been “claimed” she would dutifully go outside to do her business. As soon as we got a litter box, she had very little interest in outside! She’ll sit in front of the back door staring out but when I open it she stays put, seemingly happy to just look. Occasionally she will follow us out onto the deck, but follows us back inside!

One of my cats (they passed away in 2016 and 2018) was a door dasher. I would put harnesses on them with long leashes with carabiners on the end and attach them to the (long) clothesline or several other wires we set up for this, so they could moofle around our (fenced) back yard while I was gardening. They loved it. He quit trying to door dash after that, no compressed air sprayer needed. I still have thier harnessess. It broke my heart when they passed away.

I would like to add that it you own your house, you could build an outdoor cat run that is closed off ( so the cat is protected and doesn't run off) this cat run would be connected to the house with a cat door so the cat can come in and out as he/she pleases. Now the cat can have their own personal space outside and they would be safe.

As always, great advice! Harness training has worked out great here for us. FYI, the senior cat here learned how to walk on a harness and leash at the age of 15, by watching me do it. Our 15yo girl started being interested in time outside around November last year. She was initially too shy to go beyond the front step onto the walkway around our little complex, but now she's brave enough to walk all around the walkway and partly downstairs. She has to wear her harness and lead if she wants extended down stairs time, and she took to the harness like a champ! First time on she was a bit weirded out of course, but second time once she realized it meant lots more time downstairs she was chuffing along on her harness and lead like she'd done it her whole life. Thankfully she's still shy enough that she won't go out without us and always stays within a few steps of us with or without the harness. The two times she slipped out without us (having maintenance work done) she was back at the door crying to be let back in within a minute of realizing we weren't out there with her.

I had a cat who, despite being raised as an indoor cat (from a pet store. Like many people, we were ill-informed in 1990) AND harness trained, would door-dash in an instant. She actually got out once and went missing for a week before we found her again. This was in the mid 1990's when microchipping didn't exist. She was also SUPER territorial regarding other cats. Now I have a cat who was born feral, also harness trained, also raised as an indoor cat, but her instinct is to try to get back inside the house when she gets scared, and she makes herself tiny and clings to me like a baby monkey if she's not able to get to her safe spot. Also, she IS microchiped; so as unlikely as it might be for her to run, she'll be easier to find if if she does.

My cat, a cool Platinum Burmese female, plays a "Dash for the door" game. She randomly dashes for the door but if I close the door and don't come after her she runs back to the door and cries for me to open it, which I do. When She does get out she won't go down the stairs of our apartment complex. I love my cat very much.

My kitten loves to go outdoors. She plays like crazy all day with and without us and still wants to go outside. She loves walking outside on the harness but would rather do it alone when I can't stop get from heading somewhere unsafe. Mine is a little over a year old. Door dasher for months until we started taking her outside. Unfortunately we didn't start with the leash (big mistake) and just yesterday we learned the hard way what a bad idea it was so today the harness training began. She is not happy with harness training AND not going as usual. But i guess we have to find the middle ground right? For her own safety. By the way on day two of training, she could walk in the harness if there's a treat 2 feet away. Fingers crossed.

Some cats just enjoy dashing more then other. I cat sat for a lady who had three cats. One was basically an outdoor guy who visited the house for food, the other (girl) was happy never to go further then the porch, the third (boy) was like "no thank you" when it came to going outside. He was totally happy in his house all the time. Sadly, all three of them often ganged up and bullied the dog. Had to watch during meal time because they would chase him from his food... He (the dog) was a pitbull btw. 😂 And these cats had this poor dog trained to listen to thier will.

My cat is harness trained and dashes to in front of the door for a harness to be put on. Unfortunately, she does it more often now and will sometimes meow incessantly to us to take her out given we're all stuck here. This is especially true if she notices something outside in her two "cat TV" perches. We also noticed that since we usually find bugs and whatnot for her to interact with and "hunt" she rarely engages us when we play with the stick toy anymore or even the balls she used to enjoy so much. Preferring "stalking" / hide and seek games mid-day. She does her "hunt" thing in the morning walk, chasing after stuff (human in tow), comes home, gets fed, grooms, and then naps. I wonder if I'm doing it right because since the quarantine, she's gotten more demanding. She's beside me now, excitedly waiting as I finish my coffee. She saw me get dressed for her walk. (It is her scheduled time, my alarm for that should go off in a bit.)

Here is the solution: Don't treat your cat like a dog. Let it go out by itself. It's not "demanding". You made it dependent on you.

Just a heads up with the hiss can: you’re going to scare yourself with more hisses than the cats ever will. Also, some dogs are terrified of the thing! My parents had a dog who would sit in his kennel and be a Very Good Dog if someone accidentally set one off, and it was hard to get him out the front door for walks.

Hi Jackson 👋. Our family recently moved with our two cats. We did halter training and yesterday let them off leash in the garden. It took us from March until now for us to feel ok about the cats outside again. Last night and today is the happiest our girls have been since we moved. The cats have their freedom and it is a trust excersise for both cats and us humans.

Keep a small squirt bottle with water stashed away outside your front door, safe from prying eyes and mischievous behavior. Have it in in one hand, door key in the other. A couple of little squirts will get the message across. It may save you a lot of heartache in the future.

Funny that you posted this. My door dasher snuck out a couple nights ago. I found him eventually, but it's so stressful. I'll be getting him a break away collar with bells and a tag. He's gonna hate it, but I don't care. I want him inside and safe. Just to clarify though, nothing has changed about my cats routine, he just wants outside to hunt and explore. We do playtime often, he doesn't care, his instinct to want to be outside is very strong. Can't wait to try a few of these tips though, looking forward to trying the No/Yes technique, as I do plan on getting him a harness. I'd be happy to allow him outside on my terms.

Oddly enough, I have door dashers that are terrified of outside. Luckily, my apartment door is the first of three before reaching the street. Outside of my door is a hall and the laundry for the building. I will let them wander that area while washing clothes. To get them back in, I ask who wants to go for a ride. Both dash back in. This small freedom seems to satisfy them.

I was having a lot of trouble with this as well, I felt lost and didnt know what to do. The thought of my little kitty getting out is anxious inducing That is until I figured out a trick , I was so please with myself that I went to implement it right away. The idea is based on positive reinforcement. What you have to do is, When you cats not looking sneak to the front door and open it WARING BE READY!!! At some point your cat will notice and try to run to the door, right before he's about to get outside you kick him back inside as hard as you can. The shock alone will be enough for him to run back in(my experience, yours may be different) Thats where the positive reinforcement comes in, as soon as you find the cat again you give him his favorite snack. Most ive ever had to do this was about 5 times but after that PROBLEM SOLVED WOOHOOO

Many years ago, my young cat was a door dasher. One day I was carrying in a very heavy item,, the cat rushed to beat me thorught he door, and I partly stepped on her. The cat was unhurt. My reaction cause me to put several leg muscle, break some nerves in my thigh, and leave me with a partial disability. At 74, this combines with my diabetes to leave me barely walking, and then with a cane. My point: this can get damn serious! (The cat survives still at 15 yo.)

Mine has dashed out a few times, but always with the intent of pranking me. She'd run out, but then run back in once she saw me coming for her. The worst one though was when she did it at 3AM and jumped over to the neighboring condo's front patio. I had to cross the roof over to it and quietly try to coax her off the neighbor's patio. Thankfully she dashed back all the way back into my place without me having to tresspass. I'm sure my neighbor would've understood, but it woulda been messed up being caught snooping around a single woman's porch in the middle of the night lol. As of lately, we make damn sure to monitor the door and ward her away from it when we come in.

My cat some times door dashes, but it's usually when I have been gone for a bit and I am usually bringing in groceries. I live in an apartment on the 2nd floor so she goes out sniffs then comes back. I am sort of home bound already so she's used to me being home all day since the beginning of the year. I try to feed her a little something when I eat something to ideally keep her from bagging for mine. I had to toss her cat tree and since her last one kept falling over I've gotten picky and haven't replaced it yet, but she will sit on the patio for hours often until the evening unless she wants to play or eat or use the litter box. She doesn't want to jump she just watches the wild life behind my apartment. It's funny though, last year I tried consider moving and when I was looking for a place one of big focus was my cat having a large window to look out of and preferably one with a green belt or some wild life. I did have my dinning window blinds open for her no matter how inconvenient it is for me. If I close them she claws at the blinds and pushes through them to see out.

My senior cat, now gone, went through a door-dasher phase for a year or two back when he was maybe four or five. He's been neutered long ago as a teen kitten. It was a game for him: He wanted to get out into the yard and under the porch. (I had a house back then.) I wanted him in, because the highway was one street away. Eventually, for whatever reason, he got tired of the game and stayed inside. LOL, when I moved into an apt., he only tried to get out a few times, saw lots of concrete, people, and dogs, and oh, back inside, hurry! After that, he would still want out to smell around, but I'd always bring him back in. He wasn't truly interested in staying out. Too scary for him! :D Which was fine by me. Inside was better. I miss him, he was a great, special cat.

My main tip to prevent cats from door dashing is to not open the door when they are in the area in the first place.

What about when you're coming home from work?

@@manestage5403 My house has multiple floors. My cat mostly "lives" downstairs in a finished basement. When there is no one in the house he stays downstairs. If for some reason he is on the same floor I open the door very carefully. Sometimes I keep a plastic bag. The sudden noise of the plastic nag makes him move further form the door so I can enter with no problem.

@@manestage5403 yea same here unfortunately I only have one entrance but I have been leash training him when we step outside but the issue remains that he dashes out when I get home from work or meows at the door rather frequently 😂

@@louisd95714 Oh, okay. I'll try the bag trick. I'm adopting my first kitten and I'm so afraid that he'll be running out the door the first day I come home from work.

I have catified and also cleared the top of the cabinets for them.....I also found that it was a life saver as I do have a couple door dangers to literally trained them like I did my dogs and the best commands I have ever taught is no with the tone I use and stay with a certain tone of voice (it actually works)............another thing I also did was leash train my 3 younger cats but I have also lead trained them so when I am working in the garden they can be on their little lead (I use a dog lead for toy size dogs) with their harnesses but with the lead i always make sure they are in their harnesses...........love this video lots of good info

Thankfully I am dissabled, so the cats are used to me being here. The rescue cat still isn't sure about my husband since he's been home taking care of me after e coli stay in the hospital. Hew been feeding her so has decided he isn't entirely evil. I am convinced she was abused by a man wearing big boots. When hubby walks around in his boots, she gets really freaked out and hides.
