A little off topic but you can never have too much wood. People made fun of the amount of wood i had stacked, but then with a recent knee injury i wasn't able to cut for a season. We were really glad to have the stock pile. Great job on the videos!

Couldn't agree more. I cut, split, and stacked a large maple that came down in our yard a couple years ago. We didn't even have a wood stove to burn it in, just an outdoor chiminea. People laughed at me for processing all that wood and asked "what are you going to do with all that wood?" Well we just got a wood stove installed in our home and now all that wood is perfectly seasoned and ready to burn, saving us on our oil bill. So to all those people that gave me a hard time, who's laughing now?!?! 😛

I have been heating with wood since 1974, a year after the Ice Storm hit Connecticut. I bought my Avalon Rainier about 15 years ago with both front and rear blowers. Rear is the best because the design is different, so i can run that one slower and get more heat than running the front one.plus it's much quieter. I have a typical "door fan" such as the one shown in this video. Years ago i took a typical twin-bladed window fan, drilled a couple holes thru the top tabs and through a piece of 1 1/2" square wood and mounted that in the hall going toward the bedrooms Works great to this day. I had also purchased a few years ago a "Honeywell" Air Purifier, about 14" diameter and that sits on the floor, in front of the stove, about 2 feet away but to the left of the door opening . What i discovered was that unit works just as well as a ceiling-mounted fan when it comes to heating. That unit both keeps the air clean, there is NO smell whatsoever in the house. That Filter grabs the warm air from the stove area, sends it towards the ceiling, and bounces it right to the hall that goes to the bedrooms. It can be 10-below zero, and i can keep my house about just as warm as i want ( i do have great windows also ) 75 in the living room, 72 in the kitchen and at least 70 in the rest of the house.

For our house, we use an englander add on wood furnace that taps in to our duct work. It has a blower on it that pushes air through a jacket around the fire box and then in to the duct work. Keeps the house nice and toasty. Given our homes layout there was no other good way to distribute the heat from the wood stove. Great tips Eric. I am going to have to try out the fan on the floor idea in our big open basement.

A little clarification on ceiling fan direction. From my research, forward mode is counter-clockwise as you are looking up at the fan and is for summer time. Reverse mode is clockwise direction looking up and is for winter time. I believe you stated it correctly in your video but the fan was last shown circulating in the summertime mode or forward direction. Hope this clears up any confusion. Great series Eric!

Your comments about the efficiency of standard fireplaces is true. We have a centrally located heat-a-lator fireplace to which we added ceramic glass doors a couple of years ago so now we can burn with the doors closed, acting more like a wood stove. Now it heats much more efficiently! Thanks for the video.

I took your advice and turned the fan I had blowing away from the wood stove and put it in front of the room I wanted to heat blowing towards the direction of the stove, the room is around the corner from the stove. Well in less than an hour I could already feel the difference. Now the room is nice and toasty. THANK YOU!!

Good tips. Some wood stoves are capable of running radiators. These can be expensive to install but are a really nice way to heat a home. (Our plumber makes them himself from copper pipe off-cuts and then gets them powder coated. They work well and don't cost too much.)

Thanks bud. Also add humidity into your air. You can purchase a small needle gauge sunbeam humidistat at WalMart for a few bucks. If you get your home humidity between 35-55% (the comfort zone), then the humidity will hold your heat in the air longer. I know it sounds crazy, but I tried it with my furnace here in Montana. With minimal humidity, my furnace would turn on about every 10 minutes on a 0° day with the heat set at 70. By raising my humidity to about 45-50%, my furnace would only turn on about every 30 minutes and feel warmer the whole time. I advise a tea pot on top of your wood stove... in front of your eco fan. That's what I do to have the eco fan help distribute the humidity. At the very least, it helps my wood stove heat up the house faster when we get home. Thanks for the video and stay warm this winter! Great video, thanks. Main tip from me is the upside down fire. Large logs at the base of the stove (oriented as described in line with airflow). Smaller logs on top and kindling on the very top. Add a couple of natural wood starters and some newspapers to get out going. Burns from the top down and delivers a hotter, cleaner burning fire. Uses less kindling too. Came to this method late but would never go back now.

Great tip, thanks for sharing. Our wood stove got us through a cold spell of ten days, where the temperature dipped to minus 31 (- 31). We were cozy warm in our 1,500 sq. ft. home, day and night. Nothing tastes better than the food cooked on top of it, either.

Depending on how well the duct work was ran in your house. If you have pressure and returns in all your rooms. Just run your furnace fan. It will use less energy then running a bunch of fans. Great video

I like the suggestion about the vents through the door header. I have seen open headers before too but I wonder if just the smaller vent might be a better option for traditional door/header construction. Also, I have heard of people installing a through the wall fan too. I don't care for the fans that go in the corners of the doors but a through the wall fan might be nice if its low profile and can be covered up during the summer.

I actually use ceiling fan (on low ) to move heat from ceiling outward and down hall to bedrooms. I can control the heat by turning fan off to cool down immediate area and let heat spread on its own or turn up ceiling fan higher to move heat to outlying areas faster (at the expense of a fairly warm living room). Excellent video again. I may try the fan blowing to the stove idea when that cold air hits this coming week!

The two bedrooms furthest away from the fireplace upstairs are ALWAYS cold. It’s a struggle every winter. I may try the transom vent and floor placed fan idea. Great video!

I have 12x4 vent holes cut in the floor of my upper bedrooms. Heat rises. It’s 23F degrees and it’s 68 in the farthest upper bedroom. Fan behind the stove helps push heat up the stairs as well. Heat rises. Take advantage of it.

Eric, I heat with a Lopi Republic 1750 on the groundish floor with a block chimney going through the center of the home. When we “redid” the home we opened the floor plan as much as possible, put a ceiling fan above the stove, moved the “pass through” to line up with the upstairs hallway, and lined the block chimney with drywall on 2 sides, which act as a radiator. (mind you there is a stainless liner). Now if You can help figure out how to heat the basement, I’m all ears.

Cover all return air vents in house and only. Use one for room where stove is. Key to have a oak or outside air kit for wood stove. I have 2 large box fans that blow via a pathway to behind couches to the stove for passive air movement.

A possible solution for folks heating a small workshop. I mounted a stripped out cooker extractor hood a couple of feet above the top of the stove to collect rising hot air and have a small exhaust fan and ducting to carry that air to the colder far end of the PortaCabin.

I've heard (on the internet, so who knows the validity) that the "thermal" fans that move the air once they warm up..... that they will take like 40 years to break even on cost, compared to using a small electric fan of similar size and paying the minimal associated electric bill. sounds about right blowing the cold air into the heat, cold air is heavy, warm/hot air is lighter, but blowing the cold heavy air into the heat it will become warm and travel back.

Dude those wood piles are incredible! Very awesome great tips. One criticism though with constructive intentions... here it is... Plug In Fans Instant gratification from farm living lifestyle? Such is the box fan behind the wood stove. The "behind the stove" large box fan is not made for moving air directly off of a stove and or slightly angled upward or if it tips 30° to 45° to heat a room when it can inadvertently cool the pipe and inhibit the pipe to clog from the smoke cooling down early. But yes you are scooping that air very quick. I have had customers who do this and if you are in total control hey go for it. But it uh makes me lose a little sleep worrying about a chimney fire.

Use the fan to move the cold air towards the stove - genius! We now have our Timberline stove hotter than ever and we are not roasting. We have been fighting with getting warm air down the hall to to bedrooms, keeping the stove in the good heat range, and not overheating the living room where the stove is. Bless you! We are building new construction ranch and reviewing air handler options with wood stove as primary heat source. HVAC guys want to grab the air from stove and push to outlying rooms. I have been hypothesizing returns in low corners of those rooms and ducting back to behind stove and let convection and ceiling fans draw warm air back to rooms...any thoughts? Seems to go hand in hand on your video discussion. Thanks for the great info!

I highly doubt the convection idea will be of any value. I don't believe the ceiling fan would be much value either when you have low-cornered vents. Be sure the air vents are a proper size, definitely not too small nor too large. Before i had any of that done, i would want to see if there are any tests that could be applied . Ceiling fan enough?? I doubt it Good luck

We have a cabin on the north side of a mountain with almost no insulation. Our wood stove is at the front of the house and our bedrooms and family room are in the rear corners. Until I watched this video, those back rooms were at least 10 degrees colder than the main room. We just started putting floor fans near the bedroom doors blowing outward, and now the temps in those rooms are almost the same as the main room. Thanks for the valuable lesson and inexpensive solution!!

If you have central air, just turn on the fan without the heat to circulate the air. If you don't, my HVAC guy turned me on to these things called air shares, they are relatively cheap, but you could probably make one yourself even cheaper, assuming you have access to your attic. Basically, imagine a very simple duct system with an intake you put in the ceiling of the room that's hot, and some insulated duct work in the attic running from that warm room to the cold room. In the middle of the duct run, you put a booster fan to basically suck the warm air out of the hot room and shoot it into the cold room. You run a simple switch down into the house to turn the little booster fan on and off whenever you need it. You'd be amazed how much air something like that can move in an hour. That plus a few ceiling fans on low and the whole house evens right out.

One small thing we do at the cabin. We will put bricks on the top of the wood stove. So that when it cools down at night and we are sleeping the mass of the bricks let off that stored heat. Works well for us. God Bless brother,

yankey4 I advise doing more research before you lay out the cash. I have friends with outdoor boilers and they go through TONS of wood. One says he needs 15 cords a year. You will need a very large supply of wood and lots of time processing it. They are very inefficient, imo.

Wood stove on UPPER storey of well-insulated house in New Zealand. Creates high temperature above stove, but skillion roof with no "attic" space. We have a duct installed in a cupboard directly behind the stove and can assist air flow with a fan. Other than a ceiling fan to blow COLD air down the stairwell to the lower floor, any tips on fans and ducting systems to get WARMTH DOWNWARDS? Any tips on installing an air return (or not) when we get a wood burning insert installed? Will a cold air return help by eliminating negative air pressure in house that then pulls in cold air from the outside. Or, with an insert, is that unnecessary because of how little air it draws?

Great video, I’ve been binge watching your wood burning series and you’ve earned a subscriber. I have a question rooted in my family’s desire to eventually move out of the city and into the country, so I’m thinking about design very early on. 1) I like the look of a wood burning stove as much as the usefulness of heating with wood vs gas or electricity, but understand it can be challenging to heat the whole house from one stove. Are there safe and reliable ways to use the nice looking stove that’s centrally located, yet also use that stove to heat a circulated water system that is in the floors of the more distant rooms? Or would I have to have to have a separate wood fired furnace elsewhere to serve that purpose?

That's what I'm planning on doing, taking heat from the smokestack by wrapping a copper coil around ( it's better to take it from the smoke stack bc that's waste heat too. Also incorporating a magic heat blower (they go in the smokestack and blow out heat that would otherwise go up chimney (boosting 30% heat). I plan on plumbing a hot water tank with the copper coil to heat it (thermosiphon), and also do a radiant loop (under wood floors) or into radiators

As a builing designer I would recommend focusing on site orientation to get solar assistance and northern protection relative to window placement and sizing and a carefully detailed and robust air barrier and insulation program which will lessen the demand on the stove and give you more freedom with regard to placement. I am not using my furnace bc it eats propane however I'm using my wood stove that's in master bedroom. I am trying to get the heat from the room to the hallway and other places of the house. I have very tall ceilings which makes it difficult. I have living ceiling fan on counter clockwise and the bedroom ceiling fan counter clockwise. I do have a floor fan as you suggested blowing at the wood stove. I opened all the furnace vents in the house but left floor vents closed. Anything else you suggest?

we bought a vogelzang that heats 3200 square feet. It has firebrick lining and draft controls. It holds 40 pounds of wood. We turn our 6 foot ceiling fan on lowest setting and it heats the entire house. Our winter monthly electric bill is about 68.00 per month. The stove also came with a variable speed blower. Makes winter so much nicer. You can set the draft controls and forget about it for about 8-9 hours.

I bought an eco fan years ago and I'll be honest I can fart and move more air than they do.

I like my Eco fan because it's so quiet and does help move the heated air on down to the other end of the house. I have an electric fan attached to the wood stove which moves more air but it annoyingly noisy.

My father used to close the vents of unused rooms. However, when I purchased my home and had an HVAC guy come, he practically scolded me and said he was not a good idea to ever close the vents. To me, it makes sense to close them. does anyone else have any experience of being told to keep all the vents open or is it more practical to close them?

All you need to do is remember the basic physics of convention, (hot air rises and cold air falls). Just place your fans to enhance this natural convection rather than oppose it.

Hot air does not always raise. You have to consider pressure and your control volume.

I would love too have a wood stove for extra haet however looks like I'm going to call my insurance comany too find out if we would be coverd incase of a fire.
