When my skin is irritated, it usually just wants to be left alone. Fewer products and less fussing. Even if several layers of a soothing toner sounds good, my skin bristles when I do that. I have to remind myself that the answer to every skin issue isn’t always skincare-sometimes it’s just giving my skin a chance to do its own thing. I still wear sunscreen, so I have to cleanse and moisturize in the evening, and I usually use a moisturizer in the morning too, but when my skin is at its worst, that is the maximum for me.

I find the same thing. Skincare is often the problem when my skin is sensitized and even hydration & moisturizers aren’t the answer until some of the irritation has calmed down. I use Neutrogena ultra gentle hydrating cleanser and Vanicream lotion and try to avoid situations that I need a sunscreen (hats and visors are my friends, even if they look ridiculous)

I just consulted a dermatologist after having a severe bout of skin irritation (following an application of tea tree cream) and her advice is actually just like what you just said, which is to gently wash with gentle cleanser and stop all skincare products for a while (she also prescribed a very simple, very affordable anti-inflammation cream to be applied thinly on the affected areas). She advised that even moisturizing can be too suffocating/occlusive for the skin when it is inflamed, so better step back and give your skin time to heal itself (to provide context, my skin is really tender, red, and hot to touch atm).

Hi Kelly as someone with rosacea, eczema and hyper sensitive skin I often have irritation, redness and sore/stinging skin. I do use quite a few of the products mentioned including the Niod MG, Bioderma sensibio misceller water, LRP cicaplast (baby version), Avene cicalfate, Laneige cream skin refiner and the Benton sheet mask. My favourite milk/cream cleanser is the Avene antirougours refreshing cleansing milk - works really well and takes all makeup and spf off in a single step, without any detriment to already sore skin. This is the one I use during a bad rosacea flare when everything else burns/stings. I also like the cosrx cica toner for soothing hydration. The Aveeno calm and restore oat serum is a great affordable and really gentle option that's very soothing and hydrating. My other sheet mask of choice is the dear, Klairs soothing sheet mask - it's more moisturising than the Benton version and soothes in a different way. The Benton takes down redness and is hydrating, but doesn't have the moisture of the Klairs version. Depending on how my skin feels is how I decide which to use. I also like either the LRP or Avene mineral water in a can for cooling the skin down, but the Caudalie version has the added benefits of the grape and is also a much loved option. If the irritation is incredibly dry then the paula's choice clinical ultra rich moisturiser is amazing and with a layer of an ointment over the top overnight is the most moisturising thing I have found. Spf is a nightmare during a flare of rosacea and my top pick when everything burns/stings is the paula's choice calm mineral spf30 - it is the only one I have found I can use when my skin is so inflamed. Best wishes.

I’m also a fan of the Paula’s Choice mineral sunscreens. For every day, I try to use less expensive products so I’m not tempted to minimize the amount I use. But when my skin is sensitized I try to use as few products as possible and go back to Paula’s Choice when I need sunscreen.

@@netlane100 Hi Inga my routine does change up a little every so often, but at the moment it is as follows: Morning Bioderma sensibio misceller water as a cleanser and splashed off LRP mineral water in a can Cosrx cica toner - 2 to 3 layers Laneige cream skin refiner Niod modulating glucosides Aveeno calm and restore serum A few drops of oil - either the Indeed squalane or the Elf oil blend Paula's choice clinical ultra rich cream Avene mineral spf50 untinted I use everything face, neck and chest Evening bioderma misceller water to remove eye makeup Avene Xeracalm face and body oil cleanser to remove makeup and spf LRP mineral water in a can Cosrx cica toner - 2 to 3 layers Laneige cream skin refiner Aveeno calm and restore Either my prescription azelaic acid 15% or the Geek and Gorgeous retinaldehyde as my active that night Either the Benton fermentation eye cream or the Avene physiolift retinaldehyde eye cream - the retinoids are used together LRP Lipikar baby AP+M as an all over moisturiser on face, neck and chest This is when my skin is relatively calm. If I'm in a flare it is all about simplicity and calming the skin. No actives and minimal products. The antirougours refreshing cleanser as a single step cleanser, the Benton mask and then a moisturiser and spf during the day, or a double layer of moisturiser at night. I hope that helps.

Applying wash-off masks before the shower is absolutely one of the best things I've learned from you. I enjoyed them but many of them were such a hassle to wash off, so I rarely finished them up - but now I love using them! Many of my holy grail products for irratation are already in the video but another one is and will forever be the Missha Artemisia Treatment Essence. When my skin can't handle *anything*, I will give it a few layers of the essence and it gives me immediate relief. Not gonna lie, though, that decor item on the right at the edge of your desk made me a bit nervous the entire time hahaha.

I’ve been using Pycnogenol on my skin for decades. Derma e used to have a great line of Pycnogenol products that were excellent for calming my uber sensitive skin. Sadly, they dropped my favorite products and reformulated the ones they kept. I don’t recommend the line as it is now. Today, I mix one drop of The Ordinary Pycnogenol serum with a dollop of The Inkey List Q10 serum and one pump of the Pacifica Beauty Vegan Ceramide serum. I apply the mixture before my moisturizing sunscreen, and am very pleased with the results. My skin is calm and happy. I’ve tried so many skincare products to try to calm my skin when it’s upset that I’ve wasted a lot of money on things that don’t work. So far, what is the most effective for me is the Beauty of Joeson Calming Serum. For cleansing, I like the La Roche-Posay Hydrating Cleanser, the Pacifica Beauty Vegan Ceramide Cleanser, and the Ceramedx Extra Gentle Body Cleanser. To remove makeup and/or water resistant sunscreen, I use either The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser or organic coconut oil. I’m glad that my skin likes coconut oil. It’s an inexpensive makeup remover that beats any balm or oil product I’ve tried. But the squalane cleanser is very effective and gentle, too, and it can be used as a second cleanse unlike coconut oil (for my skin). I recently purchased the Kombucha essence on your suggestion. I’m looking forward to trying it. I have the LRP Cicaplast cream. It helps when my skin is angry, but it’s not moisturizing enough on its own for me. Even though it’s somewhat occlusive, I use shea butter on top, which seems to work well.

@@sirtsupirtsu Oh how I wish that was an option for me but unfortunately I work two jobs and both of them require me to be in my car driving all day which unfortunately puts me right in the path of the sun lol. I have taken my skin care down to just washing my face with water and a very small amount of the LaRoche Posey toleraine cleanser & the Cicaplast baume b5 cream which has helped but I’m peeling now so I found that the LaRoche posey spf Is a good one for me to use because in the grand scheme of things it does not cause anywhere near the amount of burn an irritation that all of my other ones do right now

Try Stratia Liquid Gold and/or Krave Great Barrier Relief. The Liquid Gold saved my skin, but since it has a noticeable yellow tint, its best to use it at bedtime. The Great Barrier Relief doesn't work quite as well, but it's better suited to daytime use, because it has a slight green tint that helps conceal redness during daytime.
