Thanks, Leonardo. I have drawn since childhood but always had a death grip on the pencil. Around 2010 I learned to use the underhand grip and it kind of freed my strokes, though it took several years to somewhat master it, it feels natural now.

I'm glad to know that John, and congrats! The change of grip sometimes isn't easy.

Self taught artist meaning someone who hasn't looked at other artists before or learn from KZbin or even learn the fundamentals and no art is not fully a talent but more like a skill hope this demonstrates more.

Oh wow, I never even considered holding the pencil differently. I mostly draw on smaller spaces anyway, but I'll try to remember this when an opportunity comes up. Thanks!

Thank you for this video! I just started drawing for the first time last week. I'm 45yrs old and I was struggling with the best way to hold my pencil from different angles and directions. Not knowing, but I found myself using the grips in your video. Right now I'm filling up pages in my sketch book with basic shapes and lines of various sizes. Do you have any videos on beginner exercises? Thanks again and great video! Bless you!

Yeah, I tried using different grip. Some felt unnatural, but I'll be practicing by holding my pencil in those grips until it becomes natural to me. Drawing some line strokes becomes incredibly easier by just holding the pencil differently, I realized that after trying your tips. Thank you, man!

Drawing this way is very helpful for getting gesture and loosening up, I've been doing it for about a year now and (although awkward at first) it is now my preferred way of drawing. I like to use Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils to sketch with, (normally dark shades so I can get a fuller value scale from light to dark). They also have a very thick "lead" so they work beautifully when sharpened to a long point. :)
