Hi Louis. I am Rev. Dale Swofford. My first real boat was a 26' L 16. I bought her when she was on the bottom, under 30 feet of water in Bermuda, while I was in the US Navy.That just shows you I am a little crazy. I rebuilt her to her original lines, and she won every class race for the next 3 years. while in Bermuda, I was even able to sail "Mistral" back to the states. I fell in love with Capt. Nat Herreshoff's designs on that trip. I was raised in the mountains of NC, with a furniture builder great grandfather who never owned a power tool. i guess a little of his knowledge wore off on me, but not near enough. so much of the old woodworking knowledge is being lost. I have been watching your videos for the past 6 months, and i really enjoy them, particularly the 12 1/2. Now at 62, I am in the process of building a large boathouse, in order to teach young adults and kids how to build small boats. we will be building cedar strip Melonseeds 17's, and Prospector canoes 17's. between teaching classes, I am going to build my retirement boat. I am going to build Capt. Nat's Alerion 26 daysailer. Any advice from you would be very welcomed. Where are you located? Your accent is sounds coastal NC or VA. Perhaps when "Gandoff" is ready for the water, we can come visit. Until then. keep on teaching. Dale

I've helped my uncle with a couple of his spiral staircases and he has over-bent his stringers during the lamination process because they have a tendency to relax a little and inevitably have a better fit. But it looks like these held the overbend stress for their entire span of service. Thank you for making videos. This channel is a treasure trove.

An Old Town wood-canvas yacht tender? I never heard of such a thing. But I grew up knowing, which is different than grew-up with, the brothers Steve and John [and there was a younger brother Ted?]] Kilbridge who ran the Temagami Canoe Company, one of the last Canadien makers of wood-canvas canoes. It's been decades, but I think they are still one of the two oldest canoe makers in Canada. To my point, yes, this was exactly the way they steam bent all of the frames and ribs for their traditional canoes. If we smashed a canoe on the rocks in the rapids of the East Main [before it was diverted for Quebec Hydro] we would have to replace that piece on the banks of the river from what ever tree was standing around. Even in the 1970's, there was no rescue except 'self-rescue.'

The King of Klamps!

Overbent so they would have an easier time of clamping it. If it was overbent in the other direction it would be even harder to clamp. Done this myself as I often work alone and have few hands to help me.

Sound is on the left channel only, but quite adequate.

perhaps they overbent because they may have thought that it could spring back a bit and hopefully to the anticipated actually curve.?

There's a lot of 'art' and geometry in boat building and I would have loved knowing how to build this craft, but too old now! ....13

Slightly louder, but far too long after this video to go back and fix it, I'm sure.

But why did they overbend it!? Seeing as how no one has received a response since this was posted, my question will probably dissolve into the KZbin void. :(
@TipsfromaShipwrightvideos8 жыл бұрын
They most likely over bent the stem because it's much easier to straighten it out when installing than having to bend it more. It just makes things easier.

Thank you! And thank you for taking the time to respond. My family and I are big fans of your KZbin channel. Please keep em coming!

Man, that boat is sick! More than 50% is rotten. Buy another one.
