After 27k miles I finally got to replace the dreadful OEM tires on our 2019 Ford Ranger! I took the opportunity to do a little test and review between the original equipment Hankook Dynapro and their replacements, Cooper Discoverer ATP II. In terms of looks and off-road performance the Cooper is a big upgrade of course - but what about on-road manners?

Nice too see a review of these tires. I put them on my F150 about 1.5 months ago. I haven’t put them to the test yet but nice too see them in action.

Glad it was informative for you! We got to try them in some snow and ice yesterday, they did pretty well but they're certainly not snow tires, per se.

@@LackeysBeTrippin ROB thank you for sharing this video I stumbled upon your review while googling the Cooper Discoverer ATP II in which I’m leaning towards for my 2007 f 150 xlt 4x4 crew cab with standard lift size 275 65 18 116t these will be replacing my previous tires which were purchased in December 2016 at my local DISCOUNT TIRE. at that time I purchased the BRIDGESTONE DUELER LTH all season tires. I was wanting to stay with the same tires as were on when new in 2007 the BFG RUGGED TRAIL but they were discontinued by 2016. So I opted for the duelers with a 70k tread life from DISCOUNT. I’ve actually been happy with them over these past 6 years but at 62k on them they’re starting to get the cracks between the treads. I’ve rotated them as recommended and I’ve had good luck otherwise. Since I live in Chicago and we have all 4 seasons I’m seriously thinking about the COOPERS from DISCOUNT because I’ve always had GREAT EXPERIENCES with their store. Also the DUELER LTH has been discontinued. The COOPER ATP II is actually selling right now for $220 per tire and I like the tread style. We mainly drive around town and highway and really don’t carry a lot of weight in our F 150 so I think I’m going to be getting these this weekend. Your video has made me feel confident in this decision I will let you know how they work out. And again I really recommend DISCOUNT TIRE I WILL ALSO BE CHECKING THE TIRE MFG DATE ON SIDE WALL BRFORE THEY MOUNT THEM! A lot of people don’t know about this. A lot have bought new old stock before and never knew this they don’t know how to read the number after the DOT numbers. Thanks Again Rob!!

I've run 4 sets of coopers, i normally get new tires every other year and sell the used ones. At3, At3, AtP, and master craft ATX. All got great traction looked great... At first. Every single one wore funny, cupped, and just sucked after a year. I used to make excuses, but now I'm in the "never cooper again" club. And this was on 3 different vehicles.

Great vid brother; truly appreciate that. I tell ya, ever since 3yrs ago I tried out the 1st Gen Discoverer ATP’s on my ‘12 GMC Sierra 5.3L, I knew from that moment on I’d be a loyal fan. Excellent tires. Now, just 2 days ago, I decided to make a change of trucks. Always been a loyal GM guy & since I’m bout to retire from active duty May of next year, I decided it was time to part with my Sierra after 185K miles. I’d figured if I waited too long, it’s value would just drop dramatically. So, sold it to a dealership for daggone near what I desired & low n’ behold, I bought a ‘19 Chevy Colorado ZR2 with very low miles. I don’t need a full size anymore & this ZR2 with both front/back locking diffs fits my fancy just right. Stock GY Duratracs are still in great shape & nowhere near to bein’ too worn yet. But, started researchin’ Discount Tire for the ATP’s like I had on my Sierra. Then noticed this Gen 2 version. Went here on YT & ur vid was the 1st to pop up! & I’m like you brother. Child of the late 70’s thru the 80’s & always believed white letters outboard would make any vehicle ‘pop’. & the fact that these Gen 2’s are bold-lettered now makes it all the more satisfying! God’s Blessings my friend

The small sippes are to allow the tire blocks to flex on wet or icy surfaces. The large channels are to direct water from under the contact point of the tire.

They look awesome! I want to get some, not a need, but I kinda wanna wait until Black Friday. My tires will probably last until then. The selfish part of me wants then right this minute, but it might be worth it money wise to wait.

A few things in my opinion: The Cooper looks a lot better, even if they were the same size, which I know they are bigger. The size alone probably made a difference in some of your testing as the Ranger doesn't articulate well ( I know I owned one ) due to the parabolic leaf set up, so the taller tire would have more traction. The side lugs surely helped too. I am leaning towards the Cooper ATP II for my next tire on my current truck. Either way, they Coopers look great on your Ranger, especially in that size! I had Grabber ATX on my Ranger and really liked them. Thanks for the review.

To start with, I'm glad to see that you did an actual test as opposed to those that just stand in the driveway pointing the camera at the tires giving their opinion. Second, I don't know your amount of experience off road so I don't mean to assume but you mentioned a few times letting traction control to do its thing. I will tell you this. I highly recommend turning the traction control off anytime you are off road. As everyone knows it electronically distributes power to the wheels as the computer sees fit but the computer can't see the terrain. They do very good on pavement but in dirt, rock or mud they are a pain and can get you stuck. Momentum off road is key in a lot of situations. The new tires look great though. Do you still like them? I am considering buying a set of Cooper's.

Hey David! Thanks for the comment! I haven't done much off roading at all (just a couple easy trails), but you're right I hadn't thought about turning the TC off. Good call. To answer your question as to whether I still like them, I just did the first rotate couple weeks ago and they looked great aside from some slight inner edge feathering. It's not enough to cause much noise but if I listen for it I can hear it. They seem to do great in the rain and slick grass but I haven't had time to get them out on any real off road situations yet. We're now traveling up the east coast then over to Washington state, so I'm hopeful I can find something in the smokies or out west so I can do an off road review.

I've had these on my Nissan Titan for almost a year now. The good: better handling, braking and acceleration than the Goodyear sra. VERY good in snow. In fact in a couple of storms I didn't need 4 wheel drive. Good wet grip. The bad: they don't have the best highway ride. There's some vibration and the mpg went down. Also after a year they now have a little bit of a howl at 30 mph+. It's not annoying though. These things are to be expected with a more aggressive tire. One thing you will want to look at however is balancing. One of my tires took almost 10 oz of weight to balance I returned it for a new one. The new one only took 1 oz of balance as did one of the other tires the other two took about 4 oz. Just be aware that some of the Cooper mud terrains and all terrains sometimes take a lot of weight to balance which can contribute to highway vibration. Overall however I like the tires particularly the snow performance which is important for me.

That's great feedback and I agree! In fact I'm about to do a follow-up review on these. I'm still quite happy but I am getting some very slight chopping on the inner tread blocks which is causing some whining noise. That's more the fault of the truck and me waiting too long to rotate them than it is a knock on the tires!
