Only thing I want: Evil. Protagonist. I don’t mean Mapleshade, I mean a cat who calculates plans, one that looks at other cats and their perspectives on other clans for reference. One that carefully plans out what’s going on without spending all their time on it. Make them have allies and enemies. Make blackmail and manipulation a thing. The only apprentices I think worked were Firepaw and Jaypaw. Firepaw, cause like you said, we got to learn about the world and people and life around him. Jaypaw because we got to see his journey from a little apprentice who hated everyone around him, to a skilled and strong medicine cat. But that’s basically it for me. Another reason why Gray Wing is great!

This is why i loved Tallstar's Revenge. You learn about Windclan culture, why they are unique from the other clans, and you even learn about Tunnelers and Moor Runners, this was an interesting introduction to Windclan, it was great. Especially how Shrewpaw and Barkpaw had actual personality and not just "Oh, I have to check fleas, wow so terrible." You had a different perspective to apprenticeship, and the mistakes Tallpaw had made as an apprentice. Infact, Honeypaw had more personality than Lionpaw did, she was always fangirling over Berrynose, her death was heartbreaking because her personality made me grow attached to her more than I did Lionblaze.

The group of cats in Tallstar’s generation are great. Barkface is caring, smart. And a good character. Shrewclaw is a brat, mean, and literally the bane of my existance. And Tallstar is WONDERFUL. His story and emotions feel real to me. (It was one of the few books/character arcs i’ve cried over!) WindClan was unique. They just aren’t anymore. We hear nothing about their culture. Such as the point about being special because they’re the closest to their ancestors, and closest to the moon stone. Each clan has a reason for feeling the most important. (Besides ThunderClan, ThunderClan just likes ThunderClan) And this reason for WindClan is fantastic! It’s a shame they were reduced to angry border obsessed freaks. Tallpaw’s arc is very personal to me. The book gives us so much detail about clan culture. The way they walk, act. It’s given so much more detail. Tallstar’s revenge is one of the best super editions, in my opinion. It’s character drama is more than just “i want this position!” And “i like this cat that i’m not allowed to date” and “trouble with StarClan!” It’s more about the emotions and struggles Tallstar faces within his own clan. He feels trapped, held down, ignored, unloved. He doesn’t deal with prophecies or secret training or forbidden love. His story is about understanding himself, and the world around him. Tallpaw’s issues with belonging are different from so many other cats. He feels stupid, he feels like he’s letting his family down, he feels like nobody else cares about the things he does. It sucks that newer books shy away from character personality in favor of the plot. If you told me what two modern characters were like that were both protagonists and asked me who they were, i couldn’t tell.

I think the training aspect is why we have so many background characters with absolutely nothing differentiateing them other than name. If they just spent some time getting to know different cats in the clan, maybe just grooming or chatting, then the clan would feel more lively with gossip and distinct personalities.

I agree. I think the other clans should have different type of training too. Maybe windclan revives tunneling and use it during attacks, or Riverclan learns attacks with swimming, maybe Shadowclan learns different techniques to hunting. Very sly and slow

plot idea: a youngish riverclan warrior that WANTS to become a medicine cat and so they start training for that. it's a bit more difficult since they started training later in life than usual, and they find having a mentor embarrassing at this age (20something equivalent), but they deal, although it doesn't make them popular in the clan. they resent how their mentor treats them like an apprentice. the nitty-gritty of healing is used as an avenue to worldbuild healing methods (and tangents on their differences between clans, and what ingredients are native to which territory.) the warrior has no desire to leave their work as a medicine cat, and nothing is trying to stop them from continuing it either. they stay in the medicine den for most of the book (aside from a subplot about collecting ingredients because of a shortage, where the protagonist has to rush on a time limit to get the correct medicines before a critically injured patient dies without them) and learn about the events of the story from the patients that pass through for healing. injuries get progressively more dire. our protagonist begins to question why. their overprotective mentor refuses to tell them, as the mentor sees them like a kid, and wants to shelter them. they're unpopular enough in the clan that none of the warriors want to tell them either. so they try to find out the mystery themself using brief snippets of communication with a group of starclan cats as clues. the starclan cats are outright portrayed as @holes for this, as these particular ones are just toying with our protagonist, who gets into several arguments with them about it haha. eventually thunderclan attacks riverclan (yes thunderclan is the villain this time). the protagonist finds out that, just as they feared, there had been increasingly large skirmishes with thunderclan, and this was the breaking point. riverclan cats, including the protag, and several very young apprentices (sent out by shady mentors), had been intruding on thunderclan territory to steal herbs out of necessity. and thunderclan, although they had no shortage, refused to remember that sharing is caring, and got mad. protagonist and their mentor have to hold back a few particularly ruthless thunderclan warriors as the warriors try to break into the medicine den where injured patients lie.

I think the thing that most frustrates me about the lack of cultural differences between the clans is that the books set up a ton of tiny things that COULD be interesting cultural distinctions, but then they just don't do anything with it. Like riverclan decorating their nests. Do they give gifts of shiny rocks or pretty flowers to their friends? Do they have favorite shells or feathers? Did some of the cats who made the Great Journey bring their favorite decorations along? Do they pass down decorations, what happens to a cat's nest decorations when they die? Do riverclan apprentices sometimes bring their favorite things to gatherings to show off to the apprentices in other clans, and how do those cats react? And they've had so many opportunities to highlight the differences. We've had several characters have to stay for one or more nights in another clan, cats switch clans, and the Great Journey itself.

They had that in the earlier books, along with at least suggestions of a more fleshed out culture, I guess it's just one of those things that you have to actively keep track of as an author and that thus tends to fall by the wayside. Okay, not full-on cliques, honestly the number of apprentices usually seems to small for that, but the main three definitely had a different relationship with each other than with the other two apprentices, who were fairly close to each other. It was like two small-ish friendgroups that were sort-of friends with each other, but more the kind of friend you'd see in school because you happen to be in the same class than someone you'd actively hand out with.

Absolutely! (Warning: DOTC spoilers ahead). I think that’s why I enjoyed reading about Gray Wing so much. He started out as a fully grown cat and had a few leadership opportunities throughout his lifetime, but never quite made it to true leader status. He was a very loyal and genuine cat and I thought experiencing his POV during his own death was unexpectedly great to read about since we don’t have unique perspectives like that very often in Warrior cats.

Dawn of the Clans made me step back and appreciate the different culture aspects of each clan. Clans were formed according to the natural skill and abilities of each cat, their own personal sense of home and where they fit in best. It made me want more of this being shown. the tunnelers of Windclan and Shadowclan cats training in camp were also great little culture differences that I wish were shown more often. I want a arc that's geared towards drama in the clans themselves, cat politics, culture clashes, a clan cat bouncing between all the clans to try to find where they fit in like Dawn of the Clans. More cat interacting with each other and developing friendships and rivalries. Less outward troubles and more inward and relationship based troubles.

Yes, that's exacly what I'm appreciating so much about dawn of the clans right now, as I'm reading it again. No super strict rules, the groups of cats are fluid and keep changing. I especially like the fact that they are cats who already lived there before, and now have to deal with the consequences of the arrival of the tribe, by either joining them, avoiding them or competing with them.

What bothers me is that it’s always the same three cats recently. You have the medicine cat who worries about stuff The generic cat who becomes a good fighter and Hunter And the cat who always gets in forbidden love. Why can’t the authors change it up a bit? I feel I like the only exception that I can think of (up to now) is Jayfeather. He wasn’t worried about shit other than a split second before his sister died. He was just grumpy and honestly had the most hormonal teenageresque personality ever. I also miss when apprentices as a part of their training went to the moon stone to talk to their ancestors or lost loved ones, I felt that was something really cool to add like when shrewpaw got talk to his mom who died a few moons earlier and he got some closure for it or when crookedpaw went and instead of starclan he talked to mapleshade. we need a character thats as willing as us to rip apart the warrior code, examine every little detail of it, and question it. not just "maybe dating outside my clan isnt terrible" but ALL of it. it feels like even clan cats have no understanding of the code, they just learn it and follow it and are just fine with that. also the medicine cat code has never been written down anywhere, as far as we can tell its just dont date and you can wander where you like. it made sense not to know about it before getting medicine cat protags but weve had medicine cat protags since arc 2 whats going on

Oh my god YES! Every time a cat goes hunting, my eyes just gloss over and I speed through the scene. And the clans really have no culture to separate themselves at all. Knowing that WindClan used to tunnel kinda makes it worse because it was present only in Tallstar's Revenge and stopped in the same book. And ShadowClan is just a slightly more rude ThunderClan. I hope they also remember that RiverClan doesn't make just dens based on your rank but smaller dens for couples that float on water. I really liked the idea introduced in Crookedstar's Promise that they sometimes make smaller dens, like a family home! It's cute!

Honestly kind of upset that the moor runners and tunneler divisions in windclan were phased out. It created a lot of unique conflict and scenery in Tallstar's revenge in my opinion, and it differentiated Windclan's culture from other clans. A tunneler who actually enjoyed their job would be a cool and immersive perspective to take.

A kittypet perspective would be different and interesting, not a kittypet who becomes a warrior (I’m looking at you firestar) but a kittypet that roams around and learns instead of joining, though I’m not sure of how plot-wise this could go it would be a refreshing new concept

this could be so cool?? like, a kittypet has a friend in the clans (e.g. a fellow kittypet that left, or even a clanborn cat that they managed to make friends with), and when some sort of outside force (a group of rogues or twoleg shenanigans) threatens the clans, the kittypet must decide whether to hide and potentially let the clans fall apart or come out of their twoleg den to save their friend. there could even be a cool scene at the end where the leader of the friend's clan is like "DAMN you are a good warrior, join us please?" and the kittypet is like "nah i'm good, seeya later" and goes back home

Ok, but I don't think any clan-born cat would have a Rusty type introduction, to be fair. They lived in their respective Clan for 6 months leading up to this, they're likely to already picked up on so much culture and who the cats are around them already, especially given how tight-knit the Clans as a unit are. But that still could be such an interesting starting point; these characters already know a lot, and can info-dump to the readers if needed (preferably with interesting dialogue or a unique scene, not just thinking in a long list from their pov). But it also shines super well when you get to the other Clans or outsiders in general, because they not only have info on Clan life, but preconceived biases passed down to them from older warriors. So they might be a source of information to the reader about the generalities of the world and how it works, but you can still learn new things from their perspective about the other Clans while they tackle with the stereotypes they grew up with being disproven.

Right? Sometimes it'd be cool to have a start other than an apprentice. As the series kept going on, the less interesting the apprentices got, up to a point they were hardly interesting enough to even read the books. A little bit of change would be awesome and refreshen the series a bit!

I get that they probably don't wanna explain the whole clan system every new book and kits probably know a lot about it, but I wish at the start of each apprentice protag's book they would get to know the cats in their clan and think to themselves about those cats and their personalities. It'd be nice if background characters weren't so neutral. They don't need to be super in depth or anything, just have basic traits so that the protag can think about them "She never sits still. I wish I was that energetic." or "Why does he always seem to be in a bad mood?"

I LOVE APPRENTICE DRAMA! Stuff like, "Good day outside, Applepaw!" "Oh just like you to say that Archpaw" Like, where did that come from!? Or, crushing...or something. IDK. It's look School Drama, it's intense. I want bullies, mean girls, hot girls, kids with anger issues, annoying teachers. ALL OF THAT.

Idea: an arc where the main protagonists are like, a Queen with apprentice kittens, an elder, a young warrior that isn’t special in any way: no evil parents, no Famous and Perfect parents, not half clan, just a random warrior. Preferably none of these cats are in thunderclan. Two of them could be in the same clan but not having talked too much. Then there’s a prophecy about something, and obviously they think “well I’m not special so I won’t be affected” well they were WRONG! Also have them build strong friendships and have character development and angst and comfort

you HAVE to read solacefruit's warrior fics on AO3. He brings much-needed worldbuilding, texture, nuances, character depth and clan culture into the warriors world with so much elegance and beautiful prose... I think you'll enjoy how he interprets the world. I love the fandom but the source material is so aggravating and painful sometimes, like you've highlighted in this video

You mentioned how full a Warrior Cat's day is, and this is something I think about a lot, but like... Their territories, being mostly completely separate environs from one another, have to be *huge*. And these are cats! No matter how fast a cat *can* run or sprint, that's not something they're capable of maintaining for extended periods! It has to take them *forever* to patrol these territories, let alone multiple times a day!

Indeed! Cats&their family can usually patrol their whole territory, but only because they're living alone. To support upwards of 50 cats, you'd need something enormous.

One thing I've always really cared about that the books themselves don't care about is seeing a character's experience as a mentor. Firestar's experience in mentoring Cinderpelt, Cloudtail, and Bramblestar was all very interesting to me. It was fun to see him grow and learn and bond with his apprentices, especially when it came to Cinderpelt. I hate how the newer books kind of gloss over it. Like, Lionblaze mentoring Dovewing could've been a cool way to watch him grow and learn, but all of their interactions were about the Dark Forest or Beavers or some other drama.

My thought has always been, there's not enough being taught to the apprentices. They don't respect starclan, they aren't taught to be independent or how to lead. I like the ideas coming from fanfictions, shadowclan having a buddy system because they are considered evil. Every warrior has a buddy that they hunt and fight with. More emphasis on thundercats climbing trees. Riverclan was once known for finding pretty stuff and decorating their nests. What happened to that? Windclan should still teach tunnel safety and how to move in them. Skyclan was known for their jumping ability but like... How often is that show now?

I started warriors in omen of stars, and I completely didn’t understand, over reading omen of the stars, I started to understand, but I though was confused on everything that happened. I thought that everything in this arc was UnIQue but over the course of reading the OTHER arcs I began to understand ‘hey, these apprentices are quite similar’. I didn’t really have a problem with it, I still don’t. But in each arc, it bothers me how it always, ALWAYS starts the same way. I know sometimes It doesn’t, but in the more recent arcs, it does. It always starts with a ‘Alright RootKit! Remember NeedleKit? The supportive generic sister character? You and her are becoming apprentices! But your fur is so messy!’ It bothers me when there are so many other possibilities. For example, the Erins could write that’s scene in a way where maybe the kit’s mother doesn’t care about the kit becoming an apprentice at all, making an interesting way of seeing the character’s life, and seeing how the character interacts with other main figures in their life, it would be interesting, or maybe a story can start off where a kit wakes up in a forest with a bunch of cats near them, giving the impression the kit was abandoned. Or maybe a six moon old kit dropped off at camp with a mother begging to make them a warrior. That’s just my ideas though,

I'd like a new series to introduce us to the Warriors universe now that the culture and characters are so fully different from what they were in The Prophecies Begin. Maybe in the series after A Starless Clan, once all the characters we got to know in the 1st series are all dead, there should be a cat so asocial as a kit that when they become an apprentice, they only know 3-5 cats in the clan and barely the most obvious parts of culture. That way we could get to know the cats in the protagonist's clan in a more thorough way without having any of that "this protagonist has known these characters their entire life" excuse. Then they could finally advertise the series as a "perfect place to start for new readers" without _completely_ lying. And we can get to know the characters better since nobody really knows anything about any new characters in the last two series.

This actually helped me rethink my own original Clans. I had planned on each having completely unique ways of life not just with food and like the way they hunt but like how they operate and live in general. Like how NightClan cats hunt at night and sleep in holes. MountainClan hunt cougars and don’t really have a medicine cat. FishClan are like beavers. StormClan use feathers a lot…. TimberClan make dens in trees and DarkClan is basically a bunch of rouges who just show up sometimes 0w0

Riverclan don't fail us. River clan as a clan literally differs so much from the others. They can't hunt on border patrols, their kits practice fishing as kits, they're constantly in fear of flooding, and they struggle in the winter. Most or this I've gotten just from Crookedstar's promise. A book that definitely went into developing the clan as gossipy b*tches who don't want to start drama but love sharing intriguing tails.

I want evil protagonists (main arc), evil med cats, and evil apprentices. These kinds of people exist too (Murderous kids if Junko Furuta’s case taught anyone anything, killer doctors, etc.)! If one can write a creepy groomer into canon, then they can write a murderous med cat with personal gain, or a child who actually had petty reasons to kill someone and doing so gave moral panic to their clan with the “they’re just a kit” arguments.

i'd love an arc where it seems like we're starting in wind or shadowclan, but the protagonist's mom moves to riverclan to be with her mate around a moon or two before apprenticeship, so the book is spent with an apprentice learning about their dad's clan and adapting to it and maybe even falling in love with it. potential conflict of mom eventually leaving to go home bc she's so homesick and the protagonist feeling betrayed or torn. in general we need more culture and more good and present dads

Here's the thing: apprentices only real use beside telling us where they are age wise is that it allows them to interact one on one with an older cat. And I like that. I like the mentorship but only when it's done right. These mentors are shaping the main character in lots of little ways, and if the mentor IS the main character, suddenly they have a lot of responsibility. Watching them interact, especially if they're different can be really good. I think Lionpaw and Ashfur had the most potential, especially with how bitter Ashfur was and how poorly he treated Lionblaze and I think a part of me will always stand by the fact that it would be more impactful if Lion killed Ash. Bur there are others as well. Brightheart only had one apprentice and she was a pretty bad mentor to Jay to be honest. And Jay himself thought she wouldn't be good at mentoring because she was half blind. They left on a bitter note, which was never resolved. Squirrel being given to Dustpelt? Bold interesting. Fire trusting his daughter to his old rival. The apprenticeships should be less about training and more about showing the relationships between mentor and apprentice
