I'm so grateful that I realized this years ago. My house never gets so messy that it's out of control and it helps me soooo much now that I have a full time job. I empty the dishwasher every morning while I'm waiting for my coffee, clean up as I go, vacuum everyday (my house is small so it's not a big deal), complete a load of laundry every other day and take the time to tidy up every night. I usually don't leave clutter behind me when I'm leaving a room so everything is easy. The trick is not to let things pile up but dealing with small messes immediately. The flylady mantra "done is better than perfect" has helped a lot.

@@agoogleuser1827 lol yeah I don't like that either but I think she was putting it in the terms that a die-hard "all or nothing" person may be thinking in their head. I know for me I feel I'm not "doing it right" or "not doing enough" if I don't do the dirty spot plus the entire surrounding area or room. Before you can change that view at least you can give yourself permission to "do it wrong" to get small progress so you can get started.

I regularly do "5 things" instead of 5 minutes. As I'm cooking and before I walk out of a room, I take a glance around to find 5 (or 10) big or little things to straighten or put away. It works so well to help keep the house company ready.

I do my "bag and a rag" program. I try to trash a bag of junk every day. I started out with a small kitchen bag size and now it is usually half a Walmart bag full. The rag part is I have a thing about dishcloths. I like a fresh cloth every time I do dishes, but I don't like to" waste" my cloth if it isn't dirty. This applies in many aspects of life, like: "I will allow myself to wear a bikini when I lose weight" , or "I am waiting for the perfect moment in life to have kids or travel"... But the "perfect" moment may never come, and life is already short and precious, it doesn't need to be perfect.

If we do it earlier, there is some danger the kids might change their mind. And by the way, in my family we don't post the letter to Father Frost. The kids put the letter into the freezer and the next morning the letter disappears. And instead of the letter they find a beautiful snowflake. They still believe Snowman-Helper does it every year. GUILTY! GUILTY! GUILTY! I was\am a recovering "if you can't do something right.....don't do it at all" mindset. I can keep my main living space fairly clean but my room and car have always been a struggle. I will clean and without a doubt get excited to use my space and sure enough I am back to where I was before I cleaned up. The 10 steps I moved forward just brought me 8 steps back. But then I realized I am still 2 steps ahead. It doesn't seem like much but I stopped obsessing over being a messy person and really started challenging myself. Getting rid of stuff has helped but these 5 minute clean ups have honestly really helped. It made me also realized how much I can get done in 2 minutes (about the time of a commercial break if you get what I mean lol) Whether I am just dropping off a dish to the kitchen or picking up laundry (before laundry day?!) or dusting 1 shelf I remind myself that is 1 less thing to worry about for next time. I am currently sitting on my bed that is made and looking at a clean bedroom floor that honestly hasn't been clear since pre covid life. I am no where near a neat person but these changes have helped me. Give yourself a little more grace that you would have no problem giving to someone else but have trouble giving yourself. I am a terribly self critical person and expect a lot from myself but I have to realize that it isn't helpful if it isn't working. Celebrate small successes even when they seem menial.

OMG I can relate so much! (Honestly contributed it to my OCD.) Before we sold our house to fulltime RV, I would spend an entire day cleaning everything like crazy; and did nothing in between. What a waste of an entire day off work 😞. I’d have like 7-8 loads of laundry which was exhausting, and so many dishes lol Now that we have a smaller space, I definitely do ‘clean as you go’. Dishes are always done after a meal (occasionally I might leave dinner dishes for morning lol); and I always do a load of laundry as soon as I have enough for a load. I never have to spend an entire day wasted cleaning. Definitely a huge life improvement!

I think the puzzle analogie resonates so well with me... I hate puzzles (I am a teacher so somehow Everyone buys me them!). I have, so many times, decided to just try it and I unpack all the pieces, I spend hours (staying up late that night) sorting all the side pieces and then arranging the pieces by colour. Then I fall asleep. For DAYS the sorted pieces sit on my table and taunt me. I try to find time, I try to do the side pieces and corners but soon I get lost with all the pieces and feel overwhelmed. Eventually after weeks of it glaring at me and gloating over its possession of my table. I give in and pack it all away. And then the cycle begins again the next year with the next puzzle. This is exactly how I organise most of the time. I find a new system, I start a massive overhaul, I chuck everything out and start sorting for hours or days, then I stop and it sits there like a broken furby with its smug smile until I throw it all back in a cupboard until the next school holidays. 😭😅😅

I’ve never been happier than I have been since I starting doing laundry every day. I start the washer before I go to bed, move the clothes to the dryer as soon as I wake up and then put them away before I go to work. It feels effortless and stops me from doing hours worth in a day.

Oh man, I think that was one of the best post-video stories yet!!! My mama heart was right there with you saying yes..6 hours = crazy, but being the hero of Christmas morning makes it all worth it!! Lol and oh how I felt the dagger in the heart as you quoted him being over the furbie!!! 👊🏻 Such a funny (but painful) story!! Classic example of the fickle heart of a child!

OMG, The furby story was hilarious and unfortunately very true. Kids seem to get over everything pretty quickly before moving on to the next thing

Cass this is up there as one of my fave videos of yours all time both practical and the story (hilarious because all us parents have been there) I loved the puzzle idea and thought of Dana @A Slob Comes Clean saying to start with areas that are seen. If dishes laundry 5 minute tidy are corner pieces then areas that are seen are the straight edges and decluttering the junk drawer your clothes closet etc are inside pieces. The all or nothing method is like trying to do a puzzle from the inside out😫 Again thanks for your inspiration!!!😀👍

I just want to say that you are amazing. You get into the mental space that causes a block when it comes to getting cleaning done, whichvis so important. You are so related and I honesty was able to rid myself of "cleaning shame" by watching your channel. It's just comforting to know that I'm not alone in my cleaning journey. Especially since I grew up with hoarders, so you have taught me life skills that I didn't learn at home. Thank you! 👏🏼💐💖🤗

I had a very similar story with the furby , hearing your story reminded of me of my daughter one year asked for a furby for Christmas it was all she had asked for, and they were sold out all over town , we ended called at Manny different locations just to find a furby and one store 3 hours away finally had one, so we ended up driving to go get it for her lol but she was very happy on Christmas morning lol so it made it worth it

I've internalized this a while ago. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half assed. Problem is my mum is from the old school of thoughts. Smh Also that Furbie story killed me.

I might’ve had a mental breakthrough watching this. I know I’m an all or nothing kind of gal, but the penny didn’t drop about the corner pieces. And then the furby story. Priceless. God love you! I wish you were my neighbor.

1) I adopted the phrase "Just do it" this year as my New Years Resolution. It is the only resolution that I've even remembered in November much less am still working on. It has changed our family! When we see things that need doing, we don't put it off or write it down to do it later (except sometimes you have to), we just do it and we all are better for it! 2) The way you talked about the Furbie makes me think you didn't have one as a kid like I did. It was cool but then got annoying then creepy! If my kid wanted a Furbie, it would not happen... 3) You had me with you on all the twists and turns of your story... I've talked about the great stories you have, but today I figured it out: you are a great storyteller!!! I didn't actually want Milo to have a Furbie but I was nervous with you when the number was incomplete and then annoyed at the end, just like you. Thank you for the adventure!

I've tried to keep up with the baby steps. As a large-family mom, the struggle is real. 8 loads of laundry per week. If I'm lucky. My oldest 2 do thier own or it would be 15. No joke. Any progress is good progress, as I tell my cello students.

I love all your videos and with the holidays coming, it's a reminder to do a little each day. I have a similar story with a stuffed animal. My sons 1st grade teacher had a Paddington bear that made vists to the kids home. When it was time for him to return it he was in tears. So at Xmas I made it my mission to find him one. I thought I hit the jackpot on Amz but didn't realize I stumbled on to Amz uk!...wondered why they kept asking for conversion😂, I'm in the US and we could not afford the hundreds of dollars. a few weeks later and a trip to goodwill, my boys were trying to understand why we dropped stuff of at this building so we went in so I could turn it into a teaching moment...in the toy section my son found a Paddington bear made by sears for 1.00. He came home with us . My son is 23 and still has that bear 🙂 Thanks for all the hard work you do for great videos and your stories always put a smile on my face and chuckle in my ❤

Thanks for this. You said something similar in other videos too, just talking about how putting things off until you can devote more time to them, being prefectionistic, all or nothing and how that actually is counterproductive, and that it's much better to just take the minute to scoop the mess off the floor, do things as little pieces instead feeling like "Well, if I do that, I have to drag out the vacuum and clean the the whole place." You (and other KZbin mom cleaning experts but especially you) really changed my whole outlook and it had such a huge effect on my life. It works for other things besides cleaning. When you have kids (or live any kind of busy life) though it still feels like a hamster wheel LOL. But way more manageable. And just knowing that other people get as overwhelmed by it and have a hard time keeping up helps because I feel like in real life and on social media all I see are people who seemingly never struggle with keeping their homes clean. I always though it was a personality flaw but now I see I can change my way of thinking and I can accomplish (most) of what I want. Thanks for the videos!

I’ve never really thought that my desire to do it right meant I had to do it perfectly- for me it was just do my best and in my brain picking up the crumbs at that time seems like the best use of time and ability. Honestly the biggest problem I have is my desire to be done- project brain style like Dana K white days. It’s hard for me to see that doing part of something is good because I have so much to do I want the whole thing done so I can cross it off my to do list. It’s hard to break things down into little steps to do because that feels like it will take forever but then I get overwhelmed and do nothing. I like your phrase “It’s easier to do a little bit today than to do it all tomorrow” that really resonated with me and is causing me to look at things a bit different and hopefully make even more progress especially in the daily work of my home.

First, are you going to give Milo this Furbie? Second, I was “diagnosed” with a strong all or nothing mindset by a Weight Watchers leader many years ago. I often catch myself thinking/acting this way and have to remind myself that it doesn’t have to be this way. Thank you for helping me to realize that I’m applying that mindset to my cleaning, too. I’m going to try to break the cycle!

Thank you so much this is me to the T!! Not only do I procrastinate but I also get down on myself for not doing enough even when I do one little section. In the past two weeks I have changed my mindset and told myself it was okay to stop bc I accomplished this and that so I give myself permission to stop and relax. I still struggle everyday but I’m learning to do cleaning or organizing everyday.

Great video! My house has always been very neat, but not always super clean on the daily. I’ve started a 30 minute cleaning routine every day, plus shining the sink at night, and my house is always neat and tidy and clean! Two weeks in, trying to make it a habit. By the way, that sweater looks great on you - that’s your color!

My roommate and I were both in the navy, so the "do it right" mentality is ingrained in us. Even in the konmari method we're instructed to do everything in a marathon session because she believes doing a little bit at a time won't get things done. Those are going to be hard habits to break.
