Thanks for giving things away. I gave a bag of old towels and throw blankets to an animal shelter. Art and craft supplies go to a senior program at a local church. Books and magazines go to the library. Clothes go to Goodwill or cut up for rags. We're all adults, here. We don't need much.. Tina, Al's wife

Thank god you respect your kids stuff and what they love because when I was growing up my mother would throw away everything Pokémon. Like clothes and toys, etc. she thought I looked like a boy wearing a Pokémon shirt. Either way went to school one day and came back, all my stuff was gone. I was completely devastated.

I definitely keep stuff because my Mom constantly tossed my stuff or added it to Yard Sale stuff. It was ridiculous. I don't mess with the kids' stuff much aside from trash or broken with sharp edges etc. We live in a very small apartment so occasionally I will put some toys in a bin in the closet, and bring others out.

you seem like a great mom in terms of respecting your childrens' interests and space. My parents would shame me about having so much stuff as a child, then remove things from my room randomly or give them away. This made me hoard MORE things! It was very traumatic! I wish they taught me how to think of items in a positive and productive way rather than using shame.

Good job donating all that! Feels good to claim some space back. I’m a collector, but I am slowly cleaning out stuff. I moved over a year ago and finally unpacking the last of the boxes. It has been hard not having things in their proper place. And not able to see what ya have. Being a senior with health issues has slowed me down, but not stopped me! I can see the light at the end of the cardboard pile. 😊

Listen this is AWESOME! Yesterday my son also 8 and I went through it ALL. Together. It felt awesome and he’s SOOOOO HAPPY! We helped each other through the process and we are strengthening our decluttering muscles! It’s the same for us, just too much stuff to manage. We’re going through the whole house and it is AMAZING HOW MUCH PEACE WE ARE GAINING!!!! We have a tote for his stuffed animals because he LOVES them. I’m of the same mind, how would I feel about someone telling me I can’t keep something I love because they didn’t value what I do?!?! I’d be devastated, never would I ever want to crush their hearts. I have my family involved with everything that is theirs. We agreed to rotate the stuffed animals so there are five on the bed so they all get love.

Just found you and thoroughly enjoyed watching you do "your thing". Emma is adorable! Very smart for one and I notice she can also entertain herself. Like your approach to the clothes (what you are washing and what is still hanging in the closet). Also like the approach for the kids' toys. I could not throw out any toy without asking. I remember when my mother way back when threw away all of my paper dolls. I was crushed. So always check with the kids unless it is broken. I have a problem with the "what if I need it" and "someday I might".

Oh my goodness, so growing up my family didn't have a lot of money, so I made my own toys out of paper. I made this very elaborate "city" out of numerous sheets of paper, but all of the houses were 3D and I made like two dozen different paper doll characters. Each of them was elaborately decorated, colored, and each of them had names, I had a whole little community and I LOVED playing with them. Came home from school one day and my mother had thrown them all away -- like you, I was so absolutely devastated! It's so important to respect kids' belongings.

It really is! When I declutter and organize my girls space I see them pulling their things out and creating. At first I would think, of course I clean and they pull more out but once I really realized they're not just making a mess they're doing the things they love now there's a calmness to allow them to. We are a family of artists so their 'messes' tend to involve crafts. Their creativity goes up and their desire to spend time on their tablets drawing goes down as they pick up paper and pencils 💙

A couple of observations from my own experience: I totally agree with the black plastic bag. Even if you don't throw it away right away, you can leave it sitting as long as you want and that can alleviate some anxiety about it. Quite honestly every time I've done this even though it's full of stuff that I had difficulty parting with, after a week or two I could at most remember only one or two things that were in the bag! The other thing about taking stuff to donate. I wish I had kept track of how many bags and boxes I've got rid of. I also should have done before and after photos... I started by emptying two 10 x 10 storage units so I must have gotten rid of easily 50 or more bags and boxes. Some were garbage, most were donated. At least I could stand back and see the empty unit, but I'm trying to get in the habit of doing before and after when I'm decluttering at home. There have been only two times where I was in absolute emotional agony once I left the donations outside the building. Technically, once it's left it there it's supposed to belong to the charity, so it's really bad manners to go and retrieve it! However, I felt so desperate, even even after I driven a block away I was still tempted to turn around. I dug in my heels and refused to do it. In both instances they were things that I had never thought of until I was decluttering and was pleasantly surprised that I still had them! However I was trying to make myself get rid of the stuff so I did. Other than the rare occasion when I think back to donating them, I still never think of them!

I totally GET the space thing as I am a "space person" myself. -- A couple of tips: FIRST HINT: One thing I discovered with my grandkids.... (my baby is 28 years old now)..... I have a toybox upstairs in one spare bedroom for our younger grandkids, and the two youngest would haul toys downstairs to the basement family room and strew them all around, like... and entire cube container of army men and vehicles, and then I noticed during their 3-4 days stay that after the first day, they RARELY played with them. --We are on a ranch so they were outside in the pool during the summer, or riding their gocart, watching TV or on their tablets. But I have a basement freezer room and a separate pantry and as I went to them during the stay, I was constantly stepping on toys, had to move them to open doors to these two rooms, etc., and I got sick of it. Not only did my family room look like a total disaster, it was for no purpose because the toys weren't being played with. I made a rule 18 months ago that before bedtime, ALL the toys had to go back in the toybox upstairs! They could get them out the next day, but as most of the boys sleep in sleeping bags in the family room, they didn't need the toys all around. -- My son and his wife picked up on this and insisted that these younger kids pick up everything and put them away each night before bed. Not only did this help on the morning they packed up to go back, on the long trip home, so all they had to do was pick up clothes and sleeping bags, ...but nobody had to step on army guys in the wee morning hours going to the bathroom!! But most of all, I noticed that these toys were not hauled back down nearly as often, and not nearly as many... because the kids who were still young enough to play with them realized it was a PAIN to haul them back upstairs EVERY night and put them away!!! LOL My point. Teach your kids as they grow up, that toys go back into their toy space before bed each night. Even small toddlers can help pick up their toys if you make a game of it, but when you get up in the morning and not have to see toys laying all over your house and their bedrooms.... looking messy and clutterly, it gives you a surge of energy towards the day's cleaning ahead, knowing that you can do a fast vacuum in your main traffic areas without picking up toys FIRST! And teach your kids that their toys have a space and it must be contained in that space.... if they receive new toys, what toys do they no longer play with to make room for the new? SECOND HINT: Give each family member a NEW bath towel or a beach towel geared towards that person! That towel is the responsibility of the person using it and it gets used all week... and washed on Saturday or whatever day of the week you do that type of laundry. A cleanly washed body just needs dried, and with a large family like yours, washing towels for everybody, that use a new one each day, takes up HUGE amounts of energy! When my 3 boys were in grade school, they had a large beach towel that they used as their bath towel. My husband and I today have a large bath sheet... a microfiber one that is fantastic, by the way! When my boys entered 7th grade, I taught them to do their own laundry and gave them each their OWN day to do their wash. I would make sure I had MY stuff out of the washer the night before their day, so that they could start a load before bed, and put it in the dryer in the morning before school.... and start a second load that morning. I had no problem taking their first load to their room and transferring their washed clothes into the dryer for them so they would be dried and ready to put away after school, but by the time they left home for college, they'd been washing their own clothes for 6 years and didn't have to crash learn like many do in college dorms!! LOL By the time most kids get into Jr. High, how they look and their clothes become more important to them, and they have more of an incentive to put their clean clothes away instead of shoving them on their bedroom floors or in a closet. However, it doesn't work for every kid and I did have one that needed prompting... and he still could USE prompting as an adult still today. Just his personality I guess?! LOL

I use pushpins for all sorts of things but they will loosen in the hole and fall out. Just a heads up for the baby. I also use solid bags. I do not know who bought black bags last in my family but they have a scent and wow they stink to me. So I am really happy to get the bag out to the car pronto. That's another bonus! Oh yea a game changer for me is a cabinet by the front door that I can put all the things that need to go out but can't yet. It also holds stuff that comes in that we do not know where to put it or even stuff like that drill we carried in instead of putting it away. Close the door on it and my house looks picked up and I know where the stuff is when I head out the door. I got the idea from Cas from clutter bug.

I turned all the hangers after 3 months if those hangers were still the same way I got rid of them we now all have 10 complete outfits. Kept 2 sets of bedding for each bed one on the bed one in the Laundry. I can now get all the laundry done in one day. I am now going to buy everyone a bathrobe that way I can get rid of some towels, my house is being to feel bigger. A tidy home is a tidy mind. This video kept popping up in my feed today and I do need to declutter. I have done some but I still need to dig deeper and let more things go. I live in a small home and there isn't much room for stuff. One thing that has motivated me today was watching another YT-er that had some storm damage very near her home. This made me recall many years ago we lost everything to a tornado. There have been a lot of those this spring so far with many lives lost. I remember when we lost it all, but my parents and brothers and myself were spared, and that was all that was important at the time. All that other stuff we did hate to lose, but it gives you a different perspective about "things." Paying attention to the laundry is a good idea. I have mostly the routine things I wear daily. Thanks for the motivation. Lovely children, and Emma is a cutie, and having a ball with that stuffed doggie!!

I like the video. I am going to share something I have learned has happened to me. I saw your hard work and great parenting. But even better would be not question him again. I am talking about the teddy bear thing. You did tell him you can keep them all and then the next second you pursued him to give it to his sister rather than completely get rid of it. It still was not good because he will grow up and question his decision expecting someone else to persuade him to change or choose something else for him. I have notice at my 37 years old. That when I make a decision I ask if I did it right to someone's liking and or I choose what others would choose rather than what I would love. But that is the way I was brought up. We were poor and my mom would pursued me wouldn't I rather like... And so now I am not confident to make my decisions, I am soo indecisive, and look for validation it's horrible.

You are such an amazing person and mama! I’m soooo happy I found your channel! I can’t believe you have 6 kids, and also you are so pretty! I love the realness in every video and I couldn’t agree more with everything you say. Your family is blessed to have you! And if you read this thinking, she only sees what I put out and doesn’t know half of what actually goes on, you are still incredible and I aspire to be like you. You are incredibly self aware and selfless. 💛

It will feel better, it does help alot. I like decluttering, I gave away many tops that I had never worn. I figure someone else would enjoy the tops, I would probably just kept the tops in my closet and never wore it at all.

I’m glad you told him he could keep everything just to make some decisions! Takes a lot of pressure off and I remember coming into my room as a kid and knowing my parents got rid of my things 😢
