Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium vs Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 5

A quick just for fun comparison of two similarly styled watches. Tissot at the Jomashop price of $550 on bracelet is a great buy, mine keeps time within +/-2s per day and at least compared to the Tag Heuer, it’s very smooth to wind (although not as smooth as a Seamaster or El Primero, or something of that price point). Very pleased with it. Although I find myself wearing the Tag Heuer more. Even at Jomashop price of $1,700, I still think it’s overpriced for what it is (luckily for me it was a gift), but the case, dial, and bracelet finishings look nicer to my eyes. My biggest gripe with it is how unsmooth winding it feels, to the point where at times it’s actually hard to do so and hurts your fingers. Aside from that it’s a lovely watch, feels and looks more premium than the Tissot (aside from the winding), and it should for the roughly $1,200-2,000 more you’d be paying for it. If Tag Heuer gave this a real in-house, quality movement, it would be worth its price in my opinion. Again considering the different price points, this is a just for fun comparison of two similarly styled watches more than anything.

In regards to the overall specs and finishing the gentleman is much better in my opinion. I have the blue dial Gentleman and the black dial Carerra. Both on bracelet. I like the Carrera but I noticed I wasn't wearing it as often my last year of ownership. I noticed many watches from different brands were a better value for less than half the price. Many watches had much better finishing overall. Most also had more accurate and sometimes very nice in house movements. I did enjoy my Carrera for the time I had it but I ended up selling it late January of this year.

Just found out Ryan Gosling wears this exact Tag Heuer Carrera in the new movie Gray Man. Which is surprising considering this is a 2023 movie and there’s been a new Carrera out for at least a year now. But that was cool to see on Netflix

Both great watches, I have owned both, currently just have the Carrera black dial. Absolutely love it. Like it more than my Datejust 41, which as you say the Tissot looks like and holds its own at its price.

I have a blue Tissot Gentleman and a Gray Carrera. I love them both but the Tissot on a bracelet lacks something. I put it on a fairly expensive alligator strap and it looks way more premium now. But I still wear my Carrera to more upscale events cuz it simply looks more premium and also feels like it when you hold it in your hand

I have that exact tag. The thing is there is so much light play on the dial and the bracelet and faceted hour markers just makes is sharp! Those have the ETA movement. The Tissot is good, but the Carrera is a step up. Don’t pay retail for either though!

I have had both watches and can say that the Tissot is hands down a better value no matter what way you look at it except for perhaps the bracelet. Both take a beating in the secondary market for resale value the same but Tissot has a MUCH better ETA premium movement on par with 80H power reserves and accuracy as Omega/Rolex while the issue with TAG is that they consistently do as least as possible for a lot of money, they put generic SW200-1 Sellita 38H power reserve movements in their watches which are also found in $200 watches like Invicta. Also the Tissot has everything going for it including lume around the dial which TAG couldn't even bother with.....You aren't getting much at all for your money with TAG IMO and Tissot being a member of SWATCH has amazing customer service. Tissot is a respected Swiss watch house that is innovative....TAG of old yes not the new stuff. Great comparison video!

The only thing is that Tag Heuer Carrera have double AR coating which this particular Tissot does not have.

@@dmitryroytman9008 I prefer to have the ar coating only on the inside of the crystal. It's too easy to scratch when it's on the outer side of the crystal, and will eventually give it a milky or hazy appearance (after years and years of wear, hopefully.)

This Tissot with the silver dial is the watch that took my attention right away and I bought it without second thought. Still loving everything about it and wearing it every day. Wel worth the price. And in the right lighting conditions...there is hardly a watch with better bling effect.

Tag Heuer looks stunning. in my eyes the 2 watches are not even in same category look-wise. Tag looks so beautiful and elegant. I always discredit tag but in this case it looks even better than Grand Seiko.

I have a Tissot ballade with the powermatic 80 and a Heuer aquaracer with a caliber 5 and I feel the opposite. The Heuer is much smoother. I don't care about the power reserve since I rotate about 5 or 6 pieces. The Carrera just looks more premium and no one knows Tissot but people definitely know Tag Heuer. Don't get me wrong the Tissot Gentleman is a wonderful value packed piece and almost bought the gold bezel version. Went with the two tone Ballade instead. It was half the price.

That’s crazy. Maybe I just got lucky/unlucky with my movements. The Tissot is very smooth to wind, even when fully wound. Maybe not buttery smooth like an Omega or Rolex, but very smooth none the less. The Tag on the other hand is so unpleasant to wind I literally don’t want to do it. It takes a considerable amount of pressure to rotate the crown and it hurts my thumb and index finger. The Tissot also runs more accurately but again that’s probably just luck of the draw. I do think when you have them side by side the Carrera looks more premium but the Tissot holds its own when it’s not juxtaposed. Enjoy your ballade!

You know what I just thought about it, you might have a better time winding your aqua racer because it comes with a larger/wider crown that gets screwed in and is covered by crown guards. So the aqua racer has more crown to grip and therefore gives you more leverage when winding. The Carrera has a much smaller crown which I think is why my experience with winding the Caliber 5 (aka a rebadged Selita movement) is worse

@@gothops154 The Aquaracer is definitely stiffer that the Ballade. Very possible my Ballade is the "defective" one. Reminds me of an Orient Bambino I had once. it feels like the gears are crunchy. The smoothest I own is my longines. You can't hear any noise and it's effortless to wind. So good that I thought it was defective when I first wound it.

Looking at these two side by side, I find the Tag Heuer much nicer and more premium. The tissot almost looks very cheap. But in isolation the gentleman is a very nice watch.

Yes I very much agree. Without anything next to it, the Tissot could fool someone as a Datejust. It’s flaws really only come out if it’s juxtaposed against a higher quality watch

I’m shocked, without looking at labels I thought the TAG was the one on the left. Zooming in I saw it’s Tissot 😳 it looks so much more impressive than the TAG. Since TAG took over Heuer in 1985 they’ve gone from prestige to pastiche. Nothing like the quality, and automotive influence style of the 70s and 60s. They’ve dug into their Heuer archive many times to revamp an old legendary model from their heyday and still they do a cheapskate execution and get it wrong. Even Tissot are eating them alive here, what a pity for Heuer and their TAG rip-off associates.

If I would have money - Tag deginitely. I watched in the store - tag is much better than longines or breitling, for me. It is better quality.
