Another Jomashop review today, almost ready for a new batch before Christmas! Not my favourite dive watch this one. If you are looking for a dressy desk diver then I can see the appeal, but it is just too blingy for me. And there are a few flies in the ointment which I wouldn't let a $300 watch off with, so why should the Tissot get a pass? Cheers, Jody

I have the black face. It is very accurate and the lume is fine. Bracelet is low grade (clasp) and the bezel Numbers could stand out more. I’m not a diver. I swim, maybe snorkel, want something that keeps near perfect time and is carefree. This meets my needs and is in no way unpleasant to look at. As we all know, This is not my last watch..Ugh! Thx, Cheers!

I bought this stupid thing after Jody's review and ended up liking it quite a bit. Sure, the bracelet has a stamped clasp and pinned links, but it's comfortable, and the watch itself is actually quite nice looking on the wrist. And while the lume isn't Seiko-level, it's pretty decent when compared to a number of other similarly priced competitors. Dress-diver is correct. I don't see this watch as being terribly useful to anyone seriously diving, but I am pretty sure whoever owns it could jump into any pool or other body of water at a company retreat and be perfectly fine. It's a watch that is ultimately better than the sum of its parts, super comfortable on the wrist, and definitely worth considering at 25% off its MSRP with its 2 year warranty (the usual sale I see from ADs).

I have this SeaStar in both blue and black. Jody, I have to respectfully disagree with your somewhat negative review. Regarding the play in the 120 click bezel, I think JomaShop sent you something they should not have. Both of mine have incredibly clean and tight bezel rotation. In fact it is the bezel action to which I hold all other watches to. I would love to have seen a solid tri-link deployment claps or something more creative than the stamped existing clasp. That have been said, it is extremely durable, very comfortable, and very easily operated without any accidental pop opens. I think the big picture needs to been appreciated here. Consider how much watch is being offered here. While adding a more creative clasp would have been fantastic, it would have pushed this watch into another price bracket. For $500 as you mentioned (in Canada list is $975) this watch gets you the legendary 80 hour Powermatic! This watch is by far the most accurate in my collection. Out performing more costly watches. Don’t forget the front and back sapphire. Most certainly it is on the dressy side, yet it is comfortable in the boardroom or at a BBQ. This is my daily wear. Black mostly the office, blue days off. Completely agree the lume could last longer, at least the colour is a nice blue instead of cheap green. Is it perfect, no but in my humble opinion it is most certainly the best bang for your buck in that style and price range.

I just received a black one as a gift for my birthday and yes the bezel does have bounce back when you move it. Overall the watch is nice, but the bounce back makes it feel a little cheap. This kind of stuff really bothers me and since it was a gift I dont think I can do anything about it.

I have the black one and enjoy it quite a bit, Got it 18 months ago. I'll agree that the bezel has a minimal give back, but it's not a problem (I think it's less than 1/180th of a circle, 2°, or 1/3rd of a minute). The bracelet isn't my favorite, but I replaced it with a black and a black/gray 20mm NATO strap and quite enjoy it. Sure, I'd like it if the Lines lasted longer as well, but they are more than enough for my usage. The reason I got this watch, contrary to what I'm hearing on this video, this was the only reputable automatic Swiss dive watch with 300M water resistance with an open case back and a unidirectional bezel I could find in this price range. You could go Certina for more or Oris for 2-3 times the price, but those aren't in this price range. Mine runs about 6 seconds slow per day if I wear it 24/7, often I will sleep with it because it's very comfortable with the NATO and I like to see the Lumes. I don't baby the watch and wear it while doing work around the house, to the beach, etc. One day while cleaning the watch I managed to knock the glow in the dark pearl on the bezel off and sent it back to Tissot under warranty and they replaced the bezel with no problem. In summary, I'm very happy with my Tissot Seastar, but acknowledge that the bracelet could be better, the bezel isn't perfect and my preference would be for slightly brighter lumes. If you want a Swiss automatic dive watch with unidirectional bezel and transparent case back, I don't see how you can beat this in the price range.

Better than a Loreo for sure. c’mon what better option is out there on that price category ISO CERTIFIED?! It is a Swiss Tissot not a Japanese! You being too harsh. yes, the specs are all there... but come on, most cheat seiko divers are much better looking than this (to my taste), and that's more important to me than the specs. I talked to one last week and he said that they always send it back and the whole movement gets replaced because it is that cheap. they cant even regulate it... and you can't compare one small plastic component in the 1861 to the shitty and cheap powermatic 80, which is just a cheap eta 2824

Agree 100%...I have seen these watches online and thought they looked interesting. I made a point of viewing them in person, and for me they didn't quite fall into a particular category. The polish and color comes across as trying to be dress like, but it's a dive watch (the combination of the two came across as you stated "a toy") . Even on the wrist it did not feel right , it felt fragile and light like a dress watch , but I was looking at a diver....It was a bizarre mix of diving watch trying to be a dress watch.

Jody, I think you are one of the most knowledgeable watch reviewers on KZbin and I certainly respect your comments and opinion regarding the Seastar 1000. Having said that, I own the same watch except with the black dial. I am very satisfied and impressed with the Seastar. If I’m not mistaken, with the exception of your comments regarding the clasp, (which I do agree with you on) and the Lume, I think the majority of your other comments are subjective and a matter of personal preference. I researched quite some time before deciding on this Tissot Seastar. I think that the Seastar delivers on the specs it describes on ‘paper’, which are quite impressive. I find the watch to be accurate to within 4-6 seconds fast/per day. I have no issue with the bezel or any alignments. As you point out, its a rather thin watch, given its complications. With 300 Meters water resistance, 80 hour power reserve, solid crown, etc. and having purchased mine during a great Jomashop sale at just over $400. I am quite pleased with my purchase. I’m sharing my observations as I believe you asked viewers to do so. Thanks...Ed

Ed F I concur. I’m planning on saving up for one of these in the near future, and except for the clasp, which I will replace, the rest of the black dial variant seems to be the best dress diver this side of a Submariner. I’ve seen several reviews of this watch (mostly of the black or silver dial variants), and this is the only overtly negative review I’ve seen, with most of the points seeming to relate to subjective preferences for Seiko’s sportier aesthetic. While good lume is obviously preferred, I’m not a diver, so decent lume is enough for me, and an aftermarket clasp is something I’m simply planning on factoring into the final cost of the watch.
@edf2953

Geoffrey Pearce ...Hi Geoffrey, as you might suspect, from my perspective, you won’t be the least bit disappointed if you purchase the Seastar 1000. I too, read every review I could find on this watch, and all were quite positive. To be honest, I spent several days inspecting the watch for defects/flaws, etc. and other than what has been previously discussed (primarily subjective preferences), and I couldn’t find any. Barton Watch Straps has a fairly decent supply of 21 mm straps, including a nice black silicone strap which replaced the stainless steel bracelet on my Seastar 1000. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the watch, as I was afraid I was the only person who thought the Seastar punched above its price point. I really respect Jody, yet I wonder if the blue color-way of the watch he reviewed influenced his opinion? It’s one of the few blue dials which I really can’t stand.
@edf2953
@edf2953 4 жыл бұрын
Jody, i took the time to read the other comments regarding your review of the Seastar 1000. I must admit that it appears you only responded to a couple of comments which you described as being submitted by “Angry watch owners...”, which implies to me that you are right and others are wrong. I think, I for one submitted a very respectful comment offering my thoughts on the matter, merely because you requested that your subscribers do so. I guess I’ve learned a lesson and won’t offer my comments in the future. It appears that you take offense at differing opinions and I feel as if I’ve wasted my time, as a “non-expert”, Seastar 1000 watch owner, sharing my thoughts with your subscriber base. I feel as if the ‘expert’ implicitly let me know through your two responses to the multitude of comments that I made a mistake purchasing the Seastar 1000.

I got an older Tissot sport watch, with eta 2836 rotating bezel and butterfly clasp. Great watch, about five years old.smh. they just don't make them like they used too. Once the entry level swatch switched from the Eta 2824 and ETA 2836 to the powermatic 80 it seems the quality of the entry level swatch group seemed to drop as well for some reason. Yeah the ones with the powermatic 80 movement just aren't for me either. But the older ones with the eta 2824 and ETA 2836 are worth it all day. If you can still get one then do so I tell you. @gpearce11
@gpearce11 4 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree the clasp is unacceptable for the price, and if I were to get one I’d immediately upgrade it (probably with a strapcode clasp). The bracelet itself is quite nice though, and it looks quite good on a NATO. I’ve tried on the black variant, and have seen the silver dial one, and definitely think they both look better than the blue variant (the bezel lets the blue one down). I’m actually planning on saving for the black version in the future. I’m willing to concede that it’s definitely dressier than a Seiko Diver, which isn’t great of you prefer Seikos, but some actually want a dressier watch, especially if it’s their only watch for all occasions (which is also why many like the Submariner). Also I’m not sure I agree with you regarding specs for the price. The lume and bezel might not match Seiko for $500, but for a desk diver that receives only occasional dive use (if at all), the use of ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal and 80h power reserve (with display caseback) are basically unbeatable. Seiko by comparison only offers aluminium inserts, Hardlex crystals and notoriously inaccurate 40h PR movements unless you spend more than $1000.

For the price fantastic, but would go for the black version. Agree with you about this version. I could live with that strap at least it has an extension on it. I'd put it on a Eulit Perlon that would give it a classic look and a perfect beach holiday watch.

Yah, I agree the black is better. I like the bling and classy look. It doesn't look cartoonish like some slightly cheaper options. I did put it on a black perlon for these summer... A few weeks back I purchased a Tissot Seastar 1000 steel bezel. It is an older one from the 90's. Nice domed saphire, 22mm band, ETA 2824. I got a great deal on it because it wasn't running sent it to Tissot for service. Honestly they fixed it but I was not impressed. The service was $190.00 US dollars they replaced the gaskets tested the watch and brought it back to factory spec but they didn't brush or polish the case or band. I am not terribly happy with the bracelet or the clasp but I replaced the bracelet and I am 100% loving this watch. It sits nicely on my wrist and just fits perfectly.

The reason this one looks off is that it’s a very large dial with comparatively tiny hour markers and the pip on the seconds hand looks a bit silly. So it’s all large hands and tiny markers and a very large blank dial space with sunburst flashing away all shiny and wrong looking. The quartz version with sub dials may be a bit busy but at least the massive dial has some visual interest going on. At a nudge over 45mm it’s a big un though.

The blue gradient dial with black bezel version of this watch on the rubber strap is a much better looking watch in my opinion. Had it 6 months and love it. Use it on the supplied rubber strap and a navy NATO strap and it has never disappointed me. I think the pressed steel clasp actually put me off the other versions as it cheapens the watch. I have a couple of older Tissots which have milled clasps, so I’m disappointed they seem to be going backwards in terms of quality. I haven’t had an issue with the bezel- it’s seems pretty solid to me. All in all, I’m delighted with the version of this watch that I have. Great review as usual though Jody. Cheers, Gary

It's a strange thing - I've been trying to like Tissot's offerings since I started buying just one (more) watch, and I've never been able to do it. It's like they are trying too hard to beat the competition, and somehow miss the mark completely. Aesthetically, for me, there are just so many better options out there. That said, another great video, Jodie.

The blue/black fade dial with rubber strap is a far nicer watch and less blingy. I looked at the black dial version on a bracelet and it was nowhere near as nice (that clasp belongs on a Seiko!).

Not at all an expert here. I had the blue/black version of this one on my wrist the other day (rubber band .... I generally don't like bracelets) and I really liked the look of it. I don't have huge wrists, so I was pleasantly surprised that the Tissot doesn't look comically oversized on me. However: I also noticed that the bezel "lock" seemed a bit flimsy. But since I'm not an expert, I wasn't sure if this was acceptable or not at this price. However: I'm having a hard time finding another diver in this price-range that I really like looks-wise - and that doesn't look like a rip-off of, errr, an homage to a much more expensive watch.

Hi Jody, so glad you got Jomashop discount codes again. Thanks for the review of the watch. I love your honesty. It's not for me. Mainly to heavy for me. I like the hands and the dial. I think they should give you a properly milled clasp for a 500 dollar watch. I think there are better watches in the 500 dollar price range. I would rather have the 28,800 beats per hour to get the smoother second-hand sweep than a slowed down higher power reserve.

I definitely did not like the blue watch as reviewed, but the powermatic 80 movement makes it worth further looking. As others have said, the black dial watch is much more attractive, and a mediocre watch band never stopped me. I would order one on the silicone strap instead and replace that with a better bracelet, or simply order four or five Invicta Pro Divers in a variety of tasteful colors. Seriously, I think the 300 m water resistance feature and the Powermatic 80 movement make this watch in black dial for under $500 a serious contender for anyone’s collection.

I find this review refreshing. There are so many glowing reviews of the Tissot Seastar as a best bang for the buck dive watch. It's not a bad watch, but it does have its flaws. I think some Seikos in the same price range give it a good run for the money. Overall, it's a good watch for the $$ (and Tissot does offer great packaging at this price point), but it's not the miracle piece many represent it to be.

@@michal1249 - You're not wrong. Seiko has a bit of an issue with quality control in North America. I have had to return a few that were messed up on arrival. Fortunately, if you get a good one, you will usually figure that out in the first 3 days of ownership. On the other hand, you can't go wrong with the Seikos made in Japan exclusively for the Japanese Domestic Market - they are always spot on. I think they know that their own native audience is less forgiving than their foreign markets.

I completely disagree with the review - JOMW also managed to choose the least pleasing dial/bezel colour of this models available range, the bright blue. There is a superb Blue to Black Gradient on the Synthetic strap (Of which I am an owner) and the Black Dial, which looks stunning as well. The Seastar 1000 keeps solid company in the Dress/Diver tier, alongside the Oris Aquis Date, Longines HydroConquest and Alpina SeaStrong. This Seastar Dress/Diver is hardly an outlier, so you should review it as such rather than compare it against your preference for a more 'Tooly' Diver. This is an opportunity missed as a review because the review is already skewed towards a given bias - your preference for a style of Diver this watch isn't. As a result, the inherent value of the review itself is superficial at best - lacking objectivity. Taste is always subjective, it is clear that this watch is not your cup of tea, but the slating began the moment the review started and quite frankly I can't rate the review for possessing any substance. You do realize that a Rolex bezel has some play in it, don't you? If you can't objectively see the quality in spec that you are getting with the Tissot Seastar 1000 - (80 hours power reserve, Screw Down Crown, Exhibition Case Back with finishing on rotor and bridge of movement, Sapphire Crystal, 300m WR and Ceramic Bezel, COSC and ISO Certified etc etc etc ) - at a price point that equals and betters Oris, Longines and Alpina, then I'll leave you to it. As an aside - to slate this watch on the basis of looks alone whilst elevating the likes of Casio, is an exemplar of how utterly fickle and nonsensical the KZbin watch review game is. I'll get my coat ... and my lovely watch.

Ha, I have the same watch but on a rubber strap, which eliminates the issues around the bracelet, and makes it my go-to watch for casual watersports like swimming, kayaking, snorkeling and sailing. This was my first mechanical watch, and frankly does everything is is supposed to do - it is readable, handsome enough, has that big power reserve and keeps good time. Like Jody though, I never really fell in love with the appearance of the thing, and rate the quality as good for the price, but not exceptiona. It does not rise to the level of my Christopher Ward divers, by way of comparison. Like Jody, I also think the best executed aspect of the watch is the exhibition back. The combination of polished and brushed surfaces on the sides just looks too busy to me, and viewed from the top, thing is "all face and no case", which means it does not blend into the wrist visually, even the though actual fit is satisfactory.
