Prior to purchasing this sprayer, I did a lot of searching on both google and you tube for blogs and videos on this line of Titan's sprayers. Mainly there were promotional and informational videos produced by Titan, but very little content from people who had purchased this sprayer. I decided to make this video to demonstrate what an airless sprayer novice can do with the 1700. I'm not a professional painter nor is this an attempt to demonstrate professional airless spraying techniques, there are plenty of professional painters on you tube that do that. I'm just demonstrating that with a modest investment in this line of paint sprayer, a pretty good result can be attained in much less time than it would take to roll.

Great video. Very informative. I noticed you over-sprayed onto your shutters and trim. Did you repaint your shutters and trim with the sprayer or a brush?
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you can tell from the video or are familiar with Florida stucco construction, but both the shutters and trim are also stucco. They just raise, lower, or smooth over the profile of the stucco to achieve a contrast. Because it is done like this, the easiest thing to do is go back with a 4" roller and paint the white areas. If finer work is needed, a brush is used. Thanks for the question.

Just purchased this sprayer in part from this posting of yours. I was concerned the setup was for small projects (doors and such) and not have the backbone to do a house. Looks like it does and I look forward to painting mine, a much much smaller dwelling. My only question, if you remember, is how much paint is used to prime and fill the hose. I wonder if a quart of paint for a small project is not enough?
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 5 жыл бұрын
Good question, I think you'll only use a quart of paint or less to paint a front door or other small project, but I found that I need the 1 gallon paint can to be half filled with paint to have peace of mind to prime and paint a small project like a door. The intake with filter end needs to remain submerged under paint but not right up against the bottom. I think trying to do this with a quart of paint would be risky; don't know what would happen if an air bubble gets in the line and if you'll get spits. I look at it this way, if you end up having to buy a 2nd quart, then you've spent the money for a gallon the way they price things. So buy the gallon, make sure it's sealed properly, in a few years when you use it again just stir and strain and you should be good. By the way, like the handle. Spent 26 years in the Army myself; you guys were/are life savers.

Thank you JNG! Does the control actually adjust pumping rate, or just max pressure cut off? And is the range real, in that is setting 1 about 20% of setting 5? I am looking to use it to pump liquid at a controlled rate. Use the Titan ED655 now, but it won't go slow enough. Thanks again!
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Short answer, I don't know. I'm familiar with the ED655 and I would say that machine gives you greater control on what pressure the liquid will be moved through the line at then the Titan 1700. The Titan 1700 system is designed to operate at 1,000 PSI. I do NOT believe the number 5 on the system corresponds to 1,000 PSI and the number 1 is 1/5th of that (200 PSI). I believe the numbers represent a range from just below 1,000 to just above 1,000 PSI that allows you to adjust the spray pattern based on tip size, hose length, and viscosity of paint you're using to achieve the optimal spray pattern.

I noticed you use a bag strianer to filter out debris, what mesh size is it? Does it help to eliminate the gun clog ? My biggest complain about thiss thing is that it lack a gun filter which I have to stop and unclog from time to time. The typical yellow color gun filter has mesh size of #100, which equal to 150 micron, the strainer bags I can find on amazon are 600 micron, to big of the hole I assume.
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 4 жыл бұрын
The strainer bag used was the 5 gallon bag found at Sherwin Williams. I apologize I do not know the mesh size. If you google Titan ControlMax and inline filter you will see they make a filter for this; inline is the keyword. The directions stated it could be attached directly to the gun, but I found that to be impractical.

Thanks for sharing the video on your use of the Titan 1700 sprayer. it was great. I want to know if you have used the sprayer for interior use, and how if may have performed in spraying on ceilings. How were you able to use the volume of paint remaining in the 50' plus hose ? Lastly, have you used it for small area spraying, such as spraying trim areas? Thanks - Lee

The only interior spraying has been in a 3 car cinder block garage on the walls, everything else has been exterior. I'm not sure I have the confidence to go into a fully furnished house yet with this baby. When flushing the system after spraying, you can empty the paint in the hose into the paint bucket and recapture it. Just watch for the water to start flowing then transition to your waste bucket. I have the 311 tip and have every intent to use this on trim/doors at some point, just need to build confidence and familiarity with the system first. I currently use the Titan Handheld Flexspray when I do trim/doors. It's a portable HVLP set-up and does a great job.

I would say go for it only if you have the $300 in your budget to spend on this unit and you have enough paint projects to get a return on your investment. If the answer is yes to both of these, than proceed as follows: watch as many you tube videos on spraying as you can (Idaho Painter or Nick Slavik). When you think you're ready to put paint in the machine, follow all instructions in the manual to a "T" and buy a quality paint. Gather up as many cardboard boxes as you can, than practice on them (Note: before this step, you could even load the sprayer up with water and practice with that on the side of your house just to take the 'masteek' of spraying away). Once you feel your ready to go, start on the least visible portion of your house (the back or where ever). I think as a beginner your two biggest "oops" will be holding the gun in one place to long (applying too much paint) and over-spray. Hope this helps. In truth, it was intimidating the first time I did it, but after one side of the house, you start to feel comfortable. And make sure you clean the machine properly, it would be a shame to only get 1 use out of something that will last quite a long time if properly taken care of.

I have not used a gun extension with this unit; however, the Operating Manual that came with the sprayer lists 2 gun extensions available for purchase, a 12" (Part # 353-709) and 24" (Part # 353-710) tip extension.

I’m trying to use my Titan Controlmax 1700 for the first time. I’ve primed & done all the proper steps numerous times but it’s spraying out of the sides of the spray gun tip. I know it has to be something very simple that I’m doing wrong! Suggestions ?
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 2 жыл бұрын
Christi, here's my recommendation. Take the guard with spray tip off the handle. When you squeeze the trigger, you should get a steady stream of paint out. That tells you the machine is primed and ready for spraying. Ensure the tip seal/washer is in the guard. Screw the guard onto the gun, don't tighten all the way. Insert the spray tip ensuring the spray tip goes all the way in. Tighten the guard onto the gun. Directions say hand tighten, but sometimes you can't get a good enough grip to get it tight enough so use a pair of pliers to aid in tightening it. Don't need to over do it on the tightening. If this didn't fix your problem, inspect all the parts and surfaces to make sure they look serviceable. If still not working, flag a painter down that's working in your neighborhood and offer him $20 for a quick 10 minute class on the sprayer. If he can't put it into operation and have it spray properly, then it probably has a manufacturing defect somewhere. Plus you gave the painter lunch money for 10 minutes of his knowledge. Hope this helps.

Hello, Great video. Do you know or anyone else on here know what tips I would need for Water based paint? Stain and polycrylic and polyurethane?
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 3 жыл бұрын
It's best to understand what the TIP numbers mean, then you decide what will work best for your situation. I say this because you can spray a water based latex paint with a 517 or a 311, paint just comes out differently. First number on a tip is spray radius when held correct distance from wall. So a 517 will produce a 10" spray pattern. You overlap 50% during passes so you're covering 5" every pass. The next 2 numbers are orifice size, in this example it would be .017". Larger the number, larger the orifice size, the more paint will come out. The data sheets for products normally specify what size orifice works best for that product. Hope this helps.

How does this model with the correct tip size paint cabinets? Is it capable of kitchen grade paint quality?
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 3 жыл бұрын
Great question, not a simple answer. I'm not a professional painter, nor have I painted a kitchen's worth of cabinets. I have used this to spray finished carpentry projects (chair rail, ship lap wall, etc). I can get a nice finish on those. Is it kitchen quality, no idea. I can think of a few drawbacks to this system for doing cabinetry: no filter, no HEA fine finish tips, and no 3'-6' flexible whip hose. Since making this video, I've purchased a Titan ED655 Plus. This would be a system I'd recommend for cabinetry. Hope this helps.

Silly question. I know it say airless so that means I don't need a air compressor right? Also is it good for latex paint?

Correct, no air compressor required. Latex is what I was spraying in the video....no filters on this system so recommend straining your paint to prevent/reduce clogs.

@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 5 жыл бұрын
Hey TSW, if your sprayer is working properly, it sounds like you have the knob in the downward position (prime position). When it is in that position, it will run continuously with fluid being sucked up the intake hose and expelled out the smaller return hose. If you rotate the knob clockwise 90 degrees so it is pointing towards the front of the sprayer, it should run until pressure is built up in the hose with spray gun attached then shut-off. If that is not occurring, then I would say it isn't holding pressure....then I'd call Titan support line. I've talked with them on 1 or 2 occasions and they are very helpful. Good luck!!

I haven't used the Harbor Freight sprayer nor do I have any knowledge on it. My goal was to simply put a user demo of the Titan ControlMax sprayer since there weren't any on KZbin at the time. I will add one of the selling points of this system is it's made by a company that makes sprayers from DIY to Commercial level. It's what they do, it's all they do.....like Graco. If your sprayer says Titan or Graco on it, there's some institutional knowledge behind the piece of machinery.

In California, a Licensed Handyman is bound to making no more than $500.00 a week in gross wage income. That is in place so they don't cross over and steal work from C or B Licensed contractors who are held to strict rules and comprehensive insurance coverage. Plus before a C and especially B license is issued, years of documented experience and a 2 part test is required to pass, one based on the trade laws, and the other based on trade knowledge. I have seen "handymen" break those rules many times, perhaps a felony keeps them from getting licensed, lack of experience, laziness, irresponsibility, etc. Painting that place for $500.00 seems undoable, are the laws different in your state?
@jnghandymanllc3273
@jnghandymanllc3273 5 жыл бұрын
Tom, the house in the picture is roughly 2,600 square feet of interior heated space. Your statement of "painting that place for $500 seems undoable" is a very accurate statement as I spent more on paint alone than $500. I believe I said it in the video, but if not, that house was a rental of mine I was prepping for resale so that was pure sweat equity plus the cost of Material and Supplies. I'm sure the laws are different in FL than CA based on your statement of a licensed handyman is bound to making no more than $500 a week in gross wage income. I'm not aware of any weekly gross wage income limit in Florida. Most states and counties are pretty clear about what you can or can not do.
