"I'm struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field," 'Titanic' director James Cameron tells ABC News.

This is why I am worried about commercial space flight. Some of these tourism companies are only looking at profits & not the safety of the passengers. This was a sinceless tragedy that was solely the product of the CEO's negligence. He knew this sub wasn't tested properly. Yet still took a chance & now 5 deaths including his own have perished. R.I.P. 💀

Whats ironic is the Starline company that built Titanic had that same flawed attitude. Very sad.

Why worry ? People know the risks. Bill Paxton wrote his will before taking the trip. All bets are off in any sort of expedition of this nature. Space is arguably safer than this, once reliable rocketry is mastered then it’s so much safer. Of course it will only be accessible to the very rich.

well the company is toast, as dead as the sub. even if they started doing things right and created a new better sub no ones going to get in it. this kind of failure takes care of the profit hungry companies not focused on safety.

Cameron is a straight shooter. 1. The vessel was not safe. 2. It had no business going down. 3. There was no banging noises. 4. No bodies will be recovered. 5. Going that deep is only ok to do with right science, certification and safety always first.

Human: "I think I'll underestimate Nature." Nature: "You will do so for the last time." Honestly, the more I learn about the sub, the more it sounds like a 50/50 coin flip suicide expedition than exploration.

50/50 coin flip - perfectly captures it. I can’t believe how cavalier that CEO was with baseline safety concerns. The way he so flippantly looked at risk like, “Well, if you want perfect safety, just stay in bed” (or something stupid along those lines). And just the idea of these token titles of “mission specialists” for tourists just smacks of a lack of seriousness.

They had previously had successful trips to the wreck, the problem being the carbon fibre construction is new and likely developed micro cracks with repeated stress & temperature change. It’s probably not possible to model this in a computer because it’s not a material typically used. It’s really sad and unnecessary considering so many safe trips have been done then some idiot comes along to make money. It’s possible we’ll learn he was in some financial difficulties and felt pressure (pun not intended) to do the trip.

I'm glad someone with as much gravitas as J. Cameron is speaking out. The truth will trickle out now the incident is in the recovery phase. I was thinking about the court case against Oceangate (which ironically already sounds like a scandal) by a former engineer. That is going to be very interesting for the surviving owner to explain! I'm sure that the surviving family of the passengers will sue and Oceangate itself has no chance of survival. No doubt they're burning documents as we sleep.

Nope. Passengers signed “Absolute Releases.” Unless it can be PROVED that the Co. KNOWINGLY took a DEFECTIVE sub down, with “reckless disregard” for the lives of the ppl on board, no one will recoup a penny ……(And the “foreknowledge “ and “reckless disregard” charges would be almost impossible to stick, considering the CEO, himself, was on board)…. Unfortunately, this is one of those very tragic, “Other Peoples’ Tragedies Will Inform Future Consumers”……

Exactly, Rush was warned more than once about the integrity of the Titan, but this guy had an answer for everything, listened to no one, and with no regulation by a higher authority, "marched to the beat of his own drum", ultimately only focusing on cost, net profit, and the bottom dollar.

I wonder how long it will be before Hollywood makes a movie based about this event? Starring one of the surface ship employee that either is disgruntled or through corporate spying is the one that sabotages the safeties on the dive vessel, it will also have some unnecessary love triangle and family drama to up the intrigue. It will highlight the valiant efforts of the coast guards, who will be commanded and staffed by hot-looking young actors and feature a battle between Jason Statham (their Admiral) vs. a megalodon. With quotable lines like, "The way of water has no beginning, and no end.......I say we nuke the shark from orbit, it's the only way to be sure!.......Game over man! Game over!" I hope James Cameron will direct.

All those souls who died on the Titanic, had no idea this was ever possible (it would sink) nor had a chance to save themselves! 💔 it breaks my heart. To use this site as a sightseeing tour is bizarre in itself! All dives to this sight should only be for knowledgeable purposes and to help understand what may have gone wrong and to preserve its recognition for those lives lost that fateful night! Lives Matter!!! Money can not replace life!! 😢😢🙏 James Cameron respected the seas, respected the sight and respected the reason he was there to begin with, for this he is alive to explain what he is doing. My thoughts are with ALL the families who have now lost loved ones regarding the Titanic 🙏⚓️

I had definitely wondered what James Cameron thought of this not as a filmmaker but as one who'd done the dive there many times. And boy, did he know. He didn't get into the Titan's deliberate diversity hiring to avoid the look of "a bunch of 50-year-old white guys" in control (i.e. experienced ex-Navy submariners) or the improvised nature of the vehicle with bits and pieces bought from Camperworld and a literal video game controller to control it, but on the other hand pointed out the proven need to have a hull that's a single cast piece, along with a buddy sub to assist if things go wrong. I only recently found out the sub had not passed any nation's stated safety requirements for a deep submersible but that's just further evidence this was a cowboy expedition which met its match in the merciless pressure of the deep.

That was an obvious PR way to say "I don't want to hire the experienced guys because they push back on safety." It had nothing to do with diversity. He was deliberaetly hiring inexperienced engineers who wouldn't say no.

Good day Sir Cameron. Am following this tragedy for quite a while now and no one has been able to answer my question yet. I hope you can help me to understand it Sir, please? I understand what's the difference between an IMplosion and an EXplosion. What I would like to understand is: what the difference is between the debris/remains of an Implotion and an Explosion? What's the difference between those two? How can they tell/certify that it was and Implotion and not an Explotion? If I may ask? My regards.Greetings from EU Netherland 🫡. With all the respect. Thank you Sir.

Regulation, rigerous testing, and certification, exist so that human hubris doesn't replace respect the protection of human life. James layed out why this needless and ultimately predictable tragedy was entirely preventable. They thought they were smarter than everyone else and worse - could out whit the forces of nature itself, cut corners and make up their own rules, now inocent people in the companies charge are dead. The compa should be ran out if business no matter what.

@hcpalmer

@loosilu I don't mean just the business operation. Specifically, I am talking about going after what assets of the business itself might still have outside of the physical submersible, as well as the private assets the estates of the principles of the business. While difficult to achieve, due to contract law (i.e. wavers signed by paying civilian customers) the families of the non-professional paying customers must and should sue to put financial pressure on the company to pay up and ultimately go out of business for their hubris in making promises and not being able to deliver...as a matter of fact failing spectularly and causing the death of people who at the end of the day were "tourist." Wealthy tourists, to be sure, that perhaps we shouldn't shed a tear for, as they had the resources to do their due diligence, but still, THIS WAS ENTIRELY PREVENTABLE That's the most important point. This was a foreseeable tragedy that could have been averted based on all available science that has been tested over the last 75 YEARS.
