Titanic sub disaster: James Cameron says lack of "discipline" led to implosion

The Royal Geographical Society in Ottawa played host to acclaimed Canadian filmmaker James Cameron on Tuesday in a new summer exhibit that features the "Titanic" director's submersible 'Deepsea Challenger."
The exhibit entitled 'PRESSURE: James Cameron into the Abyss' is "aimed at inspiring the exploration and conservation of the ocean."
The opening of the exhibit on June 5 came shortly before the world was gripped by the disappearance of the 'Titan' submersible.
An international search effort led by the U.S. Coast Guard that included Canada raced against the clock to locate the OceanGate Expeditions’ vessel and the crew aboard before it was announced that a debris field had been found and the crew had perished.
Cameron says a good friend of his perished in the incident.
"P.H. Nargeolet - who is a legendary submersible pilot, fellow Titanic explorer - so it's an emotional shock, it's like a gut-punch you don't expect it because you don't expect an implosion to happen because that's what you spend all your time and finite element analysis in your computer simulation and everything else to prevent. But they obviously didn't do that, they didn't approach it with the same rigour and discipline, unfortunately," Cameron said.

I don't know the man but I don't agree curiosity has to be science-based or even solution-based. I love science but everyone should be curious about life in general. If we find solutions to things on the way then great. But asking questions and being curious is a start. There's just SO much we still don't know.

I really respect Mr. Cameron. People who know what they're doing and respect what others have already learned and set down for guidelines become leaders and inventors themselves. He is exactly the type of person I would want to learn from.

Being a Director has been a means to an end. He is extremely passionate and knowledgable in Marine Submerssibles etc. He's more than a movie director really. I always notice how he doesn't rely on others to answer complex questions or give complex answers around submersibles and the industry. Respectable!

No surprises there. Rush was never in Cameron's league. In fact, I think he was jealous of Cameron's successes both underwater in deep sea expeditions but also in his fame and publicity. Rush was your classic narcissist craving attention and he was prepared to do it risking people's lives under the falsehood of "innovation".

I think the more someone mentioned safety the further he steered from it ... Lastly I find it really hard to believe that he himself did not know what the outcome would be or eventually be ( it just seems damn impossible that he was clueless to this THEY WERE DESCENDING way to quickly , way faster then ever before I forgot the exact estimate on their speed but I do know it was incredible faster then any other before .. @@ajmoody6399 I'm not sure I agree with your assessment of him as "brilliant" but yes I agree with the rest of what you have said. There are many possibilities for why he may not have known why they were descending so quickly (may not have been a noticeable difference, it's not like putting the pedal down in a car), one is he could have been distracted by his overenthusiastic passengers (particularly the Dawood's) asking lots of questions, another is that his instruments didn't give an obvious indication of a too fast descent, another is that even if he knew they were descending too quickly, they could theoretically get to the Titanic quickly then engage the thrusters near the bottom etc. The possibilities are endless. As to why they were descending too quickly, it could have been an undersea water current (a bit like the one James Cameron experienced) or somebody miscalculated the weight to ballast ratio (remember how Oceangate screwed up on a previous dive when one of the team installed the thruster backwards causing them to lose control at Titanic depth?). Want to know the bottom line here? Stockton SCREWED up royally, he KNEW his submersible was badly designed and badly tested, he KNEW he used carbon fiber which was only going to last x number of times before needing to be replaced, that's why he installed that useless Real-time Monitoring System so that he could (in his mind) surface the sub in time before the hull compromised. He was DELUSIONAL, DANGEROUS and a MANIAC on a mission to make money and become famous like an Elon Musk. Screw Oceangate!

what i see with James Cameron is, The deep sea mission was a passion project and from his life times work in the movie industry it afforded him the means to endeavor into another industry. James clearly went in humble he knew absolutely nothing but because he had humility he was able to listen n learn every single detail about his deep sea challenger he and his team commissioned to build. The reason why he is standing here before us is because him and his team crunched the numbers calculated the risk picked the correct material that has already been proven to work at deep depths. what he built was designed for beyond purpose. instead of fit for purpose he went beyond purpose thats why it can go 3x deeper than titanic. Say what u will but Jim and his team helluva job. thats the difference between deep sea challenger compared to titan. I wonder how many challenger james trashed thru testing to get his final product

All you need to do is put the vessel in a pressure tank at pressure deeper than you’re planning on going. If it doesn’t implode you’re good to go. No testing then you’re risking your life and others just to save time and money like Stockton Rush. Seems like he really was ready to die down there. His passengers didn’t deserve his dishonesty.

This implosion of the Titan that the media is talking about is awfully weird because it reminds me of the terminology used in describing the Trinity Gadget that was dropped at Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1945 around the time when television was coming out. It was an implosion-design plutonium device, just like that of the Fat Man bomb which was dropped over Nagasaki. And judging by the video of the U.S. Coast Guard unloading the supposed Titan debris in Newfoundland it does not look like the real Titan imploded. The debris that was brought onto the pier was comprised of pieces of a sub that were mostly intact and had no appearance of crinkling, denting, or any significant damage that would have been caused by an implosion. I'm therefore convinced that this whole incident was a cover-up and that the actual Titan was hijacked by remote control by some government agency which took over the sub's Starlink satellite connection, sending it into a remote location thereby marooning and killing the five on board, perhaps for profit.
