If you can strike the ball you can play blades. I still think it makes you a better player over time because it forces you to start finding the middle of the club. Ping's are fitted for Mark so that along with lofts probably played into his numbers a bit? Really a great time to be playing golf....SOOOO many good options on the market for every level of player and every budget I think. My equipment was all 12-15 years old as I hadn't been able to play much due to time constraints and changed my whole bag out this year with my first ever set of custom fitted clubs. Man do you see a big jump in performance with equipment over that many generations and can't say enough about custom fitting. Wish I would have gone down that path years ago. Definitely worth the investment.

From my personal experience, using a blade will help you become a better ball striker. Having used mizuno t-zoid pro's for over 15 years (why fix what isn't broken), they teach you how to hit it pure. If you miss the sweet spot you get instant feedback. Conversely, a well struck shot is rewarded by that "buttery" feel. Use blades!
@JordansTake354 жыл бұрын
I would suggest any player of 12 handicap or below and especially 12s with a high swing speed consider blades. The newer blades have softer leading edges and are more forgiving on fat and skinny shots than old blades, and if you have a high swing speed you don't lose that much distance on off center swings. Also blades make you focus more because in the back of your mind you know they are blades, because of that you are less likely to over swing, or think that you can get away with a reckless swing because of technology. I started hitting the ball better when I switched to blades and I couldn't figure out why, took me a while to realize that this was the case.
@jeremyreeves53495 жыл бұрын
Any handicap can play these clubs, it's all about hitting the sweet spot consistently and this highlights the importance of getting properly fit for new irons. These clubs look great and I put them in the category of the new Ping Blueprint irons, which also look amazing. I'm a 2 handicap and that thin topline in the 5, 4, 3 irons doesn't exactly fill me with confidence at address. If I went with a true bladed set of irons, I'd probably opt for a combo set to replace those clubs with a CB iron in the range. Great video!

In a 35 year love affair with golf, I've yet to see game improvement irons improve anyone's game. I've had many iron sets and always come back to blades. Most of my best rounds were played with them. You need to set up better. You need to concentrate on a solid strike. They should not be considered scary to anyone.

Only 3 years late but your post speaks volumes, especially the 'game non-improvement irons' bit. 100% in agreement with your post. The tiresome "you shouldn't use forged blades" argument is up there with golfers upgrading to the latest driver w/whatever bs technology golf manufacturers come up with to con people into thinking they’ve got an extra, secret 10-15 yards on their drives if they shell out _another_ £300

Not sure I’d agree with that conclusion…If your enjoyment from golf is getting the lowest scores possible, then get the most forgiving, numb club you can hit within the rules…but, if your idea of an enjoying round of golf is coming away with a few memorable shots (feeling wise), then play blades!!! I am about a 10 handicapper, but I spend way more time hitting on the range than I do playing a round…so, for me, hitting buckets of balls with a numb club that will give you the right distance no matter where you hit it on the face isn’t as appealing to me as getting on the range with a set of blades that you know will just feel special when you hit them right! Give me the blades any day!! You constantly hear reviewers say, “pros aren’t playing these, so you probably shouldn’t either.” Pros will give up feel, shot shaping, etc, if it puts more $$$ in their pocket. Just the nature of the beast. So, they can’t afford to put feel and memorable shots before making a living…just the facts…

I'm a 9 Handicap currently and I'm using Callaway X Hot 2 and I've been playing them ever since they came out oh maybe 7 years ago I think. I've been golfing on and off back then and I made my first clubs about 20 years ago. I really improved my game over the last 2-4 years but I DON'T attest that to using GI irons, but I contribute that to playing A LOT more often, and hitting the range which improved my game. I've sort of hit a plateau where I've been trying to place my shots and be more consistent with my shots, however I feel that I've lost confidence in my Callaway clubs and play them with a lazy attitude, as I think they will just correct my errors. I recently got a fitting of these new 620 MB irons and I have to say WOW! I felt a bit nervous at first since I've never shot blades before, however once I got dialed in with shaft selection, and lie angle I was consistently striking the ball center and out of 10 shots with my 7 iron I was withing a 10 circle and off distance was withing 1-2 yards. Looking down at the ball I feel so confident now knowing that I can work the ball how I want and having the instant feedback on range days I can improve my game easier. I still am waiting to order them out here in Oahu, HI, but I can not wait to have them come in and get some rounds under my belt. I might jump from an 8 to a 10 or 11 HP however I know after I get used to the clubs I will dip below 8 almost certainly once I dial in my accuracy with all my clubs.

I agree with your last point to a certain extent. But if cavity backs or Game improvement irons made a real difference. Then the average handicap would be lower a lot lower. I have had to take some time off, from the competitive side of the game for personal reasons. But also my head just wasn’t right on the golf course, and that’s what a lot mid to low handicappers have to deal with (IMO). I really believe that blades don’t make so much of a difference as do your mind and your practice time on the range and the course. Getting your self mentality ready for the game, is far more important than what club is in your hand.

I love blades, the thin look is amazing, a pured blade is one of the best feelings in golf, and they have amazing distant control. However they give painful feedback if you miss off the toe alot and you will lose distant if your not striking them correctly. I'm going to try something other than blades for the first time though been getting a lot of pain I'm my wrist lately, specifically the tendon running from the thumb. So I'm hoping something more forgiving will help that out.

I know its 3 years late but I don't see it as bad if you lose distance when you dont hit it pure. Missing it short left/right is often better than pin high left/right in my opinion, and when you dont hit it well it is often drifting to the side anyway so losing distance in that case isn't necessarily bad. I do hit it pretty far, so length isn't my concern, but I would aruge consistency is by far the most important trait for an iron club.

I knew this was coming! knew it! Mark just can't help himself can he? He looked super excited to try the Ping Blueprint irons too! To be fair, I'm just as bad! I love forged blades too. I've owned my fair share of them over the years as well. MP-32, Hogan Apex, Hogan Radials, etc. All that said, the truth is, anyone with above average ball striking skills can play blades if they REALLY want to. Also, I'd say they'd do just fine with them too. If you are going to play them you just need to understand the differences between blades and even a tour level club like the AP2/T100: 1) Your misses will be worse than with ANYTHING else you could play. Front to back and left to right dispersion will be greater. 2) You will lose some distance 3) You will get more spin than with any other type of club. 4) Blades generally have less bounce than anything else on the market, so diggers beware! As long as you go into it understanding this and are willing to live with those differences then I don't see any reason why anyone who is a mid handicap player or better couldn't put them in the bag.....assuming that ball striking isn't the main reason why you are a mid- handicap player!

It looks like this fellow has had one too many lessons. He's more concerned about his swing shape and finish, than hitting the ball and putting his body into it. Hit the ball as hard as you can, and find your natural rhythm, then work on consistency and see a coach for fine tuning. Starting and finishing your swing to "look pretty" before you figure out how to actually hit a ball is a waste of time ;) On the topic ... massive club heads may help you make ANY kind of contact with the ball and may help slight off-hits. But really ... if you're missing the club face by a massive amount, no "game improvement" iron is going to do a single thing. You're better off struggling to hit more compact irons and forcing yourself to become more consistent in general, by having less room for error.

With all the tech out there now even tour players are going away from pure blades, definitely no need for club golfers to get full sets of blades

Neil Taylor or mixed sets if they do game blades! Even Justin Thomas, who plays MBs has a T100 for a 4i!

Jean Forget or maybe you don’t understand that mid handicappers come in many different forms. Some have great swings but have terrible short games. Some have terrible swings and are absolute sharks from 109 yds and in. Some have good all around games, but are prone to making mistakes. Etc, etc... We know from watching James’s channel that Mark has developed his swing with James, which is looking great btw, but that his approach play and short game still need work. Thus he is a mid handicap!

You can take away the bad swings on the computer but not on the golf course. That’s a 40 yard difference on a mis-hit. Forty yards! With a 7 iron! So, no, a mid handicap golfer cannot play those irons. A tour pro probably shouldn’t play those irons.
@sjgraci5 жыл бұрын
And there'd be a 40 yard difference with the I-210 if he put the same shitty swing on it.
@sloebone73995 жыл бұрын
sjgraci - The i210 is going to fly further and straighter that the Titleist on a mis-hit. It’s what they’re designed to do.
@sjgraci5 жыл бұрын
@@sloebone7399 Yeah go on believing the marketing BS. That one shot was a pure shank. There is no iron curing that. Straighter is purely on the player. Front to back dispersion is negligible in short to mid irons. Look up D-Plane. Besides, the golf course will always even mishits out. It gives and it takes. The one area game improvement in irons helps is in launch and height, particularly in longer irons. It is why many pros play cavities and utilities in their long irons and why so many who can't get the ball airborne use shovels throughout the set.
@sloebone73995 жыл бұрын
sjgraci - I believe in the laws of physics. They work. Perimeter weighting is a proven technology. Watch his Ping fitting and see what the Blue prints do. How does a golf course even out mishits?

@richardsdiaz15 жыл бұрын
1). Because blades are fun? 2). Because they are stunningly beautiful? 3) For the feedback? You can learn a lot about your swing from them. Other clubs mask your mistakes to differing extents. 4). Because you are a really long hitter and can afford to give up a little distance for that buttery feel, and feedback? They are certainly not for everybody! But there is still a place for them in the world.
