Fun fact: Jonathan Frakes is one of the rare actors who in RL actually knows how to play the instrument his character does. (in this case the trombone)

Not that rare...most actors in UK TV who play instruments specifically asked producers to include it in their character biographies. Peter Capaldi played the opening theme of Doctor Who on electric guitar for 2 episodes.

It's not all that rare. Lea Thompson can play the Guitar, just like her character Beverly Switzler. Mayim Bialik can play the harp, just like her character Amy Farrah Fowler. Johnny Galecki can play the Cello, just like his character Leonard Hofstadter.

When she slaps his arm, you can see how close this was to being a blooper. This may have been one of those times the director just threw up his hands and kept it in - the TNG cast was infamous for driving directors nuts with comedic errors and horsing around.

I always got the impression that the directors of the episodes from the third season on weren't quite as tight-sphinctered when it came to the cast's shenanigans, and were much better able to cope, and go with the flow. IIRC the directors who couldn't hack it were largely gone by the end of season two. It does lead me to wonder if the production staff started allowing the main cast members to direct an occasional episode as a way for them to better behave themselves during a shoot...

I was going to note how perfect his gesture was. Often during peacetime, opportunities for training and experience are always pressed on by leadership and good future leaders. In this case, however, it was the Cmd's goddamn birthday. His gesture at two senior workhorses was perfect for saying "whatever the fuck let's get this shit done quick."

I know it happens a lot on this series, but it is wild that there is no one else to delegate a beam down into an unknown environment on his birthday other than himself, the chief of security, and the chief engineer. And if sensors can't get a good reading, of course transporter is going to have issues. Beam down a Class V probe or something to scan and boost signal.
