Most of the critiques I see are about the scene where he's injured and how the barrel is obviously pretty light.

This was such a great scene. Riker's passionate speech and careful nuance, Worf's decision to break with tradition. Hard choices carefully thought through and acted upon.

Searching for the words to properly express how thoroughly behind Riker's words here I am. (And apparently it's turned me into Yoda.) And the fact that Worf actually turns around from it, and chooses to pursue life -- wow. This... is a good scene.

I'd forgotten how Riker got out of helping Worf perform the ritual (also seen attempted in "Night Terrors"). Sure, it's a bit contrived, but given what we've seen about Klingon culture thus far, it tracks very well.

Safety violation Alexander carrying the dagger out of their quarters by the handle. He could kill himself accidentally if he trips and falls. And Klingon or not that would not be an honorable death.

Oh, so Alexander is NOT family? Is that what you are saying, Worf? ... Furthermore, you are trying to say he is not your blood because he is QUARTER human? 4:22 Look at the klingon face of respect from Alexander there. - The irony of children's wisdom, heh. If they had unleashed their superweapon* on Worf, the script would have suffered an early but glorious end. ... *) Of course I am speaking of Guinan.

Worf knew Alexander couldn't and wouldn't do it. In his view the one failing K'Ehleyr had in raising him and his not knowing about him for 3+ years. A lot of Alexander's views on Klingon culture would be very different had Worf knew of him and raised him from the beginning. If Worf was really determined to carry out the Hegh'bat he had an option that Dr. Crusher couldn't stop even knowing why: He could have asked for a Comm Unit, hail Qo'nos and get in contact with his brother, Kurn. Kurn would know his nephew's feelings on Klingon tradition and his late sister-in-law's disdain she instilled in him on that point. He would remember his disdain for Riker and remind him yet again the Enterprise is not a Klingon ship and would threaten to kill him again. He'd rendezvous with the Enterprise, Crusher would, despite her feeling suicide is not an option, release Worf to Kurn's custody as not doing so would be a Prime Directive issue, probably take Alexander too as his closest blood relative and it would be done the moment he beamed back on his ship or shortly after arrival on Qo'nos

It's weird that they bring up Marla Aster but no one mentions her son, Jeremy, who Worf adopted into his House and made him his brother. Actually, no one mentions Jeremy *ever*.

I really dislike the framing of suicide as selfish here. I would venture to say that most people who have considered suicide have thought about the people they will leave behind. It seems more selfish to me to ask someone to live in agony because they're not willing to bear the pain of their death.

Not if you're a Klingon. As Picard pointed out, there are injuries and diseases that humans can suffer and suffer they will the remaining few days or even years of their lives in agonizing pain that death can be seen as a release from that pain.

This, (being a human show) just drips with all kinds of human sentimentality. If this were "Star War" (the Klingon version of "Star Trek") he would have committed seppuku and the rest of the show would have gone on as usual.

Not even human sentimentality, but 20th Century post-war American sentimentality. This thought process isn’t as widely held as viewers would like to believe.
