@@ShhImASpy Aaaaaand if you are really traditional and religious it will be the day when the exact Saint that is your patron that your parents chose is celebrated - e.g. Catherine of Siena or Catherine of Alexandria etc. The "name day after your birthday" is for people who didn't give an ef about that 😅

Unlike the west, here in the Central and Eastern Europe we celebrate Name Day. It's a common thing. My brother's name is Kristi. He was born in 25th of December. So he basically celebrates his name day (Kristi=Christ), Christmas and his birthday. Name day is basically the day of your name which basically comes from a Saint most of the times. The pictures painted in the Orthodox Churches walls if you have seen any. That's an example.

Stumbled across this video by accident, didn't regret it... good stuff. As I studied linguistics, I wanted to share one - kind of obscure - fun fact about polish language. We have these nasal vowels, which originate in protoslavic language: "ą" and "ę". Not many contemporary, natural languages still use those. Best modern examples of nasal phonemes are found in french and portugese. Anyway, the fun fact is, that the diacritics (those "tails" under "a" and "e") which signify it's a nasal vowel, were directly borrowed from polish language by... Navajo natives. Not many people seem to know about this. The thing is, native Americans before colonization didn't really pay much attention to the written word. For them, the most important thing for a long time was always MEMORY. If there's still at least one member of a particular tribe, who remembers their history and traditions, they're not "gone". Which is why spoken word was always of the utmost value for native Americans. Hence the tradition of peaceful gatherings of different tribes, which then exchanged their "stories". A good "story" is a most priceless gift you can give to anyone, a gift of memory. I believe traditional "pow wows" are an example of good opportunity to exchange experiences and "stories" between tribes (among other things). Sooner or later though, when confronted with europeans, even natives had to develop some form of codified, written language. And since Poles were present on American soil, during fight for American independence, it makes sense they've also had contacts with natives. In Poland we still call them "Indianie" ("Indians") by the way, because of the (in)famous mistake once made, but it's in no way offensive, it's just traditional name with no positive or negative connotations. As to the bear sitting in trench with polish soldiers - yeah, as others pointed out, it's a real thing, it was Wojtek. There was also Baśka Murmańska, a polar bear female, which was officially a part of colonel's Julian Skokowski battalion. She was actually capable of walking on her back paws and saluting like a real soldier during a military parade in 1919, in front of polish Chief of State Józef Piłsudski.

Name day, or Patron's Day, comes from the Christian tradition. Giving a name was largely associated with religion and magic in the Past. Names were believed to have power in them. If a descendant was wanted to demonstrate a certain character features, he was named after an appropriate relative or Saint. What's more you cannot give your child any name you wish in Poland. There is a special departament in every registry office in Poland that aproves the name you want to give your child (the incongruous first names are forbidden)
