I worked as an extra in "Gettysburg" which was filmed under the working title, "The Killer Angels", which was the title of the book it was based on. The scene where Gen'l. Lee was mobbed by his troops, the original wasn't shot because the camera operators were changing film. We had been promised all week that we'd get to meet some of the principal actors, but it wasn't happening. But, that afternoon, someone sent Martin Sheen riding past us. We heard the cheering up the line from us and rushed to our feet to see what was happening. When Lee appeared, we all went a little bonkers and ran out hollering and shaking his hand. He was amazed that his portrayal of Lee was so realistically received. The director was so impressed with our reaction to Lee's entrance, he got us to do it again. I didn't think the second time was as enthusiastic as the first time. The first time was a genuine reaction of delight at seeing our commanding officer because it wasn't staged.
@stigmajoshАй бұрын
That movie led me to become a reenactor as a teenager and I’ve been to Gettysburg over a dozen times.
@largol33t1Ай бұрын
Martin Sheen was sometimes known for being very strict about sticking to a character's moment of agony. In "Apocalypse Now" he probably did get a tad drunk performing Col. Willard's drunken dance where he punched a mirror. He cut his hand so badly that Francis Ford Coppola stopped the camera and shouted for a medic. However, Sheen insisted on carrying through with the entire scene. He really was bleeding when the camera cuts to the shot of him slumped in front of the bed, crying in pain. I understood the moment: war makes us all madmen, sometimes. It's never a good thing when you get sucked into it.
@largol33t1Ай бұрын
PS: despite the constant problems on set with typhoons, mixed up/missing equipment and extras being called to duty (they were real Thai army soldiers), the movie opened at #1 at the box office and raked in over $160 million worldwide, which is way over $630 million today.

I was an extra in the movie Gettysburg. I'm actually in the scene you showed the clip from. We were told to cheer Lee but almost 100% of the extras were hardcore reenactors and very knowledgeable about the war. This scene was an actual spontaneous reenactment of what happened several times during the real war when Lee rode the front lines. I don't think the director knew about this and hadn't planned for it, but we the reenactors just naturally did it.

@NextExiterАй бұрын
This is an interesting collection of shots that were mostly planned or molded, with a lot of mythology, and a bit of lying. As for Carrey, yeah when you're comic acting, you're hoping to fall in a funny way. So he didn't know exactly how he would fail to land, but he intended to fail. Then afterwards you say something like "My foot totally missed the desk!" which is true, but not actually surprising.
