Both versions (SNES & Genesis) are solid. SNES - the ability to toss foot clan into the screen is awesome. The stage layout / story is better too Genesis - Mikey is 10x better to play with on Genesis than SNES, due to his extended range of attack with his nunchucks (which makes Mike more arcade-accurate on Genesis). On SNES, his range is limited.

@VicariouslyRetro Turning this option to manual makes it so that you have to double tap the d pad. There never was a dedicated run button for Turtles in Time. It drives me nuts when I watch online gameplay of Hyperstone Heist because nobody ever effectively used the run button in this game. If you take the time to learn all the attacks, the run button is like playing the game on steroids. ( It's always been my assumption that the SNES version didn't use a run button because it might have made the game a bit too easy.)

The colors in the sega version pops a lot more. Its much more vibrant. The controls are also better, with an actual button for running instead of having to press two times forward (which for some reason does not always work). Being able to throw foot soldiers into the screen gets old FAST. Its so pixiladed and ugly. The snes version is also way to easy. Not everyone who playes video games are 5 years old. The only thing better in the snes version is the voices. Love the levels and bosses in the sega version. So cool that they used characters from both the cartoon, comic book and live action movies. The "hyper stone" idea is also borrowed from the comics. Such a nod to the fans. For me there were several games I've always wanted but could never get as a kid. TMNT Hyperstone Heist was on the list, sure. But there was also The Death And Return Of Superman(SNES version), Robocop Vs Terminator(Genesis version), Lobo(Never released, but the roms are available for both SNES and Genesis and I got repro carts of those games) and of course SPLATTERHOUSE! Well I managed to buy the best version of Splatterhouse at the time, which was the Windows PC version. Sadly this was a Japanese only port and I can only buy it via eBay. It was unlockable for the Xbox 360 and PS3 version of Splatterhouse. It's playable on Namco Museum Arcade Pac for the Switch. I have all four versions because that's how much I love Splatterhouse. Would have gotten the PC Engine version, but holy crap that's too pricey. It took my adult years to own these games I've always wanted. Which reminds me, I even managed to buy Batman Forever The Arcade Game for the PS1. That was even harder to obtain, but I bought it for cheap thanks to eBay.

There's quite a few reasons why hyperstone heist in my opinion is better first of all how they did it they went with less stages but longer ones, though it pretty much feels like the level length in turtles in time is the same it just has twice as many stages which honestly by the time you get to the prehistoric stage it just becomes frustrating and it's not even fun. Honestly turtles in Time sucks compared to hyperstone heist it's just long enough to where it's a challenge but not too long to where it gets boring the music is really good and it's not insanely difficult to where you have to turn it to easy just to get to the end like on turtles in time now granted I suck at video games but still there's a point to where it's just not fun. Best way to play hyperstone heist is co-op. Hyperstone heist on normal actually feels like normal where is turtles in Time the normal difficulty feels like difficult. All of this said to be fair, the first four level of turtles in time are really fun even on normal. How I usually play it as I just play it up to about that point then stop. Level 4 is especially fun where you have that crazy boss fight against shredder

THH objectively has better control schemes than Turtles in Time. Mapping run to a button rather than a double tap makes the action far, FAR more fluid!
@inceptional12 күн бұрын
I 100% disagree. I think the double tap in the direction you want to run is a far more natural motion that corresponds much better with the actual action you're performing. Think of pushing a button to punch or actually punching to punch in VR, and which would you say is a better implemented version there. Well Turtles in Time's implementation of dash is closer to the later than the Genesis pressing a button method imo. This ain't like holding the button to run in Super Mario Bros.; it's like double tapping to dash in Virtua Fighter or Streets of Rage 2 for example. So, yeah, I think Turtles in Time does it better than Hyperstone Heist. And then everything else is better in Turtles in Time too imo, be it the graphics, music, level designs, bosses, overall gameplay, etc. So Turtles in Time is just the superior game, and most serious critics agree.
@VicariouslyRetro12 күн бұрын
I think both games have great control shcemes. THH def plays a little fast and seems more fluid for sure, but Turtles in Time is also amazing on how they did it too. Like I said at the end of the video, I do think Turtles in time is the better game overall, I just love the tougher challege and more aggressive AI that THH offers
@inceptional12 күн бұрын
@@VicariouslyRetro I'm playing them both back to back as I type, switching inputs on my TV so I can play one right after the other back and forth, and I'm not noticing where HH moves faster or seems more fluid. I'm not sure what some other people are picking up here. Can you point out where you're finding it faster and more fluid for sure, like something that's specifically making the difference as you see/feel it? Because I still think double tapping on the d-pad to run and pressing the Y button to do a dash attack there, without having to take my right thumb finger away from either the action or jump button, feels more fluid and intuitive to taking my finger off A or B and moving it to C to dash, and then back to A again to do a dash attack. I also really love just rocking my thumb up/down between punch and jump on SNES (Y and B), rather than having to take it off A to press B on Genesis. Although, I think if your fingers are big enough then rocking your thumb left/right is fine there too. Similarly, I like that I can assign the special attack to a single button on SNES rather than having to press two buttons at the same time to activate it. But on that I think both basically work out the same, with one requiring a bit more deliberate timing to make sure you nail it and the other requiring moving your finger away from the other action buttons again. So either or, just with me preferring the single button so I don't ever do it by mistake while trying to press attack and jump quickly and waste a bit of energy unintentionally. And the weapons also have visual swish effects on SNES, the hit connect sound is much punchier and forceful, and each hit actually produces a little hit flash sprite too, which just makes each hit and therefore the overall combat more satisfying for me personally on SNES too. They maybe just forgot to add those things there on Genesis. Throwing enemies towards the screen on SNES also never gets old for me personally. It's just so satisfying and fun. And it's very cool that they even use it in one of the boss fights too, so it's not just merely a throwaway visual gag--no pun intended. And right now I have the game on hard on SNES and died in like about a minute while just faffing around there, so the game is definitely hard enough for me personally. I'm not exactly trying to play a flawless run, just testing some of the controls for the sake of my opinion and comments here, but I'm getting my ass handed to me. 😲 But, yeah, as standard I can see that HH is more challenging the Turtles in Time. So, if you like your gaming harder, I can see how that would play to your preferences there. If you specifically like more of a challenge, have you given yourself the challenge of getting through the SNES game on hard without taking a single hit? I think that would be potentially quite difficult and something to give you a nice personal challenge to aim for if you like your game harder. I don't think I'd ever play the game enough to get that good.

7:45 Shiiiiiit...assuming that your local arcade had it set to a quarter per game, three bucks was absolutely a lot of money!! 🤣 8:31 ...ayo hol' up, you still had a *WORKING* Atari 2600 in 1992!? My Atari 5200 was done for by 1990!! (Then again, the poor ol' girl showed signs of fading well before then, and none of my tinkering could save her) 9:52 ...yeah, this is why I made sure to keep myself in the loop as much as possible so I could point out EXACTLY what I wanted to my mom. Although there were a few cases where she pulled some black magic or SOMETHING. TMNT 1, TMNT 3 (I got TMNT 2 from a buddy), Ninja Gaiden, and especially Megaman 6!? I never asked for those (I largely didn't even think to ask), and bam, she got those for me. 11:11 Huh. That's a tough call. I got Super Mario Bros. 3 when I was in middle school...as mentioned above, I got Turtles 2 from a buddy...despite some playtime of Sonic 1 with younger cousins, I never had any real interest in the Genesis until I started dating my eventual wife (and even then, I'm still more partial to Sonic 1 while she's bigger on Sonic 2 and up)...so idk, can't really say that there was anything as a kid...though there were a few things in my late teens & early 20s that eluded me, and I don't mean stuff like Japanese games.😮 (Example: the Snes port of Street Fighter Alpha 2 I ain't get until the early 2000s at what was then Funcoland - I hadn't even gotten a Snes until 1998, so I naturally missed SFA2's initial retail run in 1996-97; I later traded it in, only to get the Japanese Super Famicom version a few years after that.)

Haha yea, I was given $3 and used it right up. Yup! My Atari 2600 still works to this day. Granted the joystocks are completely shot, but the console and the games are still in good condition. I just hook up old Sega Genesis controllers and it works great. I never owned a 5200, but those were notrious for being poorly made. Solid games to get! Especially Ninja Gaiden and Megaman 6. How was the SNES port? I have that game on the Saturn and its amazing
@DragoonMSКүн бұрын
@@VicariouslyRetro 5200s were poorly made?? Wow...never heard anything about that. Mine only went out over some time because bugs had got to it and pretty much ate it up from within. The console, that is. *I* abused the joysticks, usually from throwing them in rage. (I hate Centipede, I hate most of the game options in Super Breakout, I hate the higher levels of Pac-Man, and I especially hate the Normal & Hard settings of Joust cuz that stupid Pterodactyl that pops up every eighth level is wildly inconsistent and hard to take down) It was pretty good despite the cuts that had to be made to get it on there at all. NO Evil Ryu and because of programming screwups, the playable Shin Akuma was left hidden for a couple decades...so hidden that not even Nintendo knew how to get him. And speaking of programming screwups, whoooooo boy...because of poorly handled sound compression - something else revealed decades after the fact - there's like five second load times almost everywhere!! Craziest thing is that we're about to run right smack into the 30th Anniversary of SFA1 in 2025 and the 30th Anniversary of both SFA2 & X-Men vs. Street Fighter in 2026.😮😮😮😮😮 Speaking of the Saturn...I never had the vanilla SFA2 for it, only SFA2 Gold from Street Fighter Collection, that added in an alternate color palette for Sakura (givin' her a whopping 12 color options), SF2 Champion Edition style peeps (no super meter and limited movesets), and a playable Cammy (her sprites ripped straight from XvSF), and that was pretty epic. Oh, and it had an even simpler method to select Shin Akuma & Evil Ryu, which carried over to the PSone version of SFC & SFA2 Gold.

my only problem with the genesis version is that there were way too many stages without bosses. you would be fighting on levels that felt extra long and then at the end you would move onto the next area, other than that I loved hyperstone heist. Oh and yeah no mode 7 so no throwing foot soldiers at the screen
@BigBillKelly-x2z11 күн бұрын
It's a misconception that TIT used mode 7 to get the footsoldiers into the screen effect. It actually used a different background layer and used two animation frames to fake the zoom in effect. The Snes having an extra background layer came in handy to pull this effect off.

I think Hyperstone Heist has aged worse, I liked it more as a kid. The last time I played Hyperstone Heist it reached a point after the boss rush where I just wanted the game to end. The lack of diverse bosses fails to break up the long stages. To throw in a boss rush like that to try to compensate frustrates me. This game needed more developmental love, it feels like a lazy combo of the two arcade games and one movie asset. It would have been nice to see a beat em up completely inspired by the first few movies.

Ironically I had the opposite experience. Managed to get a used copy of Hyperstone Heist from Funcoland in 1993 when my mom got me a Genesis for Christmas. Of course K-Mart, Toys R Us and Kaybee were all out of new copies. I lucked out that year and snagged After Burner as well. Years later after moving out into my own house I went a head and bought a SNES clone along with Turtles in Time and a couple other titles from a local retro game shop. I loved Hyperstone Heist as a kid, but my cousins who owned a SNES said it was too short and wondered why you couldn’t throw enemies at the screen. The problem with HH is that the grabbing is too rare and random. In the TT you hit once and there is a quick moment that you can grab. Basically a remixed amalgamation of the TMNT '89 arcade game & Turtles In Time wrapped around a new story. To say that I was INCREDIBLY excited when this was announced is a GARGANTUAN understatement. An all new turtles game for Sega systems!? Hell yeah! Though after playing and beating it I couldn't help but feel a TINY bit disappointed as this all new game was actually an "all new" game. Don't get me wrong, H.H is still decent, but it really does feel like a "cut & paste" rush job cobbled together just so that Sega owners could have something TMNT related. It honestly could have been much better if Konami would have done an all new original game. Also, why is Bebop nowhere to he found yet Rocksteady is in the game? It's Bebop AND Rocksteady. Very fun video. Yeah, I can relate to a lot of that. The cartoon, the first movie, all very classic. Somehow I didn't end up with exposure to either of the 16 bit games but the NES games were huge to me. I remember getting TMNT2 for my birthday and feeling very cool and I definitely convinced myself it looked almost as good as the arcade and was probably better overall for including the extra levels. I also got 3 a few years later and that was also outstanding and by that point I think I had embraced the first as well. I think I just had bad timing with TMNT and 16 bit. I got my Genesis Christmas 94 so that was after two pretty miserable to terrible movies and my interest was lessened though I still think I would have picked up Hyperstone Heist if I saw it on the shelves but never did. I do remember seeing Turtles in Time for sale and more advertising for that and I was definitely jealous. It's nice to be an adult and have both though I can't convince my wife to play for more than a level so I don't really get to take advantage of the two player co op that we did as kids. I know it's a bootleg but Shredder's Re Revenge uses the Streets of Rage 2 music and background and has all the turtles along with Casey, April and Splinter as playable characters all with unique move sets and is a really really good time as well. I'd recommend checking it out if you haven't already.
