I don't ride because I am brave, and I overcame the fear of riding so many of us experience. It is logical to be afraid. I ride because I had more and more moments while riding that made me forget that I was afraid, and eventually, those happy moments overshadowed the fear. But the fear is still there. Fear is not the enemy - fear keeps us safe. Fear keeps us alive. And I'd really like for you to stay safe and alive.

Listen, I have been riding now 35+ years. Of course taking breaks off of riding for a year or two at a time but it wasnt because I was to scared to ride, I just didn't either have the time, or the money at the time. I think you nailed it on this video! Even being a veteran rider for all these years I am still nervous, still scared, when I approach my bike. Am I afraid to get on it? NO! This is called "RESPECTING" your bike and yourself as well as others. This fear is what keeps you alive and alert! It makes the difference between riding home and ending up in a body bag or hospital. I typically ride 75 to 80mph on a 4 lane hwy because that's what the flow of traffic expects out of us drivers in California. Don't be afraid to ride, just be fearful of what could happen if you disrespect your bike and the conditions! I ride a 2019 FXBR Breakout. Though its fast, and I no its a fast bike there is no need to prove it was careless over the top speeding like I see so often on the road! Always remember that we out there are the prey. Not the predator! Good video.

How to raise the back wheel of a bike with a side stand only: Take some string and tie the hand brake to the handle bar so that the front wheel is "braked". Take one car scissor jack and place it under the footpeg boss on the R-Hand side of the bike. You might need some blocks of wood to fill the gaps to start with. Jack the bike up until the back wheel is clear of the ground. Make sure the bike is steady. Gently spin the back wheel and oil the chain. Take all necessary safety precautions.

John Few my riding instructor just used to lean the bike on the side stand and use his shoulder to lean the bike further over and lifting the back wheel off the ground while still supported on the side stand. He then gave the wheel a spin with the wheel off the ground and oiled the chain. Job done. He made it look so easy. If I tried that the bike would be a wreck on the floor.

Being somewhat scared while riding keeps you sharp. I personally am not scared of my riding alone. I always have a level being somewhat scared. Or maybe it is just overly alert. Because of all the cagers in their cars. Most accidents are caused by other drivers. And the skill level of the rider to be able to avoid an accident. But like you said. Gear up and ride smart. Doodle, in order to oil or clean the chain get a large crescent wrench and place the hole around the bolt head on the right side (opposite kickstand) and place the open end on the ground. Fear is healthy. It reminds us of the risk we're taking and the consequences if we make a mistake. If we believe we learn and grow everyday, then we know that we don't know everything. And riding requires all our knowledge and senses to be on high alert. As you get older and more seasoned as a rider the fear will lessen but it will always be there to some degree. God bless and stay safe.

There are so many helpful parallels with diving and riding. My diving experience helped a lot when I started riding. Slow and smooth. Keep training to practice and build skills. Always be aware of your surroundings. Your gear is your life - always wear proper gear and keep it in good order. BWRF = TCLOCS. For both, fear became a healthy respect and over time, one can thoroughly enjoy each. I love being in the open water and on the open road. Being in Canada, I’ve also learned to do both in the cold. In a perfect world, I’ll figure how to dive and ride at the same time 😀

Funny thing, I watched this video not extremely long after it was posted. I've wanted a motorcycle most of my life, and about two years ago I decided to stop wanting, stop wondering, and make it a goal. So ... my first motorcycle is sitting in the garage now, I have the MSF course scheduled in a couple of weeks, and ... right now, it's eating me up wanting to just go out for a ride. I'm seriously considering just going tomorrow. The road I live on is a cut-through between twisty neighborhood roads where people love to speed through blind turns, and a main road with a fast enough speed limit and even faster speeders that most people wouldn't really recommend riding as a first time out. But I don't have many more options besides the driveway, or trailering the bike somewhere just to unload and practice, load up and come back, unload and hope I don't screw it up any of those times. I think that's going to be my first time out, and I'll start finding places where I can practice slow-speed stuff. Am I scared to go ride? Yeah. I've never ridden a motorcycle besides putting around in the driveway and duck-walking U-turns. So, it'll be an experience. I'm debating how far, which route, and the like. But early on a Sunday morning should hopefully have quiet enough traffic with people getting ready for church, or otherwise sleeping in or whatever.

To clean the chain, you can squat on the stand side of the bike and grab onto the seat. Pull the bike towards you, against the stand, and the rear wheel should pop up. It sounds precarious, but the bike won't be at risk of falling if you pull it over just enough to get the wheel off the ground. Spin the wheel with your other hand and put the bike down. Works great!

I have an easy fix for your chain lube dilemma. My FZ-07 is the same way; they cut a lot of corners to save cost and weight. You can lift the back wheel off the ground for chain lubrication pretty easily with just a block of wood. I use a 1x6 that's 12.5" long, but almost anything like a 2x4 by 13" will do. Stand by the right rear and push the bike up onto the side stand, lifting the rear wheel an inch or two off the ground. You're no weakling; you CAN do this! Slip the wood block between the end of the swing arm and the ground so that it just clears the side of the tire. You can now spin it freely for cleaning and lubrication. I do this all the time. I built a modified form of the Abba Superbike Stand when I need both wheels off the ground, but the wood block is all I use for chain maintenance because it takes maybe 20 seconds.

I also recommend getting some good aux low beam lamps like my 2x Rigid LED SAE/DOT lowbeam modular lights which basically give a whole bunch of extra lumens on the road without blinding oncoming traffic. My AT has the factory LED main low/high, and with the 2 extra LED lowbeam aux lights it produces a very wide beam and lights up from ditch to ditch (or sidewalk to sidewalk)... I ride at night all the time with this setup and it gives much more confidence. I usually leave them on during daytime too to add visibility for other traffic to see me better.

I have to admit, after a year and a half on a bike my fear is still the same: not that I'll get hurt or something but that I'll destroy my bike and won't be able to afford a new one anytime soon. That thought is always at the back of my mind when riding. There was just one time, I was stuck in a traffic for some part of my trip and was running late for a ferry on a road that I know well. That was the only time that I rode thinking about nothing except what corner is next, where to brake, when to turn in and when to accelerate. Those 25 minutes were the best minutes of my "riding career" and even though I was exhausted after that I was smiling from ear to ear.

Boy are you right about that, and that what I didn’t have to help me, my first big crash was having been ejected from the bike after a horrific woobles from landing a wheely at around 160/ 180 km/h, broken spines at 3 places and the biggest pain I’ve ever felt from a broken sacrum ( damn that hurts ), and when I recover all my friends were wondering first if I would get back on a bike and mostly is it would affect my riding styles, in my minds I had absolutely no doubts simply can’t wait to get back, and when I did at the first stop signs I pull off a breakwheely ( that I regretted so much because when landing the breakwheely as the back wheel makes contact with the road the suspension does its work and rebound from the street witch = in having a bit of a kick in the ass) maybe I was ok to rides but the kick in the ass was very painful still, but it made everybody laughs, then almost 9 years later in a tunnel I got into many cars rumble and happen to rear end the car in front of me fly over 2 other car and made the perfect landing in a Chrysler Pacifica, I alone scraps the Chrysler and I managed to died in doing so, but I’m kinda of the long line of Wolverine so I got a bit of the mutant genes so I always healed and way faster than normal peoples ( and that was explains to me by my doctors 😂) and 5 years a gas truck literally ran me over ( guess he didn’t see me ) and left me for dead on the side of the road, witch I was again ( officially I’ve died 3 times but unofficially it’s way more often then that ), everybody’s keep asking me aren’t you scared, and I just replied thèmes Would do be really scared if you knew you always get back up in a nick of times ? 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I don't fear my tablesaw, but I give that tool the respect and attention it requires while in use. I also am aware of my own safety boundaries and surroundings as well. Instinct, otherwise known as intuition, is an animal trait and humans are animals. Fear may or may not be (but usually is) part of the instinctual "nudge" one gets. Unfortunately, humans suffer from a horrible and additional trait - denial. Other animals don't do this. Does the cat wait to justify fear of the vacuum when it comes on? Nope. Homeboy is gone. If one denies their instincts long enough, they become deaf to them. Something very important to remember is that it doesn't matter if you know why something feels off or wrong. What does matter is that you listen to and obey it. It is there for a reason and for your well being. Sometimes we must override our fear such as helping someone during an accident, fire, threat of physical harm from someone, or whatever. In normal circumstances though, my points remain.

IMHO you should never have any fear or be tense when riding, Doodle. You're aware you are more vulnerable as a motorcyclist, so you should ride more defensively that you might drive a car for instance. And you can remain as risk adverse as you believe is commensurate with your experience and comfort level. But that is totally different to fear, which has no place in a potential dangerous environment like the road. If ever you want some free advanced training, just let me know.

Riding a bike when you are genuinely frightened/scared is NOT good. Fear makes you tense and more rigid. When you are tense and rigid you cannot control your bike as well as when you are relaxed. Your balance may also be impaired. In fact I do not ride if I am apprehensive not feeling confident or I have a lot on my mind to distract me. Also I try not to ride in bad wet whether as this makes me nervous and my control goes haywire and I end up riding dreadfully, well dreadfully on my scale. I am still a safe rider. Being genuinely scared on a bike is NOT good. It does not keep people alive. You confuse scared with being prudent.

If you ever get on a bike and start to pull away and feel fear-less, meaning you have no fear of the consequences in what you are doing... Stop. Get off the bike and don't ride again. Keep the training going. Its the same reason why airline pilots with 40 years of experience and tens of thousands of hours in the cockpit have to prove their are competent and take training, EVERY YEAR! As a p.s., chains are so 20th Century. Don't understand why all bikes haven't gone to shaft drives like Honda's and Yamaha...

Richard Mourdock Chains are the most efficient and practical means of power transmission - and the cheapest. Maintaining the chain is part of the whole motorcycling experience. Also a shaft drive solves one problem, but creates others, like torque effects, hugely expensive repairs and catastrophic failure.

@@lrowlands53 An excellent engineering answer, I am sure. But having owned five bikes with shafts (three Hondas and two Yamahas), the only maintenance I've had is to change the rear drive oil every thirty-thousand miles. I will accept that task as "part of the whole motorcycling experience" and gladly focus on the travel experience and not worry about chain tension, oiling it, cleaning it, etc. especially when I ride in the dust of the desert and do a few water crossings elsewhere. Will grant you the initial cost of putting a shaft drive on a bike vs. a chainis probably more, part of the "new" purchase price but don't know anyone who has ever had one fail catastrophically or otherwise. Appreciate your thought and comment though.

If you find yourself in this position again, try this: Sit on your butt facing the bike with your left leg forward of the kickstand and the right leg behind the kickstand. Have your steering locked and grab the left hand grip with your left hand and grab somewhere on the frame or seat area and lean the bike to you slightly. The bike will teeter on the kickstand and front tire and the rear wheel will come off the ground. Then you can use your right foot to turn the rear wheel around until you get to a section of chain that you haven't cleaned yet. It might take a bit of practice to get the feel for it, but once you do it a few times it can come in handy. Not recommended for any bike over about 500 lbs though. BE CAREFUL NOT TO PULL THE BIKE OVER ON YOURSELF!

For me the fear and excitement of riding go hand in hand. When I swing my leg over the bike I sometimes wonder if today could be the day I wreck. And then when I pull back into the garage after the ride, I get a satisfied feeling that once again I pulled it off without a hitch. When I'm riding a lot, everything about controlling the bike becomes so automatic that I "forget" to be afraid, and then I kind of slap myself and say, "don't get complacent, this iron horse can hurt you bad if you lose your focus".

One thing that really helped me feel more comfortable riding was switching to high-vis gear. It's so rare that other vehicles cut me off or encroach on my space now that it's genuinely a relief. Before there were just too many times where cars wouldn't see me approaching an intersection and you're constantly on edge hoping they don't go. Sure it doesn't look "cool" but who cares -- riding is more enjoyable and my chances of going home at the end of the day are much improved.

Doodle... knowledge is power. The more you learn about riding safety, accident statistics , etc , the less fearful you will become. What you develop, is a healthy respect for the sport. Once I had all of that ingrained , it was just a matter of wearing the right gear, always riding with the high beam on (during the day), using lane discipline to my advantage (when to stay on the right side or the left side of center) , keeping speeds to a sporty (5-10 over) but not reckless max , checking mirrors while slowing down (to make sure the cagers behind are also slowing) , and basically riding like I am invisible to everyone ( read: very defensively). I also never rode at night --except maybe 1/4 mile up the road to a convenience store. Other people don't see you as well ,you can't see the road surface as well, and the threat of animals (especially deer and other night creatures) is typically higher. I'm glad to see that you have such a good attitude about riding. Keep it up! :^)

I have been addicted to riding bicycles since I was six. So the seeds were sown as far as riding is concerned. But my parents reinforced from a very young age the two main evils of society were smoking cigarettes and motorcycling because they knew I would end up doing both. In my twenties I bought a BMW 325i sedan and drove that thing to its limits quite frequently because it was fun and I had no fear of dying. I'm surprised I didn't. But I knew if I rode motorcycles the same way I drove cars, I would die in the most spectacular way possible. Thus I put off what I really wanted to do. I have since chilled out a little. I am not afraid of the bike. But I always have to remain cognizant of who I am and to tone it down because IT FEELS SO GOOD TO GO SO FAST. Be safe, stay in your lane, don't succumb to your dumbest urges, and you will be fine. That is my advice to me to stay alive.

First time I rode my bike, other than test riding. Was home from the dealership, on the highway ... at night. As I left the dealership I realized I was about to go on a 70 MPH road, on a new to me bike with no real "speed time" above 55. I'd pulled 100 once or twice, but only to run up,see it, and roll off the throttle. And now I was about to run 70+ for 15-20 minutes in the dark. When the warning light went on I freaked for a second until I realized I was just low on fuel. First rain ride, a huge downpour from a storm system that made better time than expected. Took an extra 20 minutes to get home and I was a drowned rat that knew at any second the rear tire was going lose traction and send me sliding (but I bought better tires and rain is just a nuisance, but it does wash off the heavy dirt). A little fear can help, remind you you're out at your limits, even if the bike has more to give. But if you're too fearful to act, then you might want to take the car or the bus.
Everything I've learned in 5 years of riding in 25 minutes
