People like to blame the media for problems they can't control. Just like the ongoing problem parents have with videogames and violence. There are trigger warnings for a reason in shows like 13 Reasons. No one just randomly decides to kill themselves after watching a show like that. More likely they've had a problem way before they watched the show. The more we censor topics like these, the worse it's gonna get for future generations.

One of my uncles suffered from anorexia. He had always been thin, but after my grandmother died, he stopped eating. The whole family would try everything to get him to eat, and he flatly refused. Finally, one time, part of my family traveled to Mexico. We went into this restaurant where they bring you these huge sizzling grills of steak fajitas with vegetables. No one has their own plate. No one is keeping track of how much everyone is eating. You just grabbed a tortilla, and made your own taco and ate it. Add lemon, salsa and guacamole and eat it. Well, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that my uncle was also eating! He was laughing, talking and eating! He was cured. He is still pretty thin, but he does eat more. My mom cooks for him often.

You know what I hate about people hating this movie? If no one talks about it, is wrong. If someone wants to talk about it, is wrong. Netflix is just showing that not all stories are about happy people, with happy life. This is so important, especially for moms who doesn't know that their child is suffering of this mental illness, they'll see how they actually act and will be able to tell if they're in anorexia or not. And give them the help they need. No matter how Netflix decides to tell the story, is great that finally there is someone (with big influence in ALL the society) talking about it.

I defeated anorexia about 6 months ago and I'm glad to see Netflix doing this. People would make fun of me and throw candy at me and say: "Look out! It has sugar" and when I tried to eat ice cream, they'd say: "Are you sure about that? It's just gonna make you fat." So of course I wouldn't eat the ice cream. It's funny how people don't really understand that this is something you can barely control. But in the end I of course got some help and I'm doing pretty fine. But what I hated the most was when trying to gain weight again, people would always hug me to see if I had any fat on my body and it really pissed me off.

I agree that everyone's experiences are different. My comment was about hoping the film wouldn't GENERALISE EATING DISORDERS WITH THE USUAL CLICHES DEPICTED IN MEDIA.

you're right my bad. I just know some people are gonna say that it was cliche or that it wasn't an accurate depiction when it is an accurate depiction of THEIR experiences. basically to simplify what I am trying to get across is watch with an open mind and know that this is 2 real sufferers take on eating disorders whether it seems cliche and too much like it is "portrayed in the media" or not. which I really don't understand anyway because the major issue is that ED aren't displayed or educated on at all, that's where people begin to make judgements and assumption when really it is an individualized disease

Ronnie Esdias trust me. If I could eat I would. Do you seriously think I want to be so unhealthy. Eating Disorders are real and they suck. It isn't always about the food. It's trying to run away from your problems. Like growing up when you were abused. A way to hurt yourself because you feel like you are a screw up. Food just so happens to be the one thing we feel like we can control. Telling us to "just eat" won't help. You are building to the stigma and making it hard for people to get help. Eating Disorders are one of the biggest death tolls in mental illnesses. I have been suffering from Bulimia since I was 12. I just started getting help this year and I am now 17. Do you seriously think I wanted to spend my spring break in an residential for my eating disorder? Eating disorders are real. So if you want to say what you said again, do some research first honey.

I’m watching the movie right now. I’m only at the part where she is being examined and doesn’t know how to answer the doctor’s question, and she stutters, and he just says, “A long time ago,” and looks at her. That touched me so much, the doctor is so sweet and understanding, and from what I can tell so far, he has worked with young girls like her before❤️

in love with this. after struggling with this terrible disorder for two years, i'm so happy to see people shining the light on it. it is so so important to know that there is help out there. without being in a recovery program, I wouldn't be here today. bravo to Lily for embodying this disease and portraying it in the way she does. ❤️

Great to see a movie exploring this subject and hopefully it will inspire people to get help. Fuck you if you're trying to censor this because it could be 'triggering'. You sit around waiting for someone to raise 'awareness', as soon as a big company and production team including a director and actor who've suffered from eating disorders make a movie you want to boycott it.

as long as it ends in recovery, it's fine. 13RW ended in revenge suicide that inspired others to kill themselves the same way. as long as this ends in her recovering and being happier for it, it'll be fine. if it ends in her not recovering and being happy about it, it'll be a different story. we'll see when it comes out.

This movie was really comforting. Dealing with another illness but very relatable. Hitting rock bottom sometimes helps an individual come to the realization that no matter what issues/problems/challenges/opportunities u are facing , life must continue. We must experience that which is negative in order to appreciate that which is positive. And in the end, the "negative" was actually a positive disguised. Only for today!!... Because yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today...well today ...is what u want it to be. Stay blessed up everybody. One love.

My mom had anorexia and I didn’t even noticed. It’s sad bc I always told myself “if I see someone struggling with an ED I will try to help them” but when my mom had it it didn’t occur to me that she could be sick; she ate very little and exercised a lot, she even told me she was starting to throw up her food but then he fell pregnant. This movie helped me understand what ppl with ED go through and how it’s not fun or beautiful. My mom could’ve died and I’m so glad she didn’t and she recovered. She gained weight and ig the ED never really went away she’s always talking about how she wants to be skinny and in a way she portrays her thoughts into my sister and I but I try no to say anything about weight or her body bc why should I.

It did show how she improved. In the beginning she went in with the mindset that this doctor was going to "fix" her. In the end she walks in with the mindset that she wants to get better and is going to try. How could they have showed her recovery? When healing from a mental illness there are setbacks, relapses, bad days and they happen for the rest of your life. The only way for the movie to show her recovery would be to show her whole life, the movie would have to go on forever. I think the ending was perfect.

I've wanted to watch this movie for a while now. But with my struggles of having an eating disorder, I was afraid to watch it. Last night I watched it for the first time. Because I want to be healthy and willing to fight for it. My eyes were glued to the screen. Near the end when she faints, she and Lucas are looking down from the tree.....when it showed her body, I NEVER felt anything hit me so hard. The fear I had of that's me, if I don't start fighting to defeat this. It scared the shit out of me and you realize skinny will never be enough. It was motivating to get help. But you have to want help and be willing to fight. That's what the movie is about. If you aren't willing to really get healthy at this time DO NOT watch because it is very triggering. But if you are willing to fight then it should motivate you. Prayers for all who are struggling. My heart is with you. ❤️

I've suffered from an Eating Disorder for 20+ years and this trailer touched me like no other media has before. Many biographies and autobiographies have devoted themselves to the subject but putting it into film is a vastly tricky business to manoeuvre. Although I was treated in the UK, where treatment is usually on wards rather than 'homes' the camaraderie that occurs within these places will stay with us for the rest of our lives, and many of the friends we make will stay with us, if not in voice then in memory. Although each experience is unique, I look forward to seeing what this film has to display as to the experience of someone suffering from a severe eating disorder in a vastly heightened environment. Any insight into the nightmare is welcome. Despite best efforts I've been suffering with an eating disorder (Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder) for 20 years now and still the suffering of those in the midst of an eating disorder are ignored, trivialised or put aside. You deserve more. Don't suffer.

This film always makes me feel seen! It’s not patronizing and it does not glamorize eating disorders. I’ve always relied on “For The Love Of Nancy” and “Sharing The Secret” to watch a movie that I can relate to when it comes to eating disorders and To The Bone brought something completely new and beautiful.
@Sabbie2417 жыл бұрын
"Movies and TV shows like 13 Reasons Why and To the Bone are glamorizing the issue" Bullshit. If people have been affected by specific struggles, a movie or a book about that specific struggle will *always* bring a part of the viewers past back up. That is completely normal and as someone who has suffered from many mental illnesses in the past, you simply are aware that movies like these could trigger something in you. That's simply a part of recovery and that doesn't make a movie shitty and it sure as hell isn't the fault of the actors and producers. "It's romanticizing the issue" there will always be stupid, young kids who will look at something dangerous and glamorize it for their tumblr blog. It's always been that way and it's not the movie's fault. I'm really sick of people jumping on the "it's glamorizing" train. Everyone always wanted movies that bring awareness. Now you have them and everyone's bitching around? The problem isn't the movie. The problem is your way of thinking, my friend.

@@wonk287 i’m currently gonna be treated at a different mental health facility and i had an interview there last week. they asked me if i had a suicide plan (which i do) and before i answered they said that i have to want to live or otherwise they can’t have me. so i didn’t tell them i have a suicide plan and now i’m stuck with this secret. the whole point is to make the patient want to live. saying this kind of stuff is only harmful.
@wonk2873 жыл бұрын
@@juju-kn6rx i'm sorry that you're going through that, but these are two different situations. the girl in this movie (its been so long since i've seen the movie but i think it was Ellen?) was going through an eating disorder and it was obvious that she knew she was going to die. The doctor, who was attempting to treat her for her eating disorder, knew that she knew she was slowly killing herself. At that point, his tactic was to kind of instigate some "trouble" in a sense, or to get a reaction from her to kind of bring her back down to reality. That was how I personally interpreted it. I understand it can be harmful, but that's life. We can't be allowed to sit and wallow, we have to be given a firm (not cruel, but firm) hand to guide us back to a routine or a way of life that will help us learn and grow, and get better. The main difference between your scenario and hers was that the doctor knew very well that she was pretty much suicidal. At that point she wasn't caring, and needed to have an abrupt awakening. Regardless of whether it worked, I personally think his way was unique(ish) and was a good one, at least in theory. I'm not a psychologist, and I won't pretend to be one, but I really thought that was quite a different approach than most have to treating kids or adults with eating disorders.
