I didn't expected you would like ragas . It's very very difficult to sing. And the 21st century singers are so focused in pop, hip-hop, I thought you would not like that type of song. It's a shame to us that even some Indians don't like ragas, and they react like " What the hell". But only real music lover and singers loves raga.💐💐 It's our culture, I love it and proud too

The instrument she’s playing (on her lap) is called Swaramandal. It is very easy to go off scale for Indian classical singers because they sing the notes very fast. And this instrument helps the singers to stay on scale. They tune the instrument according to the melodic scale also know as Raagam or Raag and when they play it, the sound coming out from the instrument will help singers to not go off scale. When the sound of the instrument doesn’t match with the singing, they will know that they are not on scale and they’ll correct it.

It is also the "math". The math of staying within that bar (aavartan as we call it) , creating the notes as she goes and yet staying within the confines of the raaga is what take tremendous practice and repetition. The natural ability is the voice, her range maybe but the math takes some working on.

On an average, 20-30 years of training and practice! Apart from the nuances of introduction and main theme, the extent of the later interpretations of a musical presentation are pure spontaneous interpretation..with an endless repertoire of content and style. Precious..to say the least. The magic of Indian classical music.

@@somnathchakrabarti8453 I think you should see how ignorant you were, you are the one that needs to educate yourself. He/she was complimenting the performance in just one word ( that word means something which is extremely good). He/she was not claiming that word to be what Kaushiki ji was singing, and you just called him/her illiterate for no reason. Also Shashi Tharoor is an Indian polititian who also has immense knowledge and control over English and that is the reason why the other guy was referring to him as Shashi Tharoor as he used one of the longest English word.

You two witnessed a master. There are masters in every field. This is a master. Tier A. Seal Team Six level. haha Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers talks about how it takes a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice to become world-class at something. If you listen to Kaushiki's interviews, it becomes clear that she spent more than that amount of time on riyaaz(vocal practice)
