It doesn’t, true. It can be good, but I’ve rarely had good Mac & Cheese that I didn’t prepare myself. It’s highly variable at buffet-style restaurants but usually bad. The Americanized-Chinese buffets here in the USA almost always have it and it’s almost always bad.

Me and the missus started going to Toby for a roast when we were having the house renovated and the kitchen was out of use. Standing in a queue watching sweaty overweight parents and their chunky kids filling up the plates like it was their last meal ever and picking up any overspill from their plates and returning it to the carvery for others to enjoy seemed to put me off my impending grub yet I had payed for this and I needed a feed so in the queue I remained. Once I had obtained my dry piece of pork from some spotty kid with chefs whites that hadn’t been near a wash for a good while I started dancing my way to the secondhand vegetables seeing as most seemed to be all over the floor, you take what looks like it hasn’t been in a fight with previous customers if you are able to hold onto the scalding hot utensils then stand there at the end like a twat waiting for people to find room to place that slop of a gravy they call famous onto the side plate they have given you. Why these places have carpets I don’t know but it tells you how filthy the places are, the amount of food dropped off the gluttons plates and gravy all trodden into the carpet on one day would mean that carpet would need professionally cleaning daily to remain hygienic, if you look at it and imagine every table being removed you can clearly see where the tables used to be by following the gunge on the floor. Thoroughly enjoyed the bar on future visits but F#*#* me I can’t for the life of me understand why people eat this stuff, there are local cafes that do a far better job than these cattle markets.

We go regularly on a Thursday to the one on the A6 near Over Hulton Bolton in Lancashire,we’ve been going there for around 10 years. Lovely staff who make us most welcome,we’re disabled and they really are helpful and thoughtful,the food is not always the best but on average it’s good value for money,I once complained about the carrot’s being rock hard,they apologised and said they would do better,in fairness they’ve been great ever since,we are diabetic so only have soft drinks which are horrendously expensive and I think this needs to be addressed but overall it’s a pleasant place to have a meal there’s a new place across the road which we tried once, Never again,half cooked meats and vegetables absolutely disgusting so it was back to the Toby and that’s where we’ve stayed,it’s good value when compared to a fish and chip restaurant or McDonald’s.

My family and I love Toby Carvery, we have been going to our local one for over 20 years, sometimes we even go weekly on a Monday during the winter months to get us through the first day back at work! It can be hit and miss, sometimes it’s better than others but overall it is great value for money in the week.

Our local Toby carvery doesn't give you enough meat to make a 1 slice of bread sandwich, extortionate price for a plate of overcooked mushy vegetables. Will never go again.

Definitely think it’s more with it with the offers. We got 25% off the total bill and me and my partner got 4 drinks (one refillable), soup of the day, 2x pigs and blankets with another offer with having 2 for 1, 2x kings sized carvery’s and 2x Sticky Toffee puddings - it worked out to £45 instead of £60 (roughly), plus you collect stamps for free rewards too.

I have this neat trick I always use when I go to a carvary! When the spotty nosed carver asks you what meat you want just say “oh only 1, chicken, pork, gammon or beef or whatever please…He will cut you a few slices and when he goes to hand the plate back to you, you say “actually the beef, gammon etc looks nice so “can you put a slice of that on the plate too?” Works every time!!!

agree with your closing comments - if you're out and want a tasty fill up mid week - its good value. if you want something special pay double and enjoy what you are after... I would agree with your score Lee. I used to take my mam to the Metro Centre one in Gateshead (on a weekday). I always got the king size. Tended to find they were a bit mean with the meat. However, the vegetables were always very good. It's a chain and you will never get that unique 'country pub' feel. As long as people realise that, then it's always been fairly good. Trick is to avoid the add-ons like the pigs in blankets and coffee (that pushes the bill right up). They lure you into them. It serves a purpose and fills you up for the day. Good review

All the best carvery`s (certain hotels chains) disappeared during the early 1990`s after its hey day in the 80`s, Toby`s is ok and sufferable for a mid week meal with the lower price - the one`s that are left nowadays (poor value) are the overpriced under served chefy bistro types. - I hope you do more of these (sunday roasts).

My kids would eat them every day. The roasts, the homemade gravy.....in Italy they preserve their classics and say "like mama used to make", why don't we praise English mums for their genius roasts too?
@chefbink612 жыл бұрын
Well I'm not sure where to start. I guess the 1st thing is how many covers are they doing? I ask this because the buffet is a absolute mess. When I worked at the Jekyll Club as line chef we all had to work Sunday Brunch. I have worked all the stations from the carving to the omelet, and I can tell you right now our executive chef would have a cow if she saw the buffet in that much of a mess!! The Carving station was a pigsty with all the little pieces of meat scattered all over the place. There is NO excuse for that type of a mess. Did you see all the peas and carrots laying on the steam table? How about the spilled gravy that was dry and hard on the steam table? Did you see it??? I'm sorry but my training as a chef would not let that go. I would hate to see what the back of the house looks like!! If the front of the house looks that bad there is no telling what you would find in the back. Nope I have to disagree with you. When ever I go to a Carvery the 1st thing I do in look at the steam table and if it's a mess I walk right back out and that's just what I would have do in this case. So my score is No score!!

Spot on review. It’s filling, good enough and does the job. Totally agree that it’s murder on Sundays. Most carverys are. Much prefer when it’s quiet. To be honest I’m amazed so many people are still going out eat as it’s so expensive wherever you go these days.

I've been to this Toby quite a few times from when it first opened, though not since just before the first lockdown. We only ever went on a Sunday once and it was so busy we just came out and went elsewhere, never again. The dinner looked nice enough and very appetising, I don't know how you manage to shovel it all in, Lee. We always went midweek when it would be quieter and cheaper. The downside for me is that they only have roast lamb on Sundays and as it's my favourite, have to have something else instead midweek. We always sat in the pub side rather than the table service side and the clearing and wipng of tables wasn't always up to scratch. I don't know about now, but their salt and pepper pots didn't used to look like they ever got a god clean or wipe ... these little things matter! The area around the gravy bar was an example here and before when I went, it was terribly messy and I know it was busy, but it's not an excuse. Saying all that, I've been a fan of Toby's for many years before this one existed and I more or less like their stuff, so I'll score this an 8/10. Enjoyed the video, and nice to see a bit of drone footage at the beginning ... you are getting advanced aren't you.

Only reason it's £11.99 on a Sunday is they have lamb, they don't have it any other day. The king size upgrade is really an extra yorkie, a couple of sausages and a bit of extra meat which usually ends up in a doggie bag

Great Video lee the things i don't like about the toby carvery are its great for vegetarians cos they are stingy on the meat portions, also i like my food to be piping hot when it gets to the table and because of the logistics by the time you dig in it is lukewarm!! Midweek is better though i agree🙂
@paulnosworthy48182 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee… 5/10 for me. Sunday is the only day my two daughters with their families are free also you was drinking coke. Six adults four children with drinks your looking at £300. For that sort of money you can have a catering company come in with a pre-selection menu all prepared ready to eat with change for booze. Also it’s completely different for a Sunday gathering. For my daughters 40th I ordered a Michelin star curry for six (McDonald’s for the kids) cost £275 delivered and it was the best Indian meal anybody had ever had. They recommended the taster menu…brilliant and plentiful. The meal you had for ten home cooked £25 tops plus the girls bring gin, wine you name it. Lastly, back to Toby and any other carvery is that it’s either an “eating competition” or “who can get the most on the plate”. I am amazed at the later: people have tried and tested strategies and tricks to get extra meat and Yorkshire’s. Great aerial shot Lee all looking very professional.

We often go to the same Toby carvery near us, and have never been disappointed. It's always a lovely meal, the meat and veg cooked just right, with a big choice of different veg. Also, for me, the famous Toby gravy makes the meal, lots of it. We have a Toby that's closer, but it's just not the same. We've given it the benefit of the doubt and gone a couple of times, but no. Everything in the Carvery is the same, but for us, travelling a little further is worth it. It's got to be down to the different chefs.

@Aevilbeast2 жыл бұрын
Well, technically you could say that about that all restaurant food. Except for a very few exceptions, it's almost always going to be cheaper to make it at home. You're paying for the convenience and being served in a nice setting, and that is worth it for a lot of people. Not everyone is capable or confident enough to make a decent meal at home (though I believe everyone should at least learn to make simple roast at least some point in their lives), or sometimes just don't want to go to the effort of making food for whatever reason. I'm not saying this place was worth it, personally I tend to stay away from buffet style restaurants like this, (especially the more budget/economic ones, the food safety/cost cutting measures always kinda scares me at places like those...But I'd 100% be interested in checking out one of those expensive & extravagant Las Vegas buffets. Like they say go big or go home LOL!) but there's a big reason why it's super crowded, and it's not simply because everyone there is just lazy or not smart enough to realize it's cheaper to make it at home.
@mayhem4922 жыл бұрын
@@Aevilbeast Thanks for the reply but I’m afraid it does not persuade me to alter my opinion, if anything it reinforces it. If you’re prepared to fork out (ha!) the thick end of £30 for an awful Sunday dinner for 2 (including drinks) simply for “the convenience”, you’re lazy and a mug!

My late Dad bought only eye of round for roast beef: very cheap, very tough, very lean. Flavorful but the texture of boiled shoe leather and lacking in fat. He served it to company as well. Usually he wasn’t a cheapskate about food. He revered what he called “eye of the round” (English was his third or fourth language) for some reason. I can’t recall having had proper roast beef at home as a lad… perhaps we did have it occasionally but if so I can’t remember. The English-style Sunday beef just wasn’t something we had. I read about it in novels.
