The creator of the Cube Rule is like Sandwich Theory's version of Sigmund Freud, in that they presented a series of arguments so outlandish and foul that it kicked the entire field of study into high gear trying to prove them wrong. Oddly, I find that extremely respectable.

It was a regular dinner thing when I was a child. Wednesday was fish 'n' chip night - I'd usually eat the fish on its own first (breaded cod or haddock) with some peas, tartare sauce and a drizzle of lemon juice. Then the chips would go between two thick-cut slices of French boule loaf, sometimes buttered, and usually with ketchup slathered on top. Absolute bliss... sorry, you've got me nostalgic now!

Actually, if you have spaghetti with meatballs, it's a toast. And if you count the sauce as a topping, and interpret the collective of the noodles as one single shape, then, topologically speaking, it is a quiche, assuming the sauce has penetrated into the inside of the noodle amalgamation. Unless you pick up the noodle amalgamation and notice there is some sauce where it used to be, in which case it must, necessarily, be a sushi.

@Joblerone
@Joblerone Жыл бұрын
Pasta must be adjudicated on an individual basis. For example, you cite ravioli, but I raise you gnocchi, another delicious calzone. But then you have things like elbow macaroni and penne that are clearly sushi whose filling is sauce, but then you get lasagna noodles that are clearly just toast waiting to become a sandwich. The only potentially uncategorizable pastas are things like spaghetti, which wrap but do not encompass food in a tube. For this reason, they are between tacos and calzones to any additives depending on position, but the spaghetti itself is at most a taco to any other piece of spaghetti. for this reason, I declare them salads for inconsistency.

Pasta and soup and other things that are held by dishes instead of a sort of breading, would all classify as Salad. Yes, including spaghetti. Although, since spaghetti has the breading on the inside, it would be it's own category set off to the side. An alphabet soup would also fall under the category of spaghetti. Remember, things ca be in more than one category. Alphabet soup would be considered a spaghettis structure, AND a soup structure. As for lasagna, that's a multilayered sandwich.
@ZoeBateman
@ZoeBateman Жыл бұрын
Ok for sandwich alignment I'm a hard-line sandwich structure purist/elitist; a sandwich MUST be 2 separate pieces of *specifically* bread with filling in-between (toasting the bread is acceptable, I will not disqualify grilled cheese from it's sandwich status for example. I also do not disqualify multi-layer/multi-decker sandwiches, as any additional bread from the top and bottom pieces are just part of the filling). However, I'm an ingredient rebel, as long as it is edible and you can put it between 2 pieces of bread, you can call it a sandwich. A hotdog is not a sandwich, because it breaks the "2 separate pieces of bread" rule. A sub is not a sandwich for the same reason, I'd say it (and I suppose the hotdog) is more similar to a soft taco (after all, tortilla is a bread yet we don't call things held via tortilla sandwiches) as it's technically 1 piece of bread which is kind of "hugging" the filling. An open-faced sandwich is NOT a sandwich, it is 2/3 of a sandwich, it is incomplete and not yet a sandwich. An example of something else would be a building, you wouldn't call it complete if it's 2/3 made, it's under construction. A "water sandwich" is not possible, water is not something you eat, therefore not "edible". If you put water between 2 pieces of bread, you just have 2/3 of a very wet sandwich. This goes for any other liquid, condiments not included here as "liquid" because they are typically thicker and included as filling. Edit: Ok, after completing the video I feel much more confident in my views. Cube rule is mostly accurate I feel.
@Barakon
@Barakon Жыл бұрын
Uh, no, I’d call the 0 starches on all sides category “other” because salad has a particular definition, that of being a bunch of solid ingredients loosely put together without being mostly submerges in a liquid, but can be sauced, traditionally a salad is mostly plant based, but can also include meat, dairy, & or fungi. A steak is a single ingredient, a piece of muscle meat, & mash potatoes is a purée made of mostly potatoes or sweet potatoes, hence the name. NEITHER OF WHICH ARE SALADS! Also cereal is a soup, change my mind.
@aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa790

2:39 First off, it is not any baked product. It is specifically sliced bread, sliced into the shape that we all know and love, which is square on the bottom and heart-shaped at the top. Unless the waffle is of this shape, it is not structurally pure. Secondly, just because we call them "ice cream sandwiches" does not make them real sandwiches. Anything dessert is allowed to steal or borrow words while not actually conforming to the actual dish. Therefore we use the word while acknowledging inwardly that it is not, in fact, a real sandwich, but merely a creative kind of dessert that borrows the word because its cute and it resembles sandwiches. But ice cream sandwiches are not real sandwiches.

Warning, the following comment got waaayyy outta hand, and is ridiculously long. Read at your own discretion. I'm still watching but i've decided to make notes, since so far I feel like I'm learning more about Bettina than about the sandwiches (which isn't a bad thing, I just find this interesting :3 This is all in good fun, and I'm literally just doing this because I have thoughts about everything and my brain told me to write it all down.) Things I didn't know that I have learned so far: 1) she[I hope that's a correct pronoun, if not I will change it] doesn't eat bacon. Not certain whether it is preference-based, religious-based, health-based, or other dietary restriction, nor whether it extends beyond bacon. 2) she has never heard of the British sandwich known as a chip butty, and as such assumed it to have a pronunciation of "chip booty". I totally understand though because it's not one of the more well known in pop culture British foods the way that beans on toast or Nando's are. 3) She has sadly never come across a Choco Taco. Edits pt 1: 4) she has understandably been confused by the addition of the pop-tart to the alignment chart, as it follows more from the ingredient anarchy column than it does the structure rebel row. Also the earlier addition of the poptart/ravioli comparison surely did not help. I think that could throw any one of us for a loop. 5) did... did she choose to say "spake" rather than "spoke," or was that part of the formatting from elsewhere? I don't know how to feel about such a word. Edit pt final: 6) Excellent taste in pie. I also enjoy pumpkin pie quite greatly. 7) not really a learning, but just observation/opinion: I love the use of "weird flex but okay" 8) yes, that is indeed 5 just as it says. Counting, achievement unlocked! :D 9) not immune to the confusion of the uncrustables. I feel that the post had no reason to mention the unbitten part, because in that case, cube theory falls apart unless you swallow every food item whole. So yeah, I agree with this confusion. 10) Rice was brought up as it is a starch, and was clearly used as a starch example in the categorization of multiple items on the chart, and I believe she did not process that information before making this judgement of rice. 11) idk man, soup has to do with sandwiches for the same reason salads do; because this chart is for food item identification on broader terms, and not just in terms of sandwiches. Also because its fun to bring up more confusing debates :3 12) while I disagree on pasta not counting as anything, it is consistent for Bettina to say that, as pasta would seem to me to be analogous to rice, and it was established by the maker that rice is up to interpretation, so she is right to say it does not apply, as that is the same as she said about rice, pretty much. 13) And yeah, ravioli is indeed a calzone, especially since poptarts were previously called ravioli (or vice versa according to the poptarts twitter,) and poptarts were already classified as calzones. 14) but yeah that point still stands that it only defies categorization depending on the individual assessment, so I'm dubious there. In conclusion, what I learned about Bettina Levy today is: Vibe check passed, 10/10, we should totally be friends lol Bonus Round!: just info that I actually learned about the topic, or thoughts I have about it: A) Only the steak makes sense as a salad, since it was previously established that the cube rule is based on location of starches. Mashed potatoes is none of the categories, and is perhaps infinity, as it is all starch. An argument could be made that it is a calzone, since it typically contains dairy as well, and is not pure starch, but that gets into chemistry and types of solutions. So I'd say it is a homozygous solution, making it an infinity category, and not 0 or 6. Same goes for the fried rice, as it was already used as an example of a starch, such as the nigiri sushi. Depending on how well mixed, the fried rice could be argued to inhabit multiple categories. The other bonus salad items need their own explanations as well but I don't think I should go into everything or else we'd be here forever. B) There needs to be an alternate category 2, as technically the pumpkin pie slice has two faces covered by starch. Because it cannot be a toast if cheesecake and key-lime pie are quiches. One option must be picked, they cannot both be true or else it all falls apart again. C) Is sushi even a sushi? Because while it is contained by rice, there are many cases where that rice is then contained by nori, which is more of a vegetable than a starch. Some sushi is still sushi, but others need a special category in this cube method. And that tumblr user who mentioned burritos being sushi even though it was previously defined as calzone is also correct, because we see two different interpretations of a burrito throughout this journey, and one is clearly opened, so just like typical sushi, burritos are also on the line between categories depending on type/construction. Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk, if anyone actually made it through all of that, I mean. Especially since this video is 2 years old, so this may never be seen. But I took the time to write all this, so I'm not getting rid of it now.

It’s a dumpling if it’s a mixture containing meat (or a meat substitute like beans) totally encased in a sealed grain. Includes: ravioli, calzone, dumplings, pizza rolls, and corn dogs. Excludes: burrito (you can unfold it), pop tart (has no meat). A sandwich has bread specifically on exactly two or three sides. This includes the “traditional” sandwich, hamburger, subs, and hotdogs while excluding tacos.

by these rules (specifically asking about the meat/no meat rule), would you define vegetarian/vegan options of ravioli, calzone, dumplings, pizza rolls, and corn dogs as dumplings or as a pop tart?
@gavinbrown216

@@ZoeBateman those fall under the meat substitute clause in that situation as they are direct derivatives of their meat-containing counterparts (so still dumplings)

Also coming back to this video AGAIN. I'd like to argue that no, a ravioli cannot be a kind of pop-tart like the pop-tart twitter tries to argue, because 1: a pop-tart is a pastry. 2: pop tart is a BRAND NAME FOR a specific style of pastry.

Decided to look up the chip butty. Wikipedia says. A chip butty is a sandwich filled with chips (thick-cut deep fried potatoes, similar to steak fries), optionally eaten with condiments such as brown sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise, or malt vinegar. The bread may be slices from a loaf or a bread roll, and is usually buttered. The chip butty can be found in fish and chip shops and other casual dining establishments in the British Isles.

Here is the problem: english being a stupid language has only one word: sandwich. In Italian the sandwich means two slicese of "pane a cassetta" (which is the specific kind of bread that you would toast in a toaster - just to be clear) with anything inside. It's a subcategory of a "Panino" Which is any kind of bread with anything inside. So hot dogs, burgers, subs... all "panini" but no one would call them sandwiches. for other things like the ice cream sandwich you add words. you call it "ice cream sandwich" and no one gets hurt. You are specifying that it's actually Ice cream in the form of a sandwich. A panino is made with bread. Can be a very small loaf (also called panino by itself) or two slices of a large loaf. So Tacos aren't part of the category. Wraps aren't usually considered panini cause the bread has no yeast so the texture is different. Sweets aren't panini although it's possible to specify that it's something else with that form just like the ice cream sandwich. A toast is only toast if it's toasted but it can be any kind of bread. A pizza isn't bread A focaccia isn't bread A calzone is a folded pizza. And NO ONE messes with PASTA

Open face sandwich? Why do you think they call it "Avocado toast" in the first place? Though a lot of these are.. uh.. Lets just say I wholeheartedly agree with the sandwich alignment chart, however not so much the cube model categorizing things into named categories of other food. Perhaps the cube model could work if the categories weren't named after already existing food. And like Slicing a calzone through the middle doesn't yield two quiches

What I learned is that some subjects defy scientific categorization. I'm of the camp that we simply do not have the right words for this and should not use misleading text such as "sandwich" or "calzone" just use words like type-2 starch structure or type-6 starch structure respectively. Also I want to posit the type-7 category where the starch structure is woven into the food-stuff to encompass stuff like pasta and rice. Type-0 can work for foods like salads, but I don't think they work for pasta or mashed potato.

A sandwich is a food item in between two pieces of bread. A hotdog is not a sandwich until the flimsy weak bun splits into two. Then it's a sandwich.

I SPEAK ONLY THE TRUTH: i had a councilor at a camp who had this exact thing written on a piece of paper in order to show what is and isent a sandwich and he claims to have created this method of identification... there is 3 possible solutions 1-he lie 2-coincidence 3-grate minds think alike i doubt he lei but at the same time he didn't look like the kind of guy to post it on the internet maybe he did but my moneys on coincidence or i judged him wrong but yes i did debate with him and i just sorta made it more complicated by saying things that dident make much sense for it to be in the categories like sushi (he ended up ignoring what i said and just accepted sushi is toast and other things like that)also instead of quiche he said it was a bread bowl and i don't remember much els differences
