There is 3 categories which every food can go: -Sandwiches : A meal which you stack ingredients (you can have a sandwich of bread for example with 2 slices) -Soups : Mostly liquid foods (can have a bit of solid food in it) -Salads : One or a bunch of food you put together, in piece or not (a fruit is a salad of on ingredient) Technically a hotdog is a sandwich, you can try with other foods, each of them can be in those categories.

Reminds me of a story I wrote you are a dad with a job and after coming home you see your wife sitting on the couch emotionlessly. you shake her and get frosting on your hand and then she falls apart and you find out she is cake. you go to you son’s bedroom and he also sits emotionlessly on his bed you find out he is also a cake. then everything in your house falls apart. You run out of the house to escape. You run and run but you find out the road is cake you still decide to run. everything is turning into into cake everybody is cake. You try to escape this world that is turning into a cake. You find somebody who has a house and has not turned into cake yet. You talk to him and ask “How are you not cake?” He answers with “I drank something.” You ask if you can live in his house and he agrees to it. After going in his house you wake up. You think it was all a dream. But you find out it wasn’t a dream you fell asleep inside the man’s house. The man says to you “You’re finally awake.” He gives you a drink that looks like a mix of purple and yellow. You ask what drink it is and he tells you “it will make it so you can’t turn into cake.” But it did the exact opposite. He’s the one who turned everything into cake. You are now a cake and you no longer actually exist.

Toppings on bread: Toppings which have 1 side covered: bottom Sandwich: Toppings which have 2 sides covered: top and bottom Taco: Toppings which have 3 sides covered: left, right and bottom Wrap: Toppings which have 4-5 sides covered: top, bottom, left, right (and back) A sausage is a taco. I was the Quality Assurance Manager at a food plant that made both sandwiches and pizza. Per the USDA, their jurisdiction did NOT cover any of our products where the meat was covered by a bread product (sandwiches.) However, they were very interested in any of our products where the meat was readily visible, e.g. a pepperoni pizza (NOT a sandwich.) 😜

My take on this is that for it to be a sandwich it needs carb and then protein and then carb. An open faced sandwich is a "Sope"(spanish). This means that depending on if you cut all the way through the bun when putting the sausage inside, a hot dog *could* be called a sandwich.

That court case is outdated. Merriam webster now defines sandwich as " 1a: two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between b: one slice of bread covered with food." A hot dog bun is a split roll.

I don't recall seeing butter in the tubs at Subway. Since they don't put butter on their rolls does that disqualify their product as a sandwich? I used to work at Burger King and while we used products like ketchup and mayonnaise I don't recall using any butter on our hamburgers or cheeseburgers. We even put fried fish fillets in a bun. And how about those prepackaged products that include a layer of peanut butter or cheese between two crackers? Uncrustables (tm) ? Corn dogs? Hot Pockets (tm)? Pie with a top crust? Proposal: At least three layers. Both outer layers or wrap a cooked grain product. Outer layers/wrap/coating MUST be cooked before adding the filling although post assembly toasting is allowed. NOT messy enough to require implements like a spoon or fork to eat (disqualify anything resembling chip beef and gravy on top of a slice of toast).

When the definition says, "buttered" it could be defined as applying a spread (a verb), and any soft condiment, not necessarily the dairy product we refer to as butter. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a sandwich. A Pastrami on rye with mustard is, yes, a sandwich.

In Sweden we have two words "Smörgås" (as in smörgåsbord) and "macka" that at least as most people use them today mean the same thing, and that is any piece of bread with anything on top. In Sweden open faced sandwiches are much more common than a "dubbelmacka" (a double "macka" - or a sandwich with two pieces of bread), and just butter open face sandwiches aren't that weird. Of course depending on household and personal taste, but I know many people who prefer just butter on their sandwich, especially if they buy some nicer bakery bread and not just store-bought toast bread. As for Pizza I don't think a lot of people actively associates it with "macka", but at least in my cook book it's described as "an Italian hot "macka"". Never heard anyone describe a hot dog as such though, nor tortilla wraps or pita pockets. They seem to exist as their own branch of bread food.

Common sense dictates that they must be considered sandwiches from a legal standpoint in order for a Subway and Panera to be disallowed in the same shopping center, but the only way the ruling would say so _is_ by citing common sense, which is legally fluid, as the central definition would prevent a Subway product from sandwich classification.

I did an entire essay back in highschool about a grilled cheese sandwich, spent days researching sandwichs, history and anatomy, technically a sandwich doesn't need two pieces of bread, it can be one, heck look at every subway sandwich, regardless, a hotdog is a sandwich, and by that means, most grains and dough also count, so also sandwiches are jelly donuts, taco, peta bread pockets, and yes, technically, an egg roll. Pop tarts, ravioli, which reminds me, Pop tarts are basically ravioli, ravioli is basically stuffed noodles, pop tarts are noodles. Fight me.

Sandwich isnt a broad group really, it is an "overflow" grouping meant to catch things that other terms don't catch. Wraps, tacos, hotdogs, they have names that fit them better that won't confuse anyone when you ask for one. Terms only have meaning when they have utility and if someone who wants a quesadilla doesnt ask you to make them a sandwich, then calling one a sandwich has no utility. And "open face sandwich" isn't a thing.

It's also interesting that apparently no one has considered judging by different types of bread directly - for example I'd say unleavened bread should disqualify a foodstuff for the sandwich category.
