Go for the shortest coat and make sure they can breathe okay. The folding skin can be overly mucinous and will grow into masses that need to be surgically removed. Even my pedigreed dog born in 1989 had skin that not only easily punctured but would result in a three point tear. The Shar Pei's look and attitude scares other dogs into biting them so have needle and thread or go to the vet at unexpected times. They are super loyal. Not the biggest people pleasers. They are protective of your children so they need to be monitored when all the kids are goofing around? Sheba 'bites butts' if not introduced to everyone, the kids would say. Have your potential puppy screened for the autoimmune disorder that seems to go along with an overly squishy snout, and the not to AKC standards, long bear coat. Shar Pei make an amazing pet that you will cherish and remember always.

I’m so sorry for your loss of your peibie. She was beautiful! Close knit and loyal is exactly what they are, even to the point of developing idiopathic blindness if they end up in shelters because they miss their people. When you’re ready for another, if you are, and if you need names of reputable breeders in the US, I can send you names of folks I trust. I’d strongly recommend looking at Shar Pei rescue groups, too. It’s a crap shoot on health with them, but people do abandon them and often they aren’t approachable in kennels because they’re so freaked out with being away from their original people that they won’t engage. They shut down. Anywho…I know the feeling of missing these peibies when they cross. It’s like a piece of your heart is gone… I hope you try again and find another soul Pei! Love ya!

Good one. Manatee is a perfect name for a Shar Pei-they have the same face! And you’re absolutely right about early, ongoing and thorough socialization for this breed. That cute face and body can hide a wealth of sins. As an adult, a non or under socialized Shar Pe can be a real liability: they can be quite aggressive towards other dogs, they are easily triggered and can be unpredictable or even aggressive with strangers, children and other pets. They can be dominant, stubborn and unruly even with their own family. Socialization and training are therefore an absolute must with this breed. They are definitely not an advisable choice for first time or novice pet owners.

You have to watch this breed. I’ve had two, one was affected by Shar pei fever. Stress can trigger an episode and it can be fatal. No one knows why they get them or when, there are daily preventative meds, but they can still get a fever sporadically. When one hits you have to act quick. Very few vets have experience with it and people aren’t warned before adopting, they just see the wrinkles and live the look.

She knew & liked my sons, but they quickly learned not to stick an arm inside an open car window or enter my bedroom without me telling Grace to stand down. They do have skin issues, eye issues, and allergies as Vanessa mentioned. And she definitely didn't like other dogs with one BIG exception: She loved Great Danes! The rescue place I got her from was actually a Great Dane rescue. She felt comfortable with them, and naturally recognized them immediately from a distance. The only time she ever had a friendly reaction to another dog, it was a Great Dane. She immediately wanted to play. I miss her, but she did all those have health issues that Vanessa mentioned.

Our Shar Pei just passed a couple of months ago. Her name was Ohana and she was a great dog, a true sweetheart who was super protective of my nieces; she absolutely hated water, no matter in what form. She did have some health problems; turned out that she was allergic to poultry and some environmental allergies and ended up being on allergy pills. Near the end she also started to have seizures, which was hard to see her go through. She was 12 and a half and was one of the best dogs we've ever had; she loved small dogs (she grew up with my maltese/chihuahua mix) but didn't trust bigger dogs because she was bit at a dog park twice because of owners who couldn't control their loose dogs. Miss her a great deal, but it was nice seeing a video of a puppy. Wonderful breed, but not low maintenance and are stubborn to train.

Finally a PEIBIE!! Thank you, Vanessa. Sushi is such a pretty girl, and I appreciate her peibie parents bringing her in to be groomed. She actually did pretty great with her nails, a point of screaming and shrieking among my Pei - like all of them - with me, anyway. I have a great vet though. Sushi is a beautiful brush coat. In my experience, (in the breed since 1987), brush coated Pei are healthier in than horse coated Pei, but that’s just me. So much has to do with responsible breeding, and we’ve worked really hard to breed out the lines after so many years of unfortunate inbreeding, including among the original Pei brought here. I personally love the bear coated Pei, despite the fact that the breed standard doesn’t allow them to be shown, etc. The coat is a throwback to the crosses with chows done in Hong Kong to produce a dog appealing to the American market. The traditional Shar Pei dog was never really close to extinct despite the lore. It was always bred in the countryside as a guard and herding dog, and there are breed fanciers that really appreciate this flavor of Pei. They are horse coated, sleek, not heavily wrinkled aside from over the face, eyes, around the ears and tail. The muzzle isn’t an adorable hippo mush face, but rather a bone mouth. They’re actually much like malinois in their energy, focus and needs. Much fewer health problems, given the lack of the inbreeding and crossbreeding with pugs, chow chows, and bulldogs in the early and middle part of the 20th century. Anyway, I’ve always had litters that have thrown at least one bear. Sushi seems to have some those same characteristics, but I don’t know her breeder. I’ve found over the years that the longer the coat, assuming you’re having a Pei as a pet as opposed to showing for the standard, the lazier and less aloof the Pei is. I do love all flavors of Pei, including flowered Peibies - such as the ones brought here by Matgo Law, but I’m largely more interested in healthy and happy family Pei of any kind. They’re all so unique, but have the kind of deep loyalty and scary smarts I have never experienced in any other breed. But then, I’m partial. I currently have an 11 year old chocolate brush coat girl, a 4 year old cream bear coat girl and a 3 year old rescue brown and white flowered bear coated male. Together they comprise a terrorist cell, lol! 2 out of the 3 prefer hugs and playing with us to food. Odd. I know. Sushi appears to be an incredible girly! Whenever I see a peibie puppy, I look for floppy socks on rear hocks. She doesn’t have them, for which I am grateful and happy for her parents. In my experience, such heavy socks or skin folds has always been a sign of very serious health problems to come: fevers, glaucoma, kidney failure, allergies and these poor souls don’t live as long - again, in my own experience. Sushi is gorgeous and healthy, and she didn’t even back up and telescope into her skin, (defense mechanism)!! I wish her many long years (mine have, knock wood, lived to be 14 years now…in the 70’s and early 80’s it was only 4 years on average. Thank you again for sharing Sushi, and thank you to her peibie parents for sharing her and proving what a delightful breed she’s a great example of. Warming: peibies are like Lays’s potato chips. I had a Sharpei mix that I absolutely ADORED. One thing you should know is that lots of pet insurances will refuse to insure this breed. When my vet charted that she was a Sharpei, her claims were denied. When she was described as mixed breed, the claims were paid, until she got Sharpei Familial Fever. From that point, nothing was covered, and I ended up dropping it. So, definitely hit or miss with pet insurance. You WILL need money for vet bills, potentially huge vet bills. Even when she was costing money I couldn't afford, I never regretted rescuing her. She was amazing. I lost her in 2014 at 14 years old (which is really long for this breed) to a combo of lymphoma and Cushing's Syndrome and I still miss her every. Single. Day.

My parents bred and showed Shar-peis when I was growing up (even as recently as the early 90s they weren't very common). Be careful when buying pups, as some breeders will cut corners on vet treatments. Depending on how the wrinkles fall they may need a doggy eye lift to make sure that the folds don't push the fur into their eyes. If you can also see the parents that can be really helpful as they were an endangered breed until the late 20th century, so a lot of the genetic conditions are quite close to the surface. And don't forget, although they will grow into their skin, they'll always have the wrinkly face, as well as the front shoulders and base of the tail. These need to be kept clean and dry to avoid encouraging nasties to grow. So you'll want to introduce them to cleaning wipes and towels for drying early and often. ❤

OMG the little snorts!!! AHHHHH! Reminds me of my Mom's old service dog. He would snort and moan (if you massaged his little ears) and make all sorts of sounds I've never heard a dog make lol. He was a Cane Corso. Beautiful beast that he was...

Mine was a shar pei and German shepherd mix and hated baths! She was quite the character, after I would give her a bath if any of my clothes were hanging on the line to dry she would pull just my clothes of the line and leave everyone else’s alone! Miss her so much!

I have a shar pei/husky mix. She has a quiet charm and definitely hates baths. Seems to be a shar pei trait. XD

I hope the owners do something about her Brachycephalic breathing. It is pretty bad! Absolutely adorable little bugger!!

Yeah, so many comments about how cute the snorting sounds are. People don't understand what that is.

Given they got a purebred dog with a bear coat, I'm sure they think it's real cute.

My thoughts exactly. Those snorts are not cute! 🫁

Yea they are so cute but this video almost made me a bit sad. So many ppl don't even realise all the health problems that come with a well-breed pure-breed let alone a badly breed one. They have everything from shar Pei fever, in-turned eyelids, conjunctivitis, ear infections, skin infections, high levels of aggression(more common in poorly breed males), pododermatitis (infected paws. Can be VERY painful), kidney problems and difficulty breathing. I really hope that ppl that get this breed are aware of what they are getting. There are good ones but also if not breed proparly the expenses wrach up quickly and poor pooch doesn't get a good quality of life.

I have two Shar Pei/Husky mixed siblings, and they were unplanned, but adorable and well-loved. They hate water, no matter what we do! Both breeds tend to be neopbobic, and boy do mine exemplify that! Meanwhile, we've avoided most of the health challenges, except for the occasional ear fungal infection. They both have husky shading but very short, bristly coats. The girl is "blonde" like their Shar Pei mama and the boy "brunette" like their Husky father. Good, loyal dogs.

So adorable! I'm so jealous that so many dogs allow their nails to be clipped. I got a seven month old puppy Rio who HATES to have his nails clipped or ground. I thought it would be a cinch to train him but after one month of trying I still can't do it. The silver lining is when he crawls on my bed at night and goes to sleep at night, I can use an emery board! So I bought some 60 grit nail files and some 80/100 grit (one on each side). He sleeps through the whole thing. 🤦🏻♀️ But now his nails are nicely filed down.

My family used to own 3 shar Pei's, two females and a male. We used to show our 2 female shar Pei's in dog shows. Unfortunately they have all passed away now but they were very lovely dogs 🐕

To avoid alot of the health issues with the shar pei and increase popularity go with the the traditional bone mouth shar pei if you can. Much of the shar-peis health issues is because of the in breeding and breeding for the wrinkling. American Shar-peis are known as meat mouth, but traditional is known as a bone mouth!

Yes, my shar pei was aloof with strangers. He would tolerate them, but eventually, I would tell strangers that he would rather not be petted and no one ever argued. He was the same with other dogs... If they kept their distance he would tolerate/ignore them, but get in his face... your looking for a fight. (Except Chow chow dogs. He didn't like them and would go after them, no matter what... So I had to stay alert. Luckily there aren't too many of them here in sunny 🏜️ Arizona. 💖🌞🌵😷
