As I only ever saw Howard McNear on Andy Griffith Show, most of my life I never knew of his extensive career as an actor. In recent years I've been listening to podcasts of old radio shows that aired before broadcast TV existed and during its infancy in the 50's and early 60's. Therein I discovered Howard was frequently serving as a character actor in many radio shows. His longest running radio role was as Doc Adams in Gunsmoke. His unmistakable voice and speech patterns are always recognizable regardless of the character he portrayed. From the podcast hosts I learned he was a very well known and well respected actor in radio. Another of the Andy Griffith Show actors was also a regular in the Gunsmoke radio show - Parley Baer was Chester Proudfoot, Marshall Dillon's sidekick, but most people today only recognize him as one of Mayberry's Mayors from TV. He was also a frequent character actor in these radio shows: Suspense, Lux Radio Theater, Escape, CBS Radio Workshop, Family Theater, Let George Do It, Casebook of Gregory Hood, Adventures of Masie, Fort Laramie, Wild Bill Hickok and Richard Diamond, Private Detective. I listened to podcasts of many of these radio shows. They are far more entertaining than anything on TV today, and are free! I'm now retired but used to listen to them during my 45 -60 min daily commutes to and from work.

Bob, I was born the day this episode, A Date for Gomer was suppose to air. WhenI saw the closeup of this fake Floyd, I recognized who it was. I don't know his name but he was a regular town's person who played in many episodes. He was a short fellow with dark hair and wore glasses most the time. I saw him in an episode on All on the Family when Archie eulogies Strech Cunningham. It was the man that Archie stepped on his foot. Hope you have a great weekend!😊

If memory serves, the very first episode or second had the original Floyd for just one episode before the Floyd we all know. I always found it funny that the first episode introduced Barney as Andy’s cousin, but from there on every episode implied that they were friends growing up. Also, there’s and episode of a surprise party for Barney for being a Deputy for 5 years, but another episode has Barney saying he’s been in law enforcement for 10 years.

It was so sad, seeing Floyd in such a shape in “Goober’s Contest”. His speech was so garbled, you would have sworn that he was drunk as hell. By the end of season seven, his brains were scrambled and he was forced to retire …

It looks like the orignial Mr. Wilson on Dennis The Menace - Joseph Kearns. But although Kearns was still working in 1962,, he had a massive stroke and died. It is possible that he did an uncredited cameo on Andy Griffish that was not aired until a year later? The fact that the actor is not credited adds to the theory that it was Kearns - and that he was not credited because he had died and might confuse people.
@epeterd

I was thinking it looked like Joe Kearns, too. Seems unlikely that he'd have been in an episode that aired so long after his death though. Big fan of both those great radio actors.
@johnroy9654
@johnroy9654 8 ай бұрын
@@epeterd well, back in those days, they often did not shoot things sequentially. The best excample of that was "My Three Sons". Fred was still making movies, so they would only have him for 3 months out of the year. They would shoot scenes from several epidodes at the same time with Fred in them, requiring a lot of wardrobe changes. The actos often had no idea what episode they were filming for. Another example is Hee Haw. They would set up to shoot all of the skits for one segment that had a different version in each episode. Then they would put a show together ala carte. Stearns died a year before this aired. It is possible they shot that scene before he died. That would also explain why he is not mentioned in the credits.
@epeterd
@epeterd 8 ай бұрын
@@johnroy9654 That's true. Seems wild that they could have kept it that long. And it may be that it was planned for an earlier episode, and that short scene was held back till later.

Payroll records might reveal who played the stand-in. When I was an extra on "The Fugitive" remake with Tim Daly I was pulled aside to be shown as an officer handcuffing Richard Kimble. The man I handcuffed was not the lead actor, but another extra. The scale goes up when one gets hand close-ups, and etc., instead of their just being in the background.

I have wondered if being hit in the head like that could lead to strokes. I mentioned The Three Stooges earlier. While to fair some of them smoked and drank even were overweight, I do know that Curly Howard suffered several strokes. That is why he was replaced by his brother Shemp. Also I understand the year Curly died Shemp suffered a stroke. And Larry Fine. Just like Curly he suffered a series of strokes before he died in 1975. While I don't know for a fact those blows to the heads caused them to have strokes or not it does make one wonder!

The fake Floyd in the window looks a little like Joseph Kearns, who played Dennis the Menace next door neighbor George Wilson.

I used to put links to my other videos at the end of my youtuve videos. You can included a link ot a channel, playlist and a specific video. At the end of an Andy Griffith clip, people could click to see the Hillbillies video, and vice versa. It is extremely difficult to get views on KZbin. I think the reason is that the views don't count unless the viewer watches the entire video. KZbin doesn't want videos to get a lot of virews that count, because they have to pay for those views.

That guy looks to me to be Joseph Kearns who Played George Wilson on the Dennis the Menace TV show with Jay North as Dennis. The hairline, glasses and profile really resembles Kearns if it isn't actually him.
