C1 has a lot of variation from screen to exported JPEG. Sometimes the edit is matched to what I see on screen and sometimes it is not. The software isn't reliable as far as I'm concerned which is a shame, I think it is better overall.

The only thing that I really miss in LR is the dust spotting tool.
@freetibet10004 жыл бұрын
Wallace Shackleton / If you update to the latest version of Capture One that came out in May 2020 you will find a new fantastic spot healing tool that removes an unlimited number of spots or artifacts on a single layer without slowing down your workflow or computer. But it goes even further than that, you’re also able to remove larger objects with content-aware technology with that tool now.

I will also very highly recommend Capture One ! You can add how easy it is to make black & white in the color tool panel at the bottom where you can enable black & white ;) Remember that for Fujifilm, Nikon and Sony there are Capture One Express which are free versions ! The full versions for Fujfilm, Nikon and Sony are cheaper than the "normal" full version. I use Capture One express for Sony, it is exellent ! www.captureone.com/en/products-plans/capture-one-express www.captureone.com/en/products-plans/single-user

Let me tell you why I just subscribed to your channel. Great info on C1, of course. But another reason? I DIDN'T HAVE TO SIT THROUGH AN AMATEUR COMEDY ACT!!! THANK YOU. I am so tired of these channel guys trying to be funny, some take it way way overboard and the info gets lost. I love it when I see and hear straight, well-spoken, concise info without me needing to sit through an amateur comedy act. Wow, this was so refreshing, thank you. I would like you to do an episode on Exposure X5 (formerly Alien Skin).

Feature 13. Better RAW file conversion. The first time I opened a difficult image in Capture One, I knew I was switching. Feature 14. Luminosity Masking. Capture One's luminosity masking works on an existing mask using the image's luminosity values. For example: a landscape with a bright sky that needs to be darkened. Problem: a mountains that should not be darkened raises into the sky. In Capture One, add a graduated mask at the horizon (the mask now darkens the sky and the mountain). Apply the Luminosity mask to the mask and exclude the luminosity value of the mountain. The mountain is excluded from the graduated mask, which remains fully editable as a graduated mask. Feature 15. Tethered shooting. LR doesn't compare, not even close. I have almost full control of the camera from within Capture One. The only control I set on the camera is whether it is M, Tv, or Av. Also, the Skin Tone color tool can be used for skies. I used LR for a three years, and PS from version 2.5. After switching to Capture One, I hardly ever used Photoshop, which I have since dropped for Affinity Photo.
As an event photographer, I use C1 more often than LR. My clients don't want the images to be retouched too much. Sometimes they need the photos right after the event, sometimes they need them the next day. In the 2nd situation, I use C1 to refine the raw images a little bit, whitebalance, exposure, HDR, etc. C1 is more effetive than LR in such cases. But if I'm handling portraits, I would rather use LR. There are quite a lot of LR presents files to be used. C1 introduced its 'style' in last years, but resource is not as sufficient as LR. But there are some tools to transfer LR preset files to C1 style files nowadays.
@ShaneBaker4 жыл бұрын
I'm sure a lot of people will find this useful, Todd. One comment: a "13th feature" is that C1 is completely configurable in terms of the user interface and users can save these configurations for future use. Hence, where in your video, you called up Normalize as a floating tool (around 18:40), you could have added that to the tools tab wherever you like and provided you saved that workspace, it would be there next time. Indeed, some people moving from LR to C1 set it up so their tools are on the right side of the screen, as that feels more comfortable for them.
@dominey4 жыл бұрын
Yes! That’s a great point. Thanks Shane.

One feature in capture one I like is when you select a colour it can be turned into a mask on a new layer. That's perfect for targeted editing
@freetibet10004 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I love that tool too! Especially because that will give me the opportunity to further refine my mask, such as using the “Refine Mask” function under Layers. There is one negative with this approach though, -you will not be able transfer this specific edit to another photo if something have moved ever so slightly from one image to the next, -the very specific mask you just made is specific to the precise placements of the elements in your photo. On the other hand, a normal color-selection can be transferred over to any other photo without any kind of miss-alignment what so ever. Both methods have their uses so they both exists for different types of uses.
@MrStickmanPro13 жыл бұрын
About the presets: You can actually have both, contextual presets for individual tools AND global presets for multiple tools (you can also choose which tools exactly). The global ones are just called styles in Capture One, instead of presets. What’s absolutely great is that you can even apply styles on layers and use masks or decrease the "opacity", for example. Surprised that I didn’t know about some of the things you showed though, even after using C1 for over 3 years now.

There's no maybe about it, Capture One is a far superior tool in my opinion. I get a much better result than I ever did when editing in Lightroom. The way that C1 renders colour is pretty amazing. I would also say that the sliders are a little more subtle in C1 leading to a more measured approach to editing reducing the tendency to over edit pictures. As you said in your video, C1 has the ability to use all controls within the mask, this makes C1 so much more powerful. This together with the layers means that I very rarely need to go into more complex editors. I can have Things to check out that you did not mention in your video are Luma Range Masks, the completely configurable workspaces, focus masks and process recipes. I could not go back to Lightroom now, I would miss the layers, luma range masking and the colour tools too much.

Wow, thanks. Been thinking of switching but haven’t since as a graphic designer I pay for the CC full package. But I am blown away and as a Fuji X photographer I think C1 is turning into a must have. One feature you did not mention (for studio photographers) is the ability to do publication previews when shooting tethered which Adobe does not have. Most portrait photographers I know use C1 just because of this one feature.
@Paul_anderson_creative4 жыл бұрын
I use C1. Note that in addition to contextual presets it also has global presets like LR where you can select which adjustments are saved in that Preset, best of both! UI tailoring means I have reordered AND changed the C1 default workflow tabs to fit my processing. Superb. Thanks, great professional video..
@miguelangellabarca90483 жыл бұрын
Great video! One feature that is useful is that you can select a color range and then create a layer (a complete layer, not only color) with that color selection. I started on photo editing with capture one and I know very little about lightroom , but I found that LR is better correcting lens distortions (they have a wider catalog of lens). Also they keystone feature seems better in LR and LR lets you work with multiple photos to make panoramas or HDR. It would be great if you make the reverse video (what can you do in LR but no in CO)

Great videos on Capture One. I've been using it for a few years now and absolutely love it! By the way, that orange bar in the histogram shows up with ALL cursus and told you use. It's always bouncing around! It helps identify where a specific area or color lies: in the shadows, the mistiness or the highlights.... Very useful for assisting in adjusting your HDR settings......
@sanghyunpark14073 жыл бұрын
You may already be informed by other users, but my one of favorite feature over lightroom is refine function after masking. Just creat a empty layer and try to mask roughly on an object, and right click on masked layer and select refine mask and then play with it. I think this kind of precise (sort of saying) draw of masking is not available in lightroom. (similar feature like mask range by color or luma available but not simply/easy enough over capture on pro)

No doubt, capture one is way superior, I admit the learning curve is steeper, and one needs to take time to watch the online tutorials to discover all the wonders it provides. I had a hard time to switch, but I don't regret it one second.
@janric064 жыл бұрын
Ok, I think that indeed you are missing out on some features. -One fantastic one : when you create a layer and put a mask onto it (any kind, like brush, Linear Gradient, Radial, any combination of those), you can then restrict this mask via a Luma Range (the button for that is right above mask list). Just try it out on your photo with the mountain, create for instance a Gradient Mask, then press Luma Range, you now have the possibility select only a particular luminosity range. Again this does not modify the original mask, just adds a restriction on it that can be modified later on. -Actually the orange bar over the histogram is there for any tool. -The possibility to use either catalogs ( a bit like in LR ), but also sessions. A session is self contained, meaning it contains the database file with the photos inside a folder. You can move this folder around, put it onto an external drive, whatever, you always have everything. Well you need to watch some tutorials, it is really powerful and well done. Later if you like, you can import the session into a master catalog (if that is your strategy). Also you can import one catalog into another. - In fact there is so much to it, and I only use it for a couple of months, so I keep on watching tutorials or webinars, and everytime I learn something new. So I believe that the UI does not really show what C1 really has under its hood. That's why learning to use it is more difficult that LR.

Been using it for 9 nomths - I'm never going back to Lightroom. I would add: 1. Total customizability. You can anything anywhere you like. 2. Assymetrical linear gradient (you can move the upper and lower bounds of the gradient independently of each other). 3. Luminance masks (much more control than in LR and much easier to eliminate artifacts). 4. The ability to make adjustment masks from colour selections in the colour editor and then add a luminance mask to further refine it (combines luminance with colour masking). 5. Colour balancing of midtones, not just highlights and shadows. 6. The in-software help (tips tool, plus links for every tool to the Capture One website explaining what everything does and how it works).

I also used Lightroom for years, then purchased Capture One and have been using that as my main raw editor for a couple of years, and love it. I have an old Canon SX-50 super-zoom that is not supported by C1, so I use Lightroom for those raw images, and Lightroom just feels so 'clunky' compared to C1, and C1 just feels so much more professional. Love your vlogs! If you use a tablet like Wacom, I'd be interested to see how it is used properly -My Wacom is gathering dust because my couple of attempts to use it was sheer frustration.

A recent convert to C1 and still learning it after for ever in LR since its inception but the difference is not just small it's pretty huge, as can be seen at 10.14 where you compare the highlights, it's not just the highlights, look at the detail difference in the same file in the rocks and treetops, for someone ultra-critical like I am its a massive difference.
@lighthousephoto71432 жыл бұрын
The ability to work in sessions, rather than with a catalog is a huge benefit for me. I much prefer managing my photography files via Mac OS than via an application catalog. C1 cleverly sorts the raw capture files from export files, and trashed files. Easy to manage or share between computers.

So brilliant! I started out with Lr CC in 2018 when I got my a7III and added C1 about a year ago, I still have both and like both. For architecture and interior I often use Lr CC because of the automatic leveling tool, which is awesome. You have Keystones in C1, but I'm not really smart enough to use these. For my nature images and landscapes I use C1 90% of the time. I didn't try out Ps or the old Lr, but maybe I add Affinity by time? For storing I store all my images by date folders both in camera, in catalog and for export. Probably I keep both, because I want to follow the new Lr CC and see how it develops. And for interiors especially I really recommend Lr CC, because automatic leveling is like magic to me:-)

I'm new to Capture One (3 month user) . But try also to compare the tethered function. I guess Phase One optimized the software due to the big files they have to handle with their cameras (150Mb files). @davidgrandy46814 жыл бұрын
Turn the highlight warning on when you are trying to reduce the highlights. I suspect (know) that it will indicate that your highlights are blown out. I use C1 and love it, but the indicated highlight recovery isn't as good as Lightroom's. Now this might be how the C1 highlight warning is set. In earlier Lightroom's I'd have shots where the highlights were blown, and had to be. For example a bride standing with the groomsmen and her dress is blown out. Had I exposed for her dress the faces would have been underexposed (never mind the black tuxes), and I'm going to choose the facial exposure every time. I would just drag the highlight recovery slider in LR and it would go away. The same type shot in later versions of LR's would present with the bride's dress not being blown out. Now I don't think that my exposure got magically better, nor do I think that my old Canon 5D somehow picked up more dynamic range. What I think happened was that LR fixed this blown out highlight problem, right out of the box. It, metaphorically, pulled the highlight recovery slider before I could. Capture One has not gotten there yet.
@freetibet10004 жыл бұрын
Didn’t Todd just proved the opposite in this video? I admit, his example was a mountain top instead of a brides dress. Go figure? When it comes to highlight warnings in Capture One you’re able to set the warning to start at any value you want, both for the blacks and the whites.

Biggies: Color is better in C1than Lightroom. And, tethered shooting is better in C1. Also, Capture One (C1) can be purchased with no monthly rental while Lr, is rental only. So, C1 is less expensive. Personally I like C1 a lot better. I still need Photoshop because C1 doesn't do HDR or panoramas yet. Nor does it do composites. Hopefully those three are coming. l C1 has a 30-day free trial. C1 is expensive, but worth it.

Hi Todd, thanks' for a nice comparison btw. LR and C1. But as they say - a pictures says more than 1K of words ;-) Meaning that a lot of the features you mention as being superior to C1, you should give some examples instead of just a lot of words. It's not as convincing as actually showing some examples ... But nice review and nice presentation and you definitely made me curios on more time to have a second look into C1 ...

The highlight recovery in Lightroom used to be really good too, but around v5 or so they changed how they are doing it and broke it.

Switched to Capture One a year ago or more... I have lost like 3 new versions of Lightroom and I don't care (I used it since it was just Camera Raw plugin).

Does Capture One migrate my Lightroom catalogues?

Yes, and I know they’ve been improving it to try and migrate Develop settings as well (or at least as much as they can because it’s not quite 1-1). Haven’t used it personally.
