Near where I live, a psychologically troubled man in his late 20s went to the emergency room at a local hospital seeking help. They turned him away as he had committed no crime. He went home and killed both his parents. Now he is in a state hospital for the criminally insane. Our system failed him and his parents. As long as it is okay to make a business of healthcare, this problem will not be resolved.

@@davidmann4533 But it actually is an existing problem, the lack of prevention and waiting for the worst to happen. And it's not only these cases, but also domestic violence or child abuse. If USA can ban Kinder Surprise Eggs from being imported to save people from choking, why is there no help available when a person suggests they are probably going to kill somebody due to their lack of control? What other options these people have, then, if even them cannot be responsible because of their mental health issues? (In our country there is an option for people with existing mental health diagnosis to be hospitalized when they are afraid they may hurt themselves or somebody else, I think it's for a week or so to have a better evaluation of their current conditions and to start a proper treatment, if possible.)

Even here in Australia with free healthcare, it is very difficult to get psychiatric help. You almost literally have to kill someone or brandish a weapon in public and have the police take you to hospital. Turn up to the ER and they'll give you a Valium and send you home. It is the poor relative of the health system. Under-funded and under-resourced. Very sad.

Thank you for this very interesting video. I view the relationship between parents and their children and vice versa as unconditional love but the world has taught me that not everyone thinks that way. In the case of Ari, I believe he was mentally insane and therefore should of gone to a mental institution but at the same time, the murder of his mother was committed for Ari’s own gains… he seems to have planned the murder, there is an element of cunningness regarding Ari’s murderous intentions.

Sometimes we see people with mental illnesses in this well organized set of characteristics, however they also have their own personality traits that makes them unique. Sometimes those are benevolent traits and other times deeply malevolent. Thank you for the review, Dr. Grande.❤

Hi Dr. Grande. So sad that this case couldn't be avoided altogether. Skitzophrenia is an illness that often goes unrecognized. My father, daughter, & many people throughout my life were bipolar & skitzophrenic/skitzoeffective. At one time in my youth my psychiatrist said that I was paranoid but I would overcome the problems stemming from it if I stopped using recreational drugs & alcohol. Thankfully I did that & started back in my late 30s but have completely stopped altogether. I only use prescription meds when needed. RIP to his Mom & all the dedicated parents out there who love their children enough to not neglect their care. Love & spectacular times hopefully await you, peace, JANINE Smiley😀🙂😉😍🤩✌♏💜🎵🎶🌹🌺🌻🌼🌷👍🙏😇

I wonder if "malevolent" is the right word, to me it seems more like social or anti-social traits, as I think the people involved believe they're either persecuted or in some way doing the right thing, which is not malevolence, it's just misguided and anti-social and likewise "benevolent" in this context I think really means a delusion that happens to be socially acceptable or something like that. Obviously this is semantics, but true malevolence is something different and more, well, malevolent.

I have a son with schizophrenia. I know that everyone knows that our mental health system is broken, but I don't think people truly have any idea. My son is cognitively impaired and autistic along with paranoid schizophrenia. He had been in and out of the hospital and his care team recommended residential treatment. He believed a few of his classmates were working with the government and poisoning him - and asked my husband to order acid for him so he could throw it in their faces so "everyone could recognize the evil ones." (Obviously we didn't buy any and we took preventative measures - and alerted the school.) Despite this (and his sisters ages 3, 6 and 16 having PTSD from his behavior) the county board who never even met him denied approval for residential care. It wasn't a financial reason as we had private insurance that approved treatment. It wasn't until months went by and he spent a month hospitalized that it was finally approved - but by then his support needs were so great it was nearly impossible to find a center willing to accept him. (And this took over 35 people helping our family.) It's been 6 years of fighting and he's never allowed to remain anywhere long enough to make progress. He has a genetic condition that causes issues with his vascular system and heart and he responds poorly to meds. I don't think anything is going to change.

My son was very emotionally disturbed with PTSD (abusive father) from the ages of 6 until around 11, and it literally sucked the life out of me. Multiple hospitalizations, therapy, dealing with rage episodes, constant problems at school, in addition to fighting his abusive father who sued me for custody, despite him being convicted of assault/domestic violence against me. I lost 2 jobs because I had to miss so much work. He is much better now, dad has been absent for 3 years, best thing to ever happen. I have nothing left in me as a parent. He's a teen so he doesn't require as much interaction from me, but I'm no longer the fun, involved parent I used to be when his older sister and him were young. I don't like being a parent, the bad almost completely overshadows the good during those years. I love him, and he's a great kid now, and he loves the crap out of his momma and knows how hard I fought for him. He doesn't know the toll it took on me, that changed me forever, and not for the better. Caring for a mentally unwell child is the most exhausting thing a person could ever have to do

@@jennh2096 I wish I could reach through the screen and give you a hug! I’m so sorry for all you and your kids have been through. My life is very similar, except I am physically disabled and have 15 doctors after multiple organ failure. I am a single mom to a 12 and 15 year old and my ex-husband, who left for a “funner life,” makes our lives hell all the time. He lives 1500 miles away, but he still effects our lives. I had some autonomic nervous system testing done as I have something called POTS. My doctor said my ANS testing shows my nervous system is in a hopeless state. He described it as though a gazelle in a lion’s mouth before it has been devoured, yet it has resolved itself to death. I’m struggling to find peace in that as it’s like my body is even done. My kids are great, but they too are effected mentally by all we’ve been through. Trying to help them through and to give them all the love and attention and devotion I can give before I’m just absolutely incapable of going on. I pray all the time for 6 more years to get my kids grown so they won’t be resolved to the horrible situation that is their dad. I too know I will never be the same, but I pray that God will help me to find the strength, willpower, and the ability to heal and have a renewed spirit. Blessings to you and may you too be renewed.

My son is mildly autistic and it was a constant struggle to just get him through high school. He is still exhausting because I’m still trying to get him to launch. My daughter has sexual trauma from her past and it’s been draining to get her to therapy and psychiatry. It’s one thing after another and she is emotionally volatile. Their dad is not helpful and I have been in this alone, despite being married to their dad. I am so drained and hopeless. I think I am changed forever and I am not the mom I want to be. Hats off to you Mom. My Mom didn't have to deal with us being so out of control and quite frankly I don't know how. Father was abusive in every single form to her and us 8 kids. Two of us turned to the streets... drugs, drinking. But for whatever reason as siblings we never turned on each other or her. Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Mood swings...oh yeah...we each had them but I think we all internalized it. As kids we craved each other's company. And we adored our Mom and always sought to comfort her or find something to ease her burdens. I'm grateful we had the presence of mind and enough control not to attack her. For your strength and perseverance..to all mothers who do their best against the odds, especially dealing with troubled kids..I salute & thank you.

A child like this, can effectively be the end of a parent's life as far as a social life, or a work life, it never ends. They dont grow up and get better, they are this way for ever. Mental health issues are not taken seriously enough, and high quality treatment is inaccessible to many people in the US. I don't know what his psychiatric hospital experiences were like, obviously, so I couldn't say if they were negligent or if he was unresponsive to their treatment options. It's important to remember though that most mentally ill people aren't violent.

that kid should have been in psychiatric care early on, but many times it's hard for parents to move forward in it because they do not want to admit their kid has serious issues, it's even worse when they make excuses for them (I'd know, it was like that with my siblings, and they got progressively worse. Now it seems there is no hope for them. Surprisingly they have not overdosed yet)
@drdr76
@drdr76 Жыл бұрын
When parents make excuses for their kid's failures it enables the kids to fail more. My brother has epilepsy. My mother and aunt made excuses for him their whole lives, bought him a car, let him live at home almost his entire adult life. I would often tell my mom that she was doing him no favors treating him like this because my sister and I could not support him. After she passed, he ended up homeless for 5 years before finally getting social security after 3 court case appeals. The longest he was ever employed was 6 years selling cars (and living at home). He never helped my parents with rent, utilities, food, nothing, even when he was making money and this WAS a source of arguments between my dad, who wanted to throw him out, and my mother.

He had been in patient several times. I guess he may have been at least partially right: the psychiatric hospitals DIDN'T seem to help him significantly. Or perhaps he was inconsistent with therapy and medication? The mental health community leaves a lot to be desired, and fails so many people. The US healthcare system in general is pretty shit, if it's even accessible to you, let alone high quality mental health services.

Contrast to the case of Jarrod Murray, who literally killed a classmate because he felt like it, and treated his interrogation more like a debriefing. He knew society considered his actions wrong and openly stated that he deserved the death penalty, but showed no remorse for his actions, indicating a personal lack of understanding of _why_ society considers murder wrong. It was his complete inherent lack of self-preservation that ultimately saw him committed instead of jailed.

I don't think that is a personal lack of understanding. He honoured his detachment from it. At some point in life, if not from the start as for some, I think grief becomes anger and then disinterest, and the intelligent, especially those with a flicker of decency, mature and realize they have a choice. It can be a discipline. But for some; the disinterest is also, in a way, suicidal. They have checked out of caring for self preservation as much as having no value for the life of others because they are locked in an existential crisis of isolation and life feeling meaningless and pointless, not only for them, but for everyone. It's just facts to them to live or die tomorrow or a hundred years from now, it feels the same, not only for them but for everyone. There is no boundary between existences. If you have no self, no one else does either. It's all one. We all need a separate, honoured self, and to be and to have a sense of honour for the self and boundaries of others. The guy above looks and sounds intelligent, even as he was messed up. Parents need to have a self but you can never choose your own life and wanting to move on over the wellbeing of your children. It's just not right. However, we do not, as a society, provide enough support for each other, especially in such now difficult circumstances which were likely created in the man above's first five years, where the intervention really needed to occur, and we all pay a price. This fellow is narcissistic and psychopathic, regardless of other mental health issues. Sad. His self-centered, self-preservation kicked in when his mother was going to move on, perhaps trying to force him to independence. He is dependent. No one stays in a circumstance like this if they truly feel capable of independence. I had a friend who was schizophrenic and a very gentle, responsible, intelligent and caring person. He couldn't get anyone to hire him. His parents lived for themselves, but his mother gave him a portion of her time and they provided financially. He put himself in hospital when necessary, as much as he hated it.

I think he felt like his soon to be stepfather was replacing him. Having mild autism (like I do) makes you feel so flawed as well as a failure and once you’re an adult and living on your own it’s going to be a very rough time as most women are not going be attracted to autistic men (I’m 35 and never been loved in that way). Loneliness is mentally draining as well and schizophrenia… I can’t imagine having that on top of being autistic. I would have taken my own life for sure. Rest easy to the mother and the son does belong in prison for sure.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Just wanted to mention I'm a woman who did love an autistic man, and he cared about me a lot, but didn't feel the exact same way. He'd never been in love with anyone and wasn't sure he was even capable of getting that close to someone, or if his mind could experience those feelings. But my point being, you are absolutely loveable, it's just a matter of finding the person for you. This is very difficult even when you're completely neurotypical, so I understand the additional challenges neuroatypicality presents.

When your strategy to escape the consequences of your criminal behavior is to tell the police you're insane and you can't tell right from wrong, it tells me you must be able to tell right from wrong, otherwise you wouldn't have said it. Using the distracting argument that, "It doesn't mean he is not mentally ill" is a bit of a strawman, since you can be mentally ill, but still know the difference between right and wrong. Observe: "He came up with a homicidal plan in order to get revenge," and, "Ari was worried about getting caught, but he wasn't too worried because he thought his mental illness would shield him from prosecution." Clearly, he understood he had done something criminal.

I'm sure there's more to the history between him and his mother. If she was bipolar and he was a mentally challenged child with behavior problems, it's probable that there was domestic violence and dysfunction. Single mothers are very good at downplaying and hiding how abusive they are. And being the only male in the home wouldn't have been good for his development either. Something to always bear in mind is that cluster-B personality disorders are usually the result and exacerbated by trauma (even schizophrenia), even if the sufferer won't admit it or is unaware that how they were treated is abnormal.

I am not convinced that Beverly loved her son as much as Dr. Grande says she did. She may have been trying to but just as many people, she didn't-understand his autism spectrum disorder and tended to react in the wrong way. Then, just as she was starting to get through to him, she would give up in frustration. Family counseling would surely have helped, but of course, these services are not always available everywhere. Social welfare counselors are also known for their frequently incompetent handling of complex issues and/or cases such as this one.
