In the plot, if the insured person dies in an accident, the policy pays double. The novel was based an a true event, and I’ve also read about a few recent cases. In the novel and in real life, all the perpetrators got caught. When I hear of yet another case, I say to myself that the perpetrator never saw the movie Double Indemnity!

I found it interesting that he was diagnosed with conversion disorder. I was diagnosed with it at one time due to stress causing episodes of partial blindness and the inability to talk due to stress. My mom's neuropsychologist said it's a very uncommon disorder.

She was wanting to get divorced but not allow him to be financially free from her. She still wanted the benefit of being married to him without any of the responsibility. Alimony shouldn’t exist anymore. I can see how it had a purpose if the wife stayed at home and the husband’s earnings went into his bank account and they divorced when they were already older and she had planned her life assuming they would stay together. This case is nothing like that scenario

It's never a good idea to marry a man only three weeks after meeting him, and this man was obviously mentally disturbed, though I'm not sure whether it was PTSD because it's not stated whether he actually went into combat at any time. The death of his second wife in the vehicular accident definitely sounds staged, but at least the first wife had the presence of mind to get out before it was too late.

The track record of a person, company, or product is the reputation they have, based on what they have done or how good they have been in the past. Marriage #1 ended in the no-fault divorce of the lucky surviving first wife from her husband, Todd Winkler, a USAF fighter pilot with mental health issues. Marriage #2 ended in the death of the second wife under mysterious circumstances. He and his second wife were by themselves in the middle of the forest. He was supposedly bitten by a bug, had an allergic reaction, went into anaphylactic shock, and sent her as the driver with him in either the passenger seat of the cab or in the pickup truck bed in a mad dash to get to the nearest hospital driving down the mountain causing a crash as it rolled off the road and burst into flames ejecting them both from the vehicle. Yet, he survived without apparent injury. After Todd Winkler received $1.2M in life insurance from the death of his second whose remains he had cremated but not subsequently interred, Marriage #3 ended in the death of the third wife with whom he bore three children. She was unfaithful to him. Yet, she wanted a divorce and to receive physical and legal custody of the kids plus child support and alimony. Strangely, after she got a degree in finance and then met and married him for his money, even though he was too cheap and creep to bury urn with the remains of his second wife, wife number three later told her friends that all he cared about was money. She did not put (-2) + 2 = 0 together in a zero sum game. Moral: If you marry for money or are able to attract more desirable mates on the basis of being able to make money, do not expect your marriage(s) to last. In other words, follow the money trail.
